In Make, send an API request by adding the HTTP app’s Make a request module, then setting the endpoint URL, method, authentication, parameters, headers, and any required body according to the API’s documentation. Run the module and inspect its status and response before mapping its output into the rest of your scenario.

The exact fields depend on the API and the automation platform. This walkthrough uses Make for the main steps; n8n and Zapier express many of the same request parts through different controls.

What an API request contains

An API request is a message sent to a service endpoint. Most setups involve a URL, an HTTP method, optional headers and query parameters, and sometimes a request body. The server returns a status code and response data. The target API’s documentation—not a generic recipe—determines which values and formats are required.

Before configuring a module, open the documentation for the specific endpoint you need. Record its full URL, method, authentication scheme, required parameters and headers, body schema and content type, and expected response. Requirements can differ between endpoints in the same service.

Send a request in Make

1. Add the HTTP module

  1. In your Make scenario, add the HTTP app and choose Make a request.
  2. Enter the endpoint’s full HTTPS URL. Make documents that it rejects unverified self-signed certificates, so an endpoint using one may fail certificate verification.
  3. Use the API documentation’s endpoint URL as written. Do not substitute a URL from a different operation or copy a sample request without checking its endpoint requirements.

Make describes its HTTP app as useful for services that do not have a Make integration. The module’s controls cover the request components you need to configure and, where applicable, response parsing and pagination.

2. Select the method the endpoint requires

Make documents these methods. The endpoint specification remains authoritative about which one to use.

Method Typical purpose
GET Retrieve data.
POST Create or submit data.
PUT Replace a resource.
PATCH Partially update a resource.
DELETE Delete a resource.
HEAD Request status and headers without a response body.
OPTIONS Ask which operations or communication options are available.

These descriptions are common uses, not permission to choose a method by guesswork. For example, an API may use POST for an operation that does not create a resource.

3. Configure authentication

Choose the authentication option required by the service, such as API key, Basic Auth, or OAuth 2.0, and enter the credentials in the appropriate field. Select no authentication only when the endpoint is documented as public or otherwise does not require credentials.

Make advises placing authentication details in its dedicated Credentials field rather than passing secrets through headers or query parameters. Follow the target API’s instructions for where and how credentials are supplied; do not invent a credential location or duplicate credentials in generic fields.

4. Add query parameters and headers

Enter query parameters as key/value pairs in the query parameters area. They become part of the request URL. Add headers only when the API requires them, for example to identify the requested content format or provide a documented value. Use dedicated authentication or content-type controls where available rather than setting the same value twice.

Parameter names and capitalization should match the API documentation. A parameter that seems obvious—such as a record ID, page number, or filter—may have a service-specific name and format.

5. Add the body when required

Some methods and endpoints require a request body; others do not. Match both the body structure and its encoding to the endpoint specification. Make documents JSON, multipart/form-data, URL-encoded form data, and custom content types.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • JSON: Use a Make data structure when mapping values into JSON; it handles reserved-character escaping automatically. If you enter a raw JSON string, make sure it is valid JSON and that reserved characters are escaped.
  • Multipart/form-data: Choose this when the endpoint expects separate form fields or file data in a multipart request.
  • URL-encoded form data: Use it when the API expects form fields encoded in the request body.
  • Custom content type: Select this only when the endpoint specifies a different format, and provide a body in that format.

Do not send a body simply because the module offers a body field. Conversely, do not omit a required body or assume that JSON is appropriate for every POST or PUT request.

6. Parse and test the response

  1. Enable response parsing when you want Make to expose structured response fields for later modules.
  2. Run the module once. Make can use the result to make returned fields available for mapping.
  3. Inspect the status and returned content. If the request fails, compare the endpoint, method, credentials, parameter names, headers, and body with the endpoint documentation.
  4. Decide whether the scenario should stop when a request returns an error status. Make documents a setting to stop the scenario on HTTP 4xx or 5xx responses.

A successful module run is not the same as a successful business operation. Check the response body for API-level errors or warnings as well as the HTTP status.

Handle pagination when the endpoint returns a list

A response containing records may be only the first page. Check the API’s pagination instructions and configure the matching scheme rather than assuming one response contains the complete collection.

  • Offset and limit: Advance an offset while requesting the documented number of records.
  • Page number: Request successive page values.
  • Next-page URL or link: Follow the URL supplied by the service.
  • Cursor or token: Pass the returned cursor/token into the next request.

Make documents offset, page, URL/link, and cursor/token pagination. n8n also documents updating a parameter or following a next-page URL. The API’s own contract determines which method and termination condition apply.

Redirects, timeouts, and reliability

Redirects can affect state-changing requests. Make documents that some redirect status codes can change the method or discard a body, notably 303 and POST requests receiving 301 or 302. If a POST or other body-carrying request produces an unexpected result after a redirect, verify the destination and how the redirect is handled before repeating an operation that might create or alter data.

Make documents a timeout range of 1–300 seconds. Set a timeout suitable for the endpoint’s expected response, while respecting any limits or guidance in the service’s documentation. A longer timeout can allow a slow response more time to finish; it does not fix an incorrect URL, stalled service, or invalid request.

How Make, n8n, and Zapier differ

The request concepts are similar, but authentication, field names, import tools, and eligibility can vary. Make’s HTTP app is the main walkthrough here because the title’s “HTTP module” most directly matches its Make a request module.

Platform Configuration Notable distinction
Make HTTP app, Make a request: method, URL, authentication, headers, query parameters, content type/body, response parsing, and pagination. Documents a dedicated Credentials field, multiple body formats, and native pagination options.
n8n HTTP Request node: method, URL, query parameters, headers, body, authentication, and pagination. Can import a cURL example from an API guide into node fields; importing overwrites the existing node configuration.
Zapier API Request action in an app or API by Zapier. Zapier documentation describes connected-account authentication as automatic for its API Request action. API by Zapier documentation says a paid plan is required and lists Professional, Team, and Enterprise availability; confirm current eligibility because product availability can change.

n8n’s official FAQ describes the HTTP Request node as a way to query data from services with a REST API. n8n supports predefined credentials where available and generic credentials for other APIs. Zapier’s API by Zapier documentation describes sending a request to a URL with optional query parameters, headers, and a body.

Common errors and how to fix them

  • Authentication failure: Check the credential type and placement against the API guide. Confirm that the Make credential, n8n credential, or connected Zapier account is configured for the correct service and has the required access.
  • Bad request or validation error: Compare the method, required fields, parameter spelling, JSON schema, and content type with the endpoint example. In Make, a data structure helps with JSON escaping; raw JSON must be valid and escaped.
  • Response fields are missing in Make: Enable parsing and run the module once so Make can expose the output structure. Also inspect the raw response for an API-level error or a different response shape.
  • Only part of a collection arrives: Check the pagination contract and configure the documented page, offset, next URL, or cursor. Do not keep repeating the same request if its pagination value is not advancing.
  • Unexpected result after a redirect: Inspect the redirect destination and status behavior. Make notes that redirects can change the method or discard the body for some status codes.
  • Certificate verification failure: Make rejects unverified self-signed certificates. Use a properly verifiable HTTPS endpoint or resolve the certificate configuration at the service rather than treating the error as an authentication problem.

Or skip the browser setup

If your API request is for a website screenshot, you can call ScreenshotNeo directly instead of configuring a browser workflow. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. It also provides an MCP server for AI agents, with tools for screenshots, page information, and PDF capture.

The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Learn more at ScreenshotNeo or sign up free.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I call an API without writing code?

Use an automation platform’s HTTP module or node to configure the endpoint, method, credentials, parameters, headers, and body. The exact values must come from the API’s endpoint documentation.

How do I authenticate an API request?

Use the authentication method and credential location specified by the API, then configure the platform’s dedicated authentication controls or connected account where available. Do not put secrets in arbitrary fields.
