Before selling, trading in, donating, or recycling a phone, tablet, computer, or other personal device, back up what you need, confirm you can access important accounts without it, remove cards and account links, and erase it using the manufacturer’s instructions. Then document the actual device accurately. AI can help organize verified details for a listing, but it cannot establish the device’s condition or replace your inspection.
1. Back up what you need before erasing
Make a list of the data and access you want to keep: photos, files, messages, passwords, payment cards, authenticator access, and important apps or accounts. Back up the data, then verify that the backup or replacement device can actually access it before you erase the device. The FTC’s phone preparation guidance and upgrade advice put backup ahead of removing personal information.
Do not substitute manual deletion of files for erasing the device. Apple warns that deleting items manually while signed in to iCloud can remove them from iCloud and other connected devices. Follow Apple’s preparation steps for applicable iPhone and iPad models.

2. Make sure you can still reach accounts and services
Before wiping, check that you can sign in to important accounts without relying on the device you plan to transfer. A reset can cut off access if the device is your only route to a verification code, authenticator app, or phone number associated with an account.

- Move or reactivate authenticator apps, and confirm you can use them on another device.
- Update the phone number attached to accounts if you are changing numbers. The FTC notes that accounts using the old number may need updating.
- Transfer control of smart-home devices or other services if the phone is their only controller.
The UK National Cyber Security Centre’s used-device guidance likewise advises checking account access and the ability to manage smart devices elsewhere before erasure.
3. Remove cards and unlink the device
Take out any physical SIM and SD cards. Then follow the device maker’s or trade-in provider’s instructions to sign out, deregister, or unlink accounts and trusted-device access. These steps differ by manufacturer, model, operating-system version, and program.

For iPhone and iPad
Check Find My and Activation Lock, Apple Pay, and iMessage if you are switching to a different ecosystem. Follow Apple’s directions for eSIM handling; if prompted during erasure, choose the option that matches whether you are transferring the eSIM. Apple says that erasing an iPhone or iPad turns off Find My and Activation Lock. See Apple’s device-preparation instructions for applicable details, including AppleCare.
For Android and other devices
Use the manufacturer’s exact account-removal and reset directions. If you are trading the device in, check the provider’s requirements too; some programs require applicable accounts to be removed and the device to be unlocked or deregistered before submission.

4. Erase it using the manufacturer’s procedure
Use the manufacturer’s built-in erase, factory-reset, or computer-erase procedure for the exact model and software version. Do not rely on deleting files individually. The FTC recommends restoring or resetting a phone and cautions that deleting information from a computer may not fully remove files; see its phone guidance and computer data-removal guidance. The NCSC also recommends a factory reset for a device being transferred.
A reset is standard consumer guidance, not a guarantee that every device’s data is unrecoverable. The NCSC cautions that “A determined expert – using specialist tools – may still be able to recover the data on a device.” If the device contains especially sensitive information, managed work data, or data subject to legal retention requirements, follow the relevant organization’s or legal requirements rather than assuming a consumer reset is sufficient.

5. Document the actual device before choosing a route
Record the details a buyer or trade-in program needs, and check them rather than guessing:
- Exact model and storage or configuration, if known.
- Carrier-locked or unlocked status, if known.
- Power or battery behavior, screen and body condition, and any faults or repairs.
- Functions you actually tested and any that did not work.
- Accessories included with the device.
Take clear photos of the real item and disclose defects. The FTC advises checking marketplace rules and protections, which vary by platform; its online shopping guidance is a starting point. Amazon’s condition guidance also emphasizes accurate product information. Requirements differ across services, so read the rules for the place where you list or trade in the device.

6. Compare selling, trade-in, donation, and recycling
Compare options using the factors that matter for your situation, rather than assuming one route is always best:
- Net value: What you will receive after any costs or deductions.
- Convenience and time: The effort involved in preparing, listing, shipping, or handing over the device.
- Eligibility: Whether the model, account status, condition, and functionality meet the program’s rules.
- Payment form: Whether you receive cash, store credit, or another form of value.
- Transaction protections: The payment, shipping, return, and dispute rules that apply.
Trade-in acceptance and value depend on the particular program and device. Amazon’s electronics trade-in criteria, for example, require a match to the selected product or version and that the submitter own the item; applicable account, component, and functionality requirements also apply. Amazon says an item that misses criteria may be downgraded or rejected. Check the live terms for the program you use rather than treating one company’s conditions as universal.

7. Use AI to organize a truthful listing
AI can turn your verified notes into a readable description, suggest a neutral title, or produce a checklist of details you still need to confirm. Review every claim before publishing. Do not ask it to infer battery health, hidden damage, repair history, storage size, carrier status, or which accessories are included. Use photographs of the real device: a generated substitute image could mislead a buyer about the item’s condition. This follows the FTC’s emphasis on accurate descriptions and actual-item photos in marketplace guidance and Amazon’s image requirements in its image guide.
If you list on Amazon, its image policy includes specific metadata requirements for photorealistic AI-generated people in applicable cases. That is an Amazon-specific rule, not a general requirement for every private-sale platform. Check the current policy for the service where you plan to list.
