If you find an unauthorized withdrawal, charge, or transfer, contact your bank or credit union immediately using its official app, website, statement, or a phone number you already trust. Ask for the fraud department and what will stop further activity. Then secure any compromised sign-in details and recovery methods. The right next steps depend on whether someone stole a payment credential, took over an account, tricked you into sending money, or used your personal information to open accounts.
1. Contact your bank or credit union first
Use contact information from the institution’s official app, website, or a recent statement. Do not rely on a number or link in an unexpected call, text, or email. Tell the representative which transactions you dispute, when you noticed them, and whether a card, PIN, password, or verification code may have been exposed. Ask for the fraud department and a case or reference number.
Ask what action is appropriate to prevent further losses. Depending on what happened, the institution may recommend locking or replacing a card, changing credentials, stopping payments, or freezing or closing an account. Follow its instructions and ask how to submit any required dispute in writing. The FTC advises reporting a scam to your bank or credit union immediately; the CFPB describes the process for reporting and investigating unauthorized transactions (FTC: What To Do if You Were Scammed; CFPB: unauthorized transactions).
Keep a record of the disputed amounts and dates, when you contacted the institution, the names or departments of people you spoke with, and case numbers. Save relevant statements and messages. Do not assume a transfer can be reversed or that a claim will be reimbursed; ask the institution how the rules apply to your transaction and circumstances.

Know the reporting clock, but report immediately
For U.S. consumer accounts, the CFPB says an institution generally has 10 business days after notification to investigate an unauthorized transaction. It also says a consumer whose debit card or account security code or PIN was stolen should notify the institution within two business days of discovering the loss. The rules and potential liability depend on the facts and type of transaction, so notify the institution right away rather than waiting to determine which deadline applies. (CFPB: liability for unauthorized debit-card transactions)
2. Secure the accounts and ways to recover them
After contacting the institution, change the compromised password and any other account password that reused it. Change affected PINs, and enable two-factor authentication where available. Use a new, unique password for each important account. The FTC’s IdentityTheft.gov recovery guidance includes changing account logins, passwords, and PINs (IdentityTheft.gov: Recovery Steps).

- SECURE YOUR WALLET FROM e-PICKPOCKETING: Prevent potential identity and financial theft through your contactless cards. This is the simplest and most effective prevention solution! Block RFID and NFC signals, protect your personal information, and enjoy peace of mind wherever your travels or business take you.
- JAMMING CHIP: An antenna and jamming chip makes up the main components of the card. The antenna will sense incoming radio waves and draw power for the chip to create a jamming signal. Lifetime usage as the card does not require battery.
- BROAD WORKING DISTANCE: With a 2.4” working distance, your entire wallet stays protected. The premium RFID blocking card helps secure cards within 1.2” on either side, providing reliable protection against electronic pickpocketing.
- ULTRA-THIN & COMPACT: At the size of a standard credit card and at only 0.03” thick, the card will fit into any wallet, purse or card case. Keep your wallet compact with no added bulk from this card. Best for travel, business, and everyday use.
- TEST THE CARD: Test the card is working at your local supermarket. At the self-service checkout machines, combine the card and a contactless card on the payment reader. Payment with the contactless card will be blocked and an error message should occur on the reader.
Protect the email account and phone number used to verify your identity or reset your bank password. If either was compromised, change its password, sign out other active sessions or devices, and check recovery email addresses and phone numbers for changes you did not make. Make sure you still control the phone number and email address receiving bank alerts and verification codes. A criminal with access to those recovery routes may be able to regain access even after you change a banking password.
If a scammer accessed your phone or computer, use the FTC’s hacked-account guidance for that device or service. When device access is part of the incident, FTC guidance says to update security software and scan the device; this is a conditional step, not a substitute for securing financial accounts (FTC: What To Do if Your Social Media Account Was Hacked).

3. Report identity theft when personal information or new accounts are involved
A stolen card or unauthorized transfer does not automatically mean someone has stolen your identity. If you discover unfamiliar accounts opened in your name, or believe personal information such as your Social Security number was misused, report identity theft at IdentityTheft.gov. The FTC provides an Identity Theft Report and a recovery plan tailored to the circumstances. For a scam that does not involve identity theft, report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
The CFPB’s identity-theft guidance also advises closing compromised accounts, reporting the theft to local police and at IdentityTheft.gov, and using fraud alerts or security freezes to protect credit history and finances (CFPB: What do I do if I am a victim of identity theft?). Whether a police report is useful can depend on the situation; retain copies of any reports you make.

4. Protect your credit if your identity may be misused
A fraud alert and a security freeze help guard against someone opening new credit in your name. They do not recover stolen funds or secure a bank account that is already under someone else’s control. Handle bank contact and account containment first, then choose the credit protection that fits your situation.
| Option | How it works | What you need to do | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fraud alert | Asks creditors to take steps to verify your identity before opening new credit. One nationwide credit reporting company must notify the other two. | Request it from one of the three nationwide credit reporting companies. | A less restrictive step when you want creditors alerted but do not want to place a freeze at each bureau. |
| Security freeze | Restricts access to your credit file for new-credit decisions. | Place it separately with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Freezes are free. | A stronger restriction if you do not expect to apply for credit soon and can manage placing and lifting freezes with each bureau. |
A freeze can complicate applications for credit while it is in place, because you may need to lift it for a lender to access your file. A fraud alert does not create that same file-access restriction. Neither measure prevents someone from taking over an existing account. See the CFPB’s guidance on fraud alerts and security freezes.

5. Watch for another attempt to steal money
After an incident, someone may pose as a bank employee, government agency, or recovery specialist and offer to retrieve the money. Be suspicious of anyone who asks you to move money to “protect it,” withdraw cash, or buy gold and hand it over. The CFPB warns that the FTC will not ask people to do those things. Contact organizations using official details you find independently, and keep checking statements for additional unauthorized activity (CFPB: What to do if you’ve been scammed).
Credit monitoring or identity-recovery services may be available, but they do not stop current transfers or replace reporting the incident and securing accounts. Free security freezes are available through the three nationwide credit reporting companies.
