You generally cannot send an FFmpeg playlist to MediaPackage and then give YouTube a MediaPackage origin URL as though it were YouTube’s encoder destination. MediaPackage accepts an upstream live input and exposes a separate packaged output for downstream playback; YouTube’s encoder workflow expects the encoder to send to the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. For a setup that uses both services, send a MediaPackage-compatible input to AWS and configure a separate output to YouTube. If you only need YouTube, send the FFmpeg output directly to YouTube instead.
Choose the right architecture first
There are three different addresses to distinguish: the MediaPackage ingest address, the MediaPackage origin endpoint, and YouTube’s encoder ingest address. They are not interchangeable.
- MediaPackage ingest: FFmpeg or another upstream encoder sends a supported live input to the channel’s ingest destination.
- MediaPackage origin endpoint: downstream players or a CDN fetch packaged content from this endpoint. It is not the YouTube encoder URL.
- YouTube ingest: the encoder sends to the server URL and stream key displayed in Live Control Room.
A practical dual-destination design therefore has two delivery paths from the playlist source: one into the configured MediaPackage channel, and another to YouTube’s encoder destination. The service documentation describes those separate roles and ingest directions; it does not establish that every possible MediaPackage-to-YouTube arrangement is impossible, but it does not make an origin URL a generic YouTube ingest address either.

If you need both MediaPackage and YouTube
Use separate outputs and validate each against its own requirements. Do not assume that one HLS playlist URL can be pasted into both services, or that YouTube can pull from the MediaPackage origin endpoint. The correct MediaPackage ingest protocol and authorization depend on the channel generation and input type you actually created.
Identify the MediaPackage generation and region
Before building an FFmpeg output, inspect the actual AWS resource. MediaPackage v1 and v2 have materially different ingest methods and authentication, so a command intended for one is not a safe template for the other.
| Choice | Documented detail | What to verify before configuring FFmpeg |
|---|---|---|
| MediaPackage v1 | HLS input uses HTTPS over WebDAV with digest authentication. | Confirm that the resource is v1; use the channel-provided ingest details and credentials; verify the expected container, codecs, audio/video layout, and encryption status. |
| MediaPackage v2 | HLS and CMAF can be pushed over HTTPS. The documented live ingest flow uses AWS Signature Version 4 authorization; a channel policy is needed when the source is outside the AWS account. | Confirm the input type, channel policy, authorization method, channel-specific destination, and whether the resource exposes a redundant pair of ingest domains. |
AWS lists MediaPackage v1 live API endpoints in Mumbai (ap-south-1), and v2 live API endpoints in Mumbai (ap-south-1) and Hyderabad (ap-south-2). These are service API endpoints, not the channel-specific media ingest destinations. Obtain the ingest details from the MediaPackage resource you created; do not substitute an AWS API hostname.
For v2, AWS describes two ingest domains as an option for redundancy and failover. Use both only when the actual channel configuration provides them and your sender is set up to use them. Region availability alone does not tell you whether a particular VPS provider has a stable, high-capacity route to that region.

Prepare the playlist and VPS
Confirm what “playlist” means in your setup
Check whether FFmpeg is reading a local list of media files, a single pre-recorded file, or an existing HLS playlist. Those are different inputs and should not be treated as equivalent. Verify that the source can be read continuously for the intended stream duration and that the produced audio/video layout and codecs meet the selected MediaPackage input requirements.
For MediaPackage v1, the documented input must include video, must not encrypt media segments, and can contain muxed or unmuxed audio and video. AWS lists H.264 or H.265 video and AAC, Dolby Digital, or Dolby Digital Plus audio among its supported source codecs, subject to the supported containers. For v2, match the channel’s selected HLS or CMAF input type and its supported codecs and output configuration; a file ending in .m3u8 is not by itself proof that its segments and requests qualify.
Measure the route from the VPS
From the specific Indian VPS you plan to use, measure sustained throughput, packet loss, and connection stability to the actual MediaPackage ingest hostname. Repeat under conditions representative of the planned stream. Provision upload headroom above the encoded bitrate rather than sizing the VPS connection exactly to the average media rate. These checks are operational precautions, not a published performance guarantee for any Indian VPS provider or route.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Check that the VPS can reach the configured ingest hostname over the required HTTPS path.
- Confirm that the provider’s egress limits and traffic policy permit the intended continuous upload.
- Keep AWS credentials, channel credentials, and YouTube stream keys out of public scripts, logs, screenshots, and shared shell history.
Configure the MediaPackage output without guessing
- Open the selected MediaPackage resource in AWS. Record its generation, region, input type, channel-specific ingest details, and any required credentials or channel policy.
- Match the FFmpeg packaging to the resource. For v1, account for HTTPS WebDAV and digest authentication. For v2, account for the selected HLS or CMAF input and its required HTTPS authorization, including Signature Version 4 where configured.
- Check the actual media output. Verify segment format, encryption, video presence, codecs, container, and muxing against that resource’s input requirements. Do not assume that a generic HLS output meets either generation’s requirements.
- Send a short test input. Confirm that the channel accepts the ingest and that its configured endpoint produces playable output for a downstream test player.
- Test recovery and continuity. Monitor the sender and MediaPackage output during a representative run before relying on the setup for a live event.
There is no single safe FFmpeg command for an arbitrary VPS-to-MediaPackage channel. The exact destination and authentication depend on the AWS resource, and the documented v1 and v2 methods differ. Use the channel-specific values and the matching AWS procedure; do not copy an endpoint or secret into a published command, and do not treat a placeholder command as a working ingest configuration.

Configure a separate YouTube destination
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the intended live event.
- Copy the encoder server URL and stream key displayed for that event into the FFmpeg output configuration. Keep the key private; it grants access to the stream destination.
- Use RTMPS for the general encoder workflow where supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS for its general encoder path. Its documented RTMP/RTMPS guidance supports H.264, HEVC, and AV1 video, up to 60 fps.
- Set the encoder to constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Choose a bitrate from YouTube’s recommendation for the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec. There is no one bitrate appropriate to every stream. Check the applicable YouTube table rather than applying a single figure across settings.
- Test with representative motion and audio. Start the encoder, check YouTube’s stream health, and confirm that the event receives clean picture and sound before the intended broadcast.
If the same playlist must feed both destinations, configure a distinct MediaPackage output and a distinct YouTube output. Do not point the YouTube output at the MediaPackage origin endpoint. Validate each path independently; a successful ingest at one service does not prove that the other accepts its protocol, authorization, or media format.
When YouTube HLS ingest is needed
YouTube HLS ingest is a separate choice from its general RTMP/RTMPS encoder workflow. Use it only when your encoder and codec requirements call for HLS and can meet YouTube’s specific HLS rules.
- Use MPEG-TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds.
- Maintain a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments.
- Send segments using HTTPS POST or PUT.
- Do not use byte-range segments.
- Do not encrypt segments; HTTPS transport is supported.
YouTube Help notes: “HLS has higher latency because it sends segments of video, instead of a continuous stream like RTMP.” That difference matters for interactive or time-sensitive broadcasts. Follow the HLS requirements for YouTube’s ingest separately from the HLS or CMAF requirements of a MediaPackage channel.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCopyright, reused content, and stream readiness
Technical acceptance by FFmpeg, MediaPackage, or YouTube does not establish that you have the rights to stream the playlist or that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization policies. Before going live, confirm permission for the video and audio you use, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and reused-content requirements. A playlist that loops successfully can still create policy or rights problems if its content is not authorized or does not satisfy the relevant rules.

Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or fix |
|---|---|---|
| MediaPackage rejects the sender | Wrong resource generation, destination, protocol, authentication, or channel policy. | Recheck the actual channel’s ingest details. Do not use an API hostname in place of the channel ingest destination, and do not apply v1 digest-auth assumptions to v2 or vice versa. |
| Authentication fails although the hostname resolves | Credentials or authorization method do not match the configured resource. | For v1, verify the channel-provided WebDAV digest credentials. For v2, verify the channel policy and Signature Version 4 setup required by that channel. Keep secret values out of logs while diagnosing. |
| MediaPackage accepts input but downstream playback fails | The source may not match the configured input type, codecs, container, segment encryption, or audio/video layout. | Inspect the generated media and compare it with the requirements for that exact v1 or v2 input. Check the configured endpoint and test its output with a downstream player. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | The encoder may be using the wrong event key, server URL, or protocol. | Copy the current server URL and stream key from the intended Live Control Room event, then check YouTube stream health while sending a test. |
| YouTube reports poor stream health | Bitrate, keyframe interval, encoding mode, source stability, or VPS upload capacity may be unsuitable. | Use CBR, set a two-second keyframe interval (never above four seconds), choose the bitrate for the exact codec and video settings, and measure sustained VPS throughput and packet loss. |
| YouTube HLS input is rejected or delayed | Segments or playlist behavior may violate HLS ingest rules; HLS also has higher latency than continuous RTMP. | Check for 1–4 second TS segments, a rolling window of at most five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, no byte ranges, and no segment encryption. |
| The stream drops when the VPS route degrades | Regional service availability does not guarantee stable connectivity from the chosen provider. | Measure the actual VPS-to-ingest route over time, retain upload headroom, and test the configured redundant MediaPackage ingest domains if the v2 channel provides them. |
Costs and operational trade-offs
A dual-destination design means operating the VPS encoder and the AWS MediaPackage resources you choose, as well as configuring YouTube separately. The AWS and VPS charges depend on the resources and provider you select; the source material does not establish a universal total. Estimate each service from your own configuration and expected use before committing to a continuous stream.
Running FFmpeg yourself gives you control over the source and output configuration, but the VPS, network route, process supervision, credentials, and recovery behavior remain your responsibility. A cloud service can be simpler when the goal is just to keep uploaded videos looping on YouTube rather than to use MediaPackage packaging.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your actual goal is a 24/7 YouTube loop from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is an alternative that avoids keeping an FFmpeg process and VPS running at home or on your own server. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. It streams to YouTube, not to other platforms, and does not go live from a camera.
