To select multiple screenshots in Windows, open File Explorer and go to the folder containing them—usually Pictures > Screenshots for screenshots saved by Windows. Hold Shift and click the first and last file to select a continuous range, or hold Ctrl while clicking individual files that are separated in the list. You can also use keyboard selection or turn on File Explorer checkboxes.

Find the screenshots you want to select

Selection happens in File Explorer after the image files have been saved. It is separate from taking a new capture.

Check Pictures > Screenshots first

  1. Open File Explorer from the taskbar or Start menu.
  2. In the navigation pane, open Pictures.
  3. Open Screenshots.

Microsoft’s Windows 10 and Windows 11 guidance identifies Pictures > Screenshots as the location for screenshots saved through the Windows screenshot workflow. The exact folder can differ if you changed your save location, redirected your Pictures folder, or saved the image somewhere else.

Check where Snipping Tool saved the capture

Snipping Tool copies a capture to the clipboard and also provides a save action. A snip is not necessarily stored automatically in Pictures > Screenshots. Open the folder you selected when saving it, then select the files there.

Select a continuous group with Shift-click

Use this method when the screenshots you need appear next to one another in the current File Explorer view—for example, a run of captures from one project.

  1. Click the first screenshot in the group. Do not open it; select it with a single click.
  2. Hold down Shift.
  3. Click the last screenshot in the group.
  4. Release Shift.

Windows selects the range between the two files, including the first and last files. The range follows the order currently displayed in File Explorer. If you sort by name, date, type, or another column, the files between the two clicks can change.

When Shift-click is the best choice

  • You need every screenshot in a consecutive run.
  • The folder contains only the screenshots you want to process.
  • You want to copy, move, delete, or attach a whole block at once.

Select separate screenshots with Ctrl-click

Use Ctrl-click when the files you want are separated by screenshots you need to leave untouched.

  1. Click the first screenshot.
  2. Press and hold Ctrl.
  3. While continuing to hold Ctrl, click each additional screenshot you want.
  4. Release Ctrl after the final click.

Each Ctrl-click adds that file to the selection. Clicking an already selected file while holding Ctrl removes it, which is useful for correcting a mistake without starting over.

Make individual files easier to identify

Switch to a view that shows recognizable thumbnails or file names, then sort the folder by a useful column such as Date modified. Sorting does not change the files; it only changes the order in which a Shift-based range is interpreted.

Select screenshots with the keyboard

Keyboard selection is useful when a mouse or trackpad is inconvenient, or when you need precise control in a long list.

Select individual files with Ctrl, arrow keys, and Spacebar

  1. Click once in the file list, or use the arrow keys to place focus on a screenshot.
  2. Use the arrow keys to move to another item.
  3. Hold Ctrl while moving with the arrow keys so you can navigate without losing the current selection.
  4. Press Spacebar to select or deselect the focused item.
  5. Continue moving and pressing Spacebar for each screenshot you need.

Microsoft documents Ctrl plus arrow-key navigation with Spacebar for selecting multiple individual items in a window.

Select a range with Shift and an arrow key

Place focus on the first file, then use Shift + an arrow key to extend the selection to adjacent items. This is the keyboard equivalent of selecting a consecutive range and follows the order of the current file-list view.

Use visible checkboxes instead of modifier keys

File Explorer can display a checkbox beside each item. This makes the selection state visible and avoids having to keep Ctrl pressed while clicking.

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Select View on the command bar or ribbon.
  3. Choose Options, then Change folder and search options.
  4. Open the View tab in Folder Options.
  5. Enable Use check boxes to select items.
  6. Select OK.
  7. Return to the screenshot folder and click the checkbox for every file you want.

Checkboxes are particularly helpful in a dense folder, on a touch-enabled PC, or when you frequently make separate selections. You can turn the setting off later by clearing the same option.

Work with the selected screenshots

After selecting the files, use the command bar or right-click context menu for the operation you need. File Explorer is designed to find, open, organize, and manage files and folders.

  • Copy: Choose Copy, open the destination folder, and choose Paste.
  • Move: Choose Cut, open the destination folder, and choose Paste. You can also drag the selected files to another folder.
  • Delete: Choose Delete, then confirm if Windows asks. Deleted files normally go to the Recycle Bin.
  • Attach or upload: In an app’s file picker, navigate to the screenshot folder and use the same Shift-click, Ctrl-click, keyboard, or checkbox techniques.
  • Organize: Create or open a destination folder, then move or copy the selected files into it. The selection remains a group; you do not have to repeat the process for each image.

Before deleting or moving a large selection, glance at the highlighted names and count. A selected range can include files between the endpoints that were not obvious in a thumbnail view.

Do not confuse selecting files with taking a screenshot

Windows logo key + Shift + S opens the screen-capture workflow. It does not select several screenshots that are already saved in File Explorer. Use File Explorer and the methods above when your goal is to copy, move, attach, or delete existing image files.

Troubleshoot multiple-selection problems

The Screenshots folder is empty

Look for the save location used by Snipping Tool, or search File Explorer for the image name or file type. A capture copied only to the clipboard has not yet become a file that can be selected; save it first.

Shift selected the wrong files

Shift selects everything between the two endpoints in the current display order. Change the sort order or switch to a clearer view, then click the intended first and last files again. If the files are not truly consecutive, use Ctrl-click or checkboxes instead.

Ctrl-click removed a file

Ctrl-click toggles an individual item. If you click a file that is already highlighted, Windows removes it from the selection. Keep Ctrl held for every additional click and watch the highlight state before continuing.

  • SPACE TO OWN YOUR AI CONTENT – speed and capacity to download your high-res clips and photo edits.

The keyboard does not select anything

Make sure focus is in the file list rather than the address bar, search box, or navigation pane. Click a file once, then use the documented Ctrl-plus-arrow-and-Spacebar or Shift-plus-arrow combinations. If modifier keys are difficult to use, enable item checkboxes.

Checkboxes are not visible

Confirm that Use check boxes to select items is enabled under View > Options > Change folder and search options > View. Select OK, close and reopen the folder if necessary, and look beside the file names or thumbnails.

Selection disappears

Opening another folder, refreshing the view, or clicking an unselected file without a modifier can replace the current selection. If that happens, select the group again. For separate files, hold Ctrl during every click.

Windows version and support scope

The Microsoft guidance for these File Explorer and keyboard techniques covers Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025; that support-status change does not alter the selection mechanics described here. Menu appearance can vary slightly between Windows 10 and Windows 11, but the Shift, Ctrl, keyboard, and checkbox concepts are the same.

Or skip the browser setup

If your real goal is to generate screenshots of web pages rather than select image files already on your PC, ScreenshotNeo returns a website screenshot from one request. It is a developer API and MCP server, so it complements—rather than replaces—the File Explorer methods above. The API can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output.

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for authentication and options. A basic cURL request is:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://itechguides.com -o shot.webp

The same request in Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://itechguides.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

And in Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://itechguides.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Before capture, ScreenshotNeo can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots; yearly billing gives two months free. Every feature is available on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to begin.
