Secure OBS Studio before you go live by downloading it from OBS’s official site, limiting plugins to trusted and compatible extensions, protecting remote control with a password, and keeping your stream key private. Then secure your streaming-platform account and preview the exact scenes and sources viewers will see. OBS settings do not secure your YouTube account or protect a stream key that has been exposed.
1. Download OBS Studio from the official source
Get OBS Studio from the official OBS download page. OBS’s Help Portal says downloads from obsproject.com provide the latest version and are safe from malware; it also warns that requests to pay for OBS are scams. Avoid lookalike download pages and installers offered by unsolicited messages.
Release numbers change. The OBS homepage listed version 32.2.2, dated August 14, when checked on October 4, 2026; confirm the current release on the official download page rather than relying on an old version number.
2. Keep plugins limited, compatible, and verifiable
Plugins are community-made extensions, not all part of OBS itself. Install only the ones you need, and check each plugin’s own documentation for operating-system, architecture, and OBS-version compatibility before installing it or updating OBS. An extension that no longer loads after an update may have a compatibility or location issue; that alone does not establish that it is malicious.

Account for the March 2026 plugin-download incident
On March 9, 2026, OBS forum administrator Fenrir reported compromised plugin-resource-owner accounts and malicious replacements of some downloads. The notice named ClickSound versions 2026-02-28 and 1.0.1, SRBeep versions 3.0.0–3.0.3, and obs-websocket version 2026-02-28 / 5.0.2. Its scope was specific: “Only downloads of these plugins through the forum Resource section were affected.” It also said the obs-websocket version bundled with OBS was not affected.
If you downloaded one of those named versions through the forum Resource section during the affected period, follow the official OBS incident notice for removal and malware-scan advice. Do not infer that every version or download source was affected.

Check plugin loading rules when troubleshooting
OBS’s September 21, 2026 guidance on legacy plugin locations says OBS Studio 33.0 flags plugins in certain old Windows locations as legacy, and plugins in a particular Program Files location will not be loaded starting with OBS Studio 34.0. This describes loading behavior, not proof that all plugins in those locations are unsafe. Check the current guidance and the plugin’s actual location before changing or reinstalling it.
3. Protect OBS remote control
OBS Studio 28 and later includes WebSocket remote control by default, so users of current versions generally do not need a separate obs-websocket plugin. If you use WebSocket, protect it with authentication and a strong password. OBS’s guide recommends password protection against unauthorized control.

- In OBS, open Tools → obs-websocket Settings.
- Enable authentication and set a password.
- Keep that password out of shared screenshots, stream overlays, public posts, and other places viewers or untrusted people can access.
Without authentication, someone with access to the WebSocket connection may be able to control OBS. The password protects this remote-control interface; it does not secure your streaming-platform account or stream key.
4. Treat your stream key like a password
A stream key lets an encoder send a feed to the platform. YouTube describes stream keys as “your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not show the key on stream, include it in a public screenshot, or share it with people who do not need it.

If your YouTube stream key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then replace the old key in OBS or your encoder. YouTube says only channel owners or managers can reset a stream key. These steps and permissions are specific to YouTube; other services have their own credential controls.

OBS cannot decide who has permission to manage your channel or whether your broadcast is public. On YouTube, give channel admin access only to people you trust, and confirm the intended audience setting in the platform’s live-control interface before going live. YouTube supports public, private, and unlisted live streams; choose the one that matches your audience and purpose. Do not assume another streaming service uses the same labels or controls.

6. Preview the broadcast before going live
Use OBS Studio Mode to preview scenes and sources before pushing them live. Inspect the actual output for desktop notifications, private browser tabs, account names, personal documents, or an unintended capture source. Previewing helps you notice what is visible; OBS does not automatically detect or block sensitive information.

- Check the platform’s live privacy setting before pressing Go Live.
Pre-stream security checklist
- OBS came from obsproject.com, not a third-party download or paid offer.
- Installed plugins are necessary, documented, and compatible with your OS and OBS version.
- If you used one of the specifically named forum downloads in the March 2026 incident, you followed the official notice’s remediation advice.
- WebSocket authentication is enabled and its password is not exposed.
- Your stream key is private; if exposed, you reset it and updated OBS.
- Only trusted people have channel-management access, and the platform’s audience setting is correct.
- You inspected the live preview for unintended content.
