Disconnecting a site from MetaMask does not revoke token approvals you previously granted it. To review wallet access thoroughly, check connected dapps and their account/network permissions, inspect on-chain token approvals separately, and treat security alerts as useful signals—not guarantees.
Know which kind of access you are changing
MetaMask has distinct controls for a dapp connection, the accounts and networks a dapp can access, and on-chain permission to spend tokens. Removing one does not automatically remove the others.

Review connected dapps and their permissions
MetaMask Extension
- Open MetaMask and select the menu in the top-right corner.
- Choose All Permissions to review connected dapps. If your version uses another label, look for its permissions or connections control.
- Select a dapp to inspect or edit the accounts and networks it can access. Remove accounts or disable networks you do not want available to that dapp.
- Disconnect any site you no longer use or recognize.
A connected dapp may suggest transactions for connected accounts. If it has multiple enabled networks, it may switch among them without asking you to change the network manually each time. Review both accounts and networks rather than treating a connection as a simple yes-or-no setting. See MetaMask’s guide to managing dapp permissions.
MetaMask Mobile
MetaMask’s documented disconnect flow is different from Extension: open Explore, visit the dapp, tap its account icon, and choose Disconnect all. Interface labels can vary by app version; use the corresponding connection control if the wording differs. MetaMask explains this in its wallet disconnection guide.

Inspect and revoke token approvals separately
MetaMask defines a token approval as “permission for a dapp to access and move a specific type of token from your wallet.” Disconnecting a dapp does not revoke this on-chain permission; an approved contract may still be able to use its allowance. A token approval can also be broader than a single transaction, including an unlimited allowance.
- Open MetaMask Portfolio and review the existing token approvals associated with your wallet.
- Identify approvals you do not recognize or no longer need. Take care to distinguish the token and contract involved before acting.
- Revoke unwanted approvals through the approval-management flow. Revocation is an on-chain action and may require a transaction and network fee.
MetaMask’s disconnection and token approval help page describes the difference and points users to MetaMask Portfolio to view and revoke unwanted approvals. Removing a connection is useful, but it is not a substitute for checking allowances.

Understand security alerts and their privacy tradeoff
MetaMask says security alerts are enabled by default in Extension and Mobile. For users onboarded with a Secret Recovery Phrase, the documented controls are Settings > Privacy in Extension and Settings > Security & Privacy in Mobile, with Basic Functionality controlling the feature. MetaMask says accounts onboarded through Google, Apple, or Telegram always have the feature on. Labels and eligibility may change, so confirm the current control in your app. See MetaMask’s security alerts guide.
Alerts can classify activity as Warning or Malicious, but they are informational: they do not guarantee that threats will be detected or stop you from proceeding. A missing Verified badge does not by itself mean a site or token is unsafe, and verification is not an endorsement or guarantee. If MetaMask classifies a site as malicious, its guidance is not to connect or sign and to close the site.

There is also a data-sharing tradeoff. MetaMask says its transaction simulation and security checks send the dapp URL, JSON-RPC request method, chain ID, and transaction data to MetaMask or security partners. It says those providers do not receive your Secret Recovery Phrase, private keys, or other credentials. MetaMask names Blockaid among its partners and also describes additional threat-detection providers; not every check should be attributed to one provider. What advanced permissions change
Some dapps that support smart-account functionality may offer ERC-7715 advanced permissions. Unlike a conventional token approval, these can specify limits or conditions—for example, an amount, how frequently access may be used, or an end time. MetaMask describes the feature as new and available only in some dapps; it is not the default model for ordinary token approvals. You can revoke a permission or allow it to end when its configured expiration is reached. Read MetaMask’s explanation of advanced permissions.

Use wallet settings as supporting safeguards
MetaMask’s permissions and alert controls address particular risks; they are not a guarantee against loss. A hardware wallet compatible with MetaMask, such as an integration listed by MetaMask, is an optional additional security measure, not a replacement for reviewing connections and approvals. Check MetaMask’s wallet integrations for supported options. A practical review routine
- Review connected dapps and remove connections you no longer use or recognize.
- For each retained dapp, check which accounts and networks are enabled.
- Review token approvals separately in MetaMask Portfolio; revoke allowances you do not recognize or need.
- Check your security-alert setting and consider the request-data sharing described above.
- When a site or request raises a malicious warning, do not connect or sign; close the site.
