You generally should not send an AWS Elemental MediaPackage playback endpoint to YouTube Live. MediaPackage is documented as receiving an upstream live stream and serving packaged output to downstream players or a CDN; YouTube Live is configured to receive an encoder feed at the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. For a playlist source, use FFmpeg as the encoder and send its output to YouTube’s configured ingest destination. Use MediaPackage separately if your architecture also needs its downstream packaging and delivery role.

Why a MediaPackage endpoint is not the YouTube destination

MediaPackage has distinct ingest and playback sides. An upstream encoder sends a live stream into a MediaPackage channel; a downstream player or CDN requests packaged content from a MediaPackage endpoint. The AWS Elemental MediaPackage User Guide describes the endpoint output URL as the address through which a downstream device requests content.

YouTube’s encoder workflow works in the opposite role: the encoder sends a feed to the server URL and stream key configured for the YouTube Live stream. The documented workflows do not establish a MediaPackage endpoint as a push destination or a direct MediaPackage-to-YouTube relay. Do not paste a MediaPackage playback URL into YouTube’s encoder destination field and expect it to forward a stream.

Send an FFmpeg playlist directly to YouTube Live

The practical path for a playlist-based source is FFmpeg as the encoder and YouTube as the ingest destination. The exact FFmpeg playlist command depends on your files, playlist format, and FFmpeg build; the documented destination requirements do not establish one tested command that works for every combination. Configure and test the playlist input and encoder output for your own files rather than assuming a particular demuxer option or command line.

ZowieBox, 4K HDMI NDI Video Encoder/Decoder, HDMI NDI
  • Compact but Powerful Design: ZowieBox is smaller than a phone, featuring a tally light and LCD screen for streaming status. Capture console gameplay in up to 4K with zero-lag HDMI passthrough, while the built-in video encoder converts video for IP streaming. The IP stream can also be decoded back to a 4K HDMI signal.
  • Standalone Game Streaming: Just plug and play—ZowieBox enables PC-free live gaming without affecting gameplay. As an RTMP hardware encoder and HDMI streamer, it delivers stable streaming directly from your source, making it ideal for gaming, live events, and professional broadcasting.
  • NDI|HX3 Converter Technology: ZowieBox converts HDMI signals to NDI|HX3/HX2/HX, functioning as an NDI video encoder, or NDI Video Decoder for flexible IP workflows. Certified NDI technology enables low-latency gameplay streaming through OBS/vMix. Note: Encoder and decoder modes cannot run simultaneously; full NDI signals are not supported.
  • UVC to HDMI Conversion: Supporting up to 4K@30fps and 1080p@60fps decoding, ZowieBox enables flexible conversion for webcam and video workflows. As a video decoder and HDMI to IP converter, it expands connectivity options for professional video devices. Note: USB capture card functionality is not currently supported.
  • All-around Configuration Options: Control ZowieBox through its web UI on a PC, phone, or tablet. Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
  1. Create or select the YouTube stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream you intend to use. Copy the current server URL and the corresponding stream key from that stream’s encoder settings.
  2. Choose the protocol supported by your stream and encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS for the standard RTMP encoder path. Use the current destination shown in Live Control Room, not a URL copied from another event. If you select HLS in Live Control Room, use YouTube’s HLS ingest destination and follow its HLS-specific output requirements instead.
  3. Configure FFmpeg’s playlist input and output. Point FFmpeg at your playlist source and configure its output for the selected YouTube ingest protocol. Keep the server URL and stream key private: do not put real credentials in public examples or expose them in logs.
  4. Start the encoder and check the preview. For a scheduled stream, YouTube says to wait for the encoder preview, then select Go live. Before the event, test that both audio and moving video are present and monitor YouTube’s stream health.

Choose between RTMPS and HLS ingest

These are YouTube ingest choices; neither turns a MediaPackage playback endpoint into an encoder destination.

Choice When it may fit Requirements and tradeoff
RTMP or RTMPS A standard encoder workflow that supports the protocol configured for the YouTube stream. Enter YouTube’s current server URL and stream key in the encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS. YouTube describes HLS as having higher latency than RTMP.
HLS Potentially useful for HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP, subject to YouTube’s HLS support and the selected stream configuration. Use the YouTube HLS URL. YouTube’s published requirements call for MPEG-TS segments from 1 to 4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST or PUT, no byte ranges, and no encryption other than HTTPS. HLS has higher latency because it sends segments rather than a continuous RTMP stream.

If MediaPackage must also be part of the architecture

Keep the two destinations separate. Configure an upstream encoder to send a live feed to MediaPackage, then use MediaPackage’s endpoint for downstream playback or CDN delivery. If the same program must also reach YouTube, plan a distinct encoder output or feed to YouTube’s configured ingest destination. That is an architectural approach based on the services’ documented ingest and egress roles, not a vendor-verified MediaPackage-to-YouTube relay.

Built-in OSD generator adds scrolling text, logos, or timestamps directly to the video stream — ideal for branding, event info, or security labeling. Backed by a 1-year warranty and 24/7 online technical support.
  • Keep the MediaPackage channel ingest URL distinct from the MediaPackage origin or endpoint playback URL.
  • Keep YouTube’s server URL and stream key tied to the specific Live Control Room stream.
  • Confirm the exact console or API steps against the MediaPackage version and AWS region and account you use. AWS documents both its original MediaPackage guide and MediaPackage v2; their broad ingest-to-downstream-output roles are consistent.

Common setup failures and what to check

  • YouTube receives no feed: Verify that FFmpeg is sending to the current YouTube server URL and matching stream key, rather than to a MediaPackage playback endpoint or a stale destination.
  • The stream is configured for HLS but the output is not accepted: Check the YouTube HLS requirements: TS segments of 1–4 seconds, no more than five outstanding segments in the rolling playlist, HTTPS POST/PUT, no byte ranges, and no encryption beyond HTTPS.
  • YouTube shows a preview but the scheduled event is not live: Wait for the encoder preview and select Go live in Live Control Room.
  • Playback is delayed more than expected: HLS is segment-based and YouTube says it has higher latency than RTMP. Select the ingest protocol appropriate to the stream and latency needs.
  • The stream has video but no audible sound, or no moving picture: Test audio and moving video before the event, then inspect YouTube’s stream health and the FFmpeg input/output configuration.
  • The stream key has been exposed: Treat it as a credential. Avoid publishing it in command examples, logs, or screenshots; use the current key associated with the intended Live Control Room stream.

Copyright and playlist readiness

Before streaming a playlist, make sure you have the rights needed for the video and audio you send to YouTube. A successful encoder connection does not establish that the content is authorized. Test the full playlist—including transitions and audio—with a private or otherwise appropriate test stream before the live event.
