You can send a file directly from one browser to another with a WebRTC-based transfer service, without first uploading the file to cloud storage. A transfer over 100GB is possible in the right conditions, but it is not a guaranteed size limit: browser behavior, available storage, connection quality, and network configuration all matter.
How browser-to-browser file transfer works
The sender selects a file in a web app and shares an invitation link or code with the recipient. The service uses WebRTC to establish a peer connection, then sends the file through a data channel. The payload can go from the sender’s browser to the recipient’s browser without being uploaded to a cloud file host first. The WebTorrent project describes the WebRTC data channel model as allowing direct data transfer between browsers.
Direct transfer does not necessarily mean that no server is involved. Services may use servers for signaling, coordination, session metadata, or a TURN relay if the browsers cannot connect directly. FilePizza’s documentation describes signaling and optional TURN support. The file payload and the infrastructure used to establish or support a connection are separate parts of the process.

Also, FilePizza’s current v2 documentation says its direct transfer path uses WebRTC without WebTorrent. WebTorrent is useful background on browser peer transfer, but it should not be treated as the technology behind every service’s current implementation.

What you need for a 100GB+ transfer
- A suitable transfer service: Check its current documentation for supported browsers, transfer behavior, and how it handles large files. FilePizza and fsend document browser-based transfer, but their compatibility and features can change.
- Enough recipient storage: The recipient should have more than the file’s size in free disk space. A browser or service may also need temporary space or create an archive; the reviewed documentation does not establish a universal overhead amount.
- Compatible browser storage behavior: fsend says Chrome, Edge, and Opera use the File System Access API for direct-to-disk writing. It says Firefox and Safari buffer transfers in memory and save a ZIP at the end, which can make available RAM a limiting factor. These are fsend-specific compatibility statements, not guarantees for every service or future browser version.
- Working network paths: Speed and success depend on both devices’ connections and network configuration. Some implementations can use a TURN relay when a direct route is unavailable, but relay support is service-specific.
- Open browser tabs: The sender and recipient may need to keep their transfer tabs open until completion. Closing a required tab can interrupt the transfer.
How to send the file
- Choose a service and confirm compatibility. Review the service’s current browser and large-file guidance for the sender’s and recipient’s devices. FilePizza says its maximum depends on what the browser can handle; fsend describes different storage behavior by browser.
- Select the file in the sender’s browser. Start a transfer session in the web app. FilePizza describes sharing a short or long URL; fsend uses a one-time code.
- Share the invitation privately. Send the generated link or code only to the intended recipient. The recipient uses it to join the same session.
- Keep the required tabs open. FilePizza says the uploader must leave the browser window open until the transfer finishes, and fsend says both tabs must remain open.
- Wait for completion before closing either session. Leave time for a transfer of this size, and do not assume it can resume after a disconnection: the cited documentation does not establish a general resume guarantee.
Does “100GB+” mean there is no file-size limit?
No universal 100GB+ guarantee is established by the cited project and service documentation. FilePizza’s FAQ says, “As big as your browser can handle,” which describes a browser-dependent ceiling rather than a fixed promise. fsend likewise identifies the recipient’s free disk space and connection as constraints. Actual limits can vary with the browser, device memory and storage behavior, available disk space, implementation, network path, and connection quality.
There is no independently published success rate, benchmark, or universal maximum in these sources. Treat 100GB+ as a possible use case, not a proven outcome for every browser or network. If the file is essential and a failed transfer would be costly, confirm the service’s current limits and compatibility before relying on it.

Privacy and security: what direct transfer does and does not tell you
FilePizza says its WebRTC communications use DTLS, and WebTorrent describes WebRTC data channels as encrypted. That supports the narrower claim that the connection is encrypted in transit. It does not establish that a service collects no metadata, that either endpoint is secure, that the recipient is trustworthy, or that the complete service implementation has passed an independent audit.

They never pass through our servers.” That is the project’s description of its transfer path, not an independent audit finding. Its documentation also describes signaling and optional relay infrastructure, so “direct” should not be read as “serverless.”

When this approach fits
Browser-to-browser transfer is useful when both people can be online at the same time, can keep the required tabs open, and want to avoid first uploading a large payload to a cloud file host. It is less suitable when either side needs an offline download, a guaranteed resume feature, or a predictable maximum size that the service has not documented. For a recipient short on disk space, adding local storage may help meet the capacity requirement; it does not, by itself, make the WebRTC connection faster.
