Build the workflow as Schedule Trigger → HTTP Request → optional formatting or aggregation → Gmail. The Schedule Trigger starts it, an HTTP Request node asks a screenshot service for each capture and stores the response as a file, and Gmail sends an HTML message with the screenshot attached. You need an external renderer and its API details; n8n schedules and moves the data but does not render the pages itself.
What you need before building the workflow
- An n8n workflow that can use the Schedule Trigger, HTTP Request, and Gmail nodes.
- A screenshot renderer with an endpoint and authentication method you can configure in HTTP Request. Check whether it returns image bytes directly or a URL or JSON response; the steps below assume it returns image bytes.
- The target sites must be reachable by the renderer. Access rules vary by provider, so confirm them in that provider’s documentation.
- Credentials for the renderer and a connected Gmail account.
n8n’s HTTP Request node supports REST calls, authentication, query parameters, headers, request bodies, and a File response mode. Configure the endpoint and credentials using your renderer’s instructions: n8n HTTP Request node documentation.
1. Schedule the digest
- Add a Schedule Trigger node and choose a daily, weekly, or custom interval.
- Set the workflow timezone if the schedule should follow a particular local time. If no workflow timezone is set, n8n uses the instance timezone.
- For a custom cron schedule, enter the expression in the trigger. For example,
0 12 * * 1means noon every Monday, and0 9 * * 1-5means 9:00 a.m. on weekdays. The Schedule Trigger documentation also allows an optional sixth field for seconds. - Save and publish the workflow. A saved but unpublished workflow will not run on its schedule.
If a monthly schedule specifies a day that a month does not contain, the trigger will not run on a nonexistent date. Do not assume missed runs are automatically replayed: n8n documents missed-execution options for nodes added from version 2.36 onward, and those options require the durable scheduler. The default in-memory scheduler does not run missed executions. See the Schedule Trigger documentation.

Configure the HTTP Request node
- Connect an HTTP Request node to the Schedule Trigger.
- Set the method, URL, authentication, query parameters, headers, or body to match the screenshot provider’s current API documentation.
- Set the response format to File and choose an output field name, such as
screenshot. This stores returned bytes in binary data for later attachment. - Run the node once and inspect its execution output. Confirm the response is an image file and note the actual binary field name before configuring Gmail.
For multiple sites, provide a list of URLs and make sure the workflow processes each URL as an item before composing the message. The exact item structure, looping, and binary-field expressions depend on how your workflow is built and what the renderer returns. Inspect execution data rather than assuming a field name.

Provider-specific example: Cofferdock
Cofferdock’s screenshot API instructions describe a POST request to its screenshot endpoint, an API key in the x-api-key header, a public site URL in the request, and File as the HTTP Request response format. The instructions describe PNG or JPEG output and limit captures to public HTTP/HTTPS sites reachable from the internet. These settings apply to Cofferdock only; do not reuse its endpoint or header with another provider. Check the chosen provider’s current docs for endpoint, authentication, output format, viewport and full-page options, and limits: Cofferdock screenshot API documentation.
3. Send the digest with Gmail
- Add a Gmail node after the capture or aggregation steps and select Send Message.
- Set the email type to HTML if you want headings, links, or other formatted digest content.
- In the attachment option, enter the name of the incoming binary field containing the screenshot, such as
screenshot. Use the field name confirmed in execution data. - For a digest containing several captures, construct the message and attachment mapping to match the items and binary fields produced by your workflow, then test with a small set of URLs.
The Gmail node documentation supports HTML email and attachments mapped from an incoming binary field: Gmail node documentation. Attaching the image is the supported, predictable approach described here. A remote image URL in the email body is not guaranteed to display in every recipient’s email client. Inline embedding requires correct MIME and content-ID handling, and client behavior should be tested if you choose that route.

Choosing a screenshot renderer
The renderer is a separate service from n8n. Confirm that the target URL is accessible to it, what authentication it needs, whether its response contains image bytes or a URL or JSON, and whether n8n can store the result as a file. Check pricing, quotas, privacy, retention, speed, and reliability with each provider; they vary and are not established by the node documentation.

Troubleshooting the workflow
- The schedule does not run: Confirm that the workflow is saved and published. Check the workflow timezone and the instance timezone fallback; verify the cron expression and whether the selected date exists in that month.
- The screenshot request fails: Check the renderer’s exact endpoint, authentication method, required parameters, and whether the target is publicly reachable. A private or intranet-only page may not be accessible to a hosted renderer.
- Gmail sends without an attachment: Inspect the HTTP Request output to verify that it returned a file, then match Gmail’s attachment field to the actual binary property name. A response containing JSON or a remote URL is not the same as image bytes.
- The email contains the wrong screenshot or only one of several: Inspect each item after capture and aggregation. Confirm that each URL remains associated with the corresponding binary data and that the Gmail node receives the intended items.
- A scheduled run was missed: Do not expect the default in-memory scheduler to replay it. The documented missed-execution options require the durable scheduler and apply to Schedule Trigger nodes added from n8n 2.36.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can n8n take website screenshots by itself?
No. In this workflow, a separate screenshot renderer captures the page; n8n calls it through HTTP Request and handles the resulting data.
Can the digest include several websites?
Yes. Process a URL list through the renderer and configure the message and attachments around the resulting n8n items and binary fields.

Will recipients always see a screenshot placed in the email body by URL?
No. Email-client display behavior is not guaranteed. The documented Gmail attachment route is the more predictable option.
