To see which Windows services are hosted by svchost.exe, open Command Prompt or PowerShell and run tasklist /svc. Find the svchost.exe row: its PID and service names show which services are associated with that process. You can also match a service to its process in Task Manager using the PID.
List services hosted by each process with tasklist
Microsoft documents tasklist for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Its /svc option displays the services associated with each running process on the local computer.
- Open Command Prompt or PowerShell.
- Run
tasklist /svc. - Find the
svchost.exeentry you want to inspect. Note its PID and the service names shown on that row.
A host can list one or more services, so use the names on the specific row rather than assuming each svchost.exe process contains exactly one service. The Microsoft tasklist reference describes the command, its /svc option, and its filters; it was last updated February 3, 2023.

If you know the service name, filter the output instead of scanning every process. For example, this command displays the process associated with the Windows Management Instrumentation service, whose service name is Winmgmt:
#1 Best Overall
- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
tasklist /svc /fi "Services eq Winmgmt"
Replace Winmgmt with the service name you need to look up. The filter matches a service name; it is not a filter for the descriptive name shown in some Windows interfaces. The command runs against the local computer by default.
Match a service to its PID in Task Manager
Task Manager can help when you recognize the service name or prefer a visual lookup. The PID is the link between a service and its hosting process.

- 256 GB SSD of storage.
- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
- Open Task Manager and select Services.
- Find the service and note the PID shown for it.
- Select Details and locate the process with the same PID. If you do not see a PID column, add it from the column options.
You can also right-click a service in the Services pane and choose Go to details to jump to its process. Microsoft demonstrates PID matching in its WMI high-CPU troubleshooting procedure. That example concerns WMI; it is a method for identifying a process, not proof that WMI—or any other service—is responsible for every performance issue.

Choose the inspection method that fits
| Method | Best for | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
tasklist /svc |
Quickly listing service-to-process mappings across the computer | Processes, PIDs, and associated service names |
| Task Manager | Following a familiar service name or jumping between service and process views | Service and process entries that can be matched by PID |
| Resource Monitor | A more visual alternative for inspecting activity | A graphical view; the cited Microsoft Q&A answer suggests it as an alternative |
| Process Explorer | Deeper visual process inspection | Process details; Microsoft Q&A moderator guidance suggests it as an alternative |
Microsoft Q&A moderator guidance dated February 4, 2026, points to resmon (Resource Monitor) and Sysinternals Process Explorer as additional inspection options. See the Microsoft Q&A response. These tools offer alternate views; the cited sources do not establish a speed benchmark between them.

What the mapping does—and does not—tell you
Finding a service under svchost.exe identifies which process hosts it. It does not establish that the service is causing high CPU or memory use, that it should be stopped, or that the process is malicious. For a performance problem, first identify the exact process and PID, then investigate the service and the specific symptom. Do not stop or disable a service solely because it appears in a service-host entry.

- Several
svchost.exeentries are not, on their own, evidence of malware or a fault. - Use the PID to connect a service entry with a process; a familiar service name alone does not identify which process instance you mean.
- Stopping a service can affect Windows or applications that depend on it. A troubleshooting step documented for a particular service, such as WMI, is not a general instruction for other services.
