Use your browser’s developer tools: start in the Console to see JavaScript messages and errors, then use the debugger to pause code and inspect what it is doing. If a click triggers an unexpected request, combine the Network panel with a breakpoint to trace the request back to the code that started it.

Start with the Console

The Console is the quickest way to see messages from page scripts, spot errors and run a small JavaScript expression in the page’s context. In Chrome, open DevTools directly with Command+Option+J on Mac, or Control+Shift+J on Windows, Linux or ChromeOS. You can also open DevTools from the browser’s developer tools menu. Shortcuts and menus can vary by browser version and platform. Chrome DevTools overview

  1. Open the page, then open its Console.
  2. Reload the page or repeat the action that seems to cause the problem.
  3. Look for errors, warnings and messages. Click an error’s source reference when available to inspect the relevant script.
  4. To check a value or test a small expression, enter it in the Console. It runs in the current page context, so avoid expressions that change data or trigger actions unless you intend them to.

Firefox calls its page-level panel the Web Console. Mozilla describes it as showing page-associated network requests, JavaScript, CSS and security errors and warnings, along with messages logged by JavaScript running in the page context. Mozilla Web Console documentation

Pause JavaScript and inspect what it is doing

A Console error tells you something went wrong; a debugger breakpoint lets you examine execution at a particular point. In Chrome, open the Sources panel, find the relevant script and set a breakpoint on a line you want to investigate. Repeat the action on the page. When execution pauses, inspect the current function’s variables and step through the code. You can also query values in the Console while the debugger is paused. Find a script and set a breakpoint

  1. Open DevTools and select Sources.
  2. Use the source navigation to find the script associated with the page or feature. If you can reach the code through an error or stack trace in the Console, use that reference as a starting point.
  3. Click the line number where you want execution to pause.
  4. Repeat the page action that runs the code. When the breakpoint is reached, inspect the displayed values and use the debugger’s stepping controls to follow execution.

When code is minified or hard to find

Use the debugger’s source navigation and filtering features to locate code. Minified files are harder to read, but Chrome documents that debugger stepping works with minified code. Framework-generated code may add noise, so start from the action, error or request you are tracing rather than trying to read every loaded script.

Trace an unexpected network request

If clicking a button or submitting a form sends the wrong request, inspect the request in the Network panel, then use a breakpoint to trace the AJAX or Fetch code that initiated it. The Network panel helps identify what happened on the wire; pausing in the debugger helps connect that request to the page’s execution. Chrome breakpoint documentation

Choose the right view for the question

What you need to learn Where to start What it shows
What errors or messages did the page produce? Console (Chrome) or Web Console (Firefox) Page-related logs, errors and warnings; the Console can also evaluate expressions in the page context.
What code ran, and what values did it use? Sources / debugger Execution paused at a breakpoint, with variable inspection and step-by-step debugging.
What code caused a request? Network plus debugger The Network panel exposes the request; a breakpoint helps trace it back to the AJAX or Fetch code.

Common problems and fixes

  • No message appears: reload the page or repeat the exact action while the Console is open. A script may only log something after a specific interaction.
  • The breakpoint never pauses: confirm the breakpoint is on code that runs during the action, then reproduce that action. If you are unsure which code is involved, start from a Console error or the request you saw in Network.
  • The source is difficult to read: use source navigation and filtering to locate the relevant code, then step through it rather than trying to understand a whole minified file at once.
  • You cannot find a familiar shortcut or panel: panel names, menus and shortcuts differ by browser and operating system. The steps here give Chrome’s documented shortcut and Chrome and Firefox panel names; consult the documentation for your browser and version for other exact paths.
