To protect a public game server from DDoS attacks, filter traffic before it reaches the server’s internet connection. Choose a hosting provider or mitigation service that supports the game’s actual TCP or UDP traffic, route players through that protection, and prevent attackers from bypassing it to reach the origin IP. A local firewall reduces exposed services, but cannot restore connectivity if an attack saturates the upstream link.

Why game-server DDoS protection must be upstream

A distributed denial-of-service attack overwhelms a service with traffic or requests, disrupting legitimate connections. Some attacks use reflection: CISA describes how attackers can exploit publicly reachable UDP services and spoof a victim’s address so the resulting traffic floods the victim. CISA recommends stateful UDP inspection and coordination with upstream providers. CISA’s alert on UDP-based reflection attacks explains the attack pattern.

If malicious traffic fills the connection between your server and the internet, a firewall on the server or local network cannot make that link available again. Filtering needs to take place upstream, before the traffic reaches the bottleneck. A local firewall remains useful for limiting which services and ports are exposed, but it is a supporting measure, not a substitute for upstream mitigation.

Choose protection that supports your game’s traffic

Do not assume that a service protecting a website also protects a game server. Website CDN or HTTP protection does not automatically proxy custom TCP or UDP traffic. Confirm the supported protocol, ports, game behavior, plan eligibility, and how the provider handles traffic it does not recognize.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Game hosting with provider-side protection

This can be a practical choice if you can move the server and the provider explicitly covers your game and server type. Check which game titles and versions are supported, which server generations qualify, and whether protection must be enabled and configured for each public IP. For example, OVHcloud documents its Game DDoS Protection for its Bare Metal Game servers; supported profiles vary by title and server generation, and rules must be configured for protected IPs and game protocol or port requirements. See OVHcloud’s Game firewall documentation for its scope and configuration details.

TCP/UDP reverse-proxy mitigation

A reverse proxy can protect an existing origin or a custom game protocol if it supports the game’s traffic and players actually connect through it. Cloudflare says Spectrum provides layer 3–4 protection for TCP- and UDP-based attacks. Its documentation says custom TCP/UDP applications require Enterprise with Spectrum as a paid add-on; do not assume that ordinary website protection includes this capability. Check Cloudflare Spectrum’s documentation for current scope and eligibility.

Host or ISP mitigation with a local firewall

Ask your hosting provider or ISP whether it filters attacks upstream, whether protection is always on or activated after escalation, and how to reach its emergency response team. Pair that protection with narrow local firewall rules. CISA advises coordinating mitigation with upstream providers; local filtering alone cannot stop a flood that has already saturated the connection.

  • Protocol and game coverage: Does protection cover the game’s TCP or UDP traffic, its specific ports, query or status traffic, and any voice or administration service that must remain public?
  • Mitigation location: Is attack traffic filtered before it reaches your host’s access link? Is protection always on, or does it require an incident-time request?
  • Game-aware rules: Are there supported profiles for your title and server version? What happens to traffic that does not match a profile?
  • False positives: How can rules be tuned if legitimate players are blocked, and what logs or diagnostics can you review?
  • Origin and player IP handling: Can the origin be restricted to the provider’s proxy ranges while preserving legitimate player identity if the game needs source IP information?
  • Operational fit: Which regions are available, how is latency handled, who responds to an emergency, and what are the current commercial terms?

Available provider documentation does not establish a numeric cross-provider comparison of capacity, performance, or cost. Treat vendor figures as descriptions of that vendor’s service, not independent comparative measurements. Cloudflare, for example, reports an average of up to three seconds to detect and mitigate layer 3–4 attacks at its edge in documentation last updated April 15, 2026. That is a vendor-reported average, not a guarantee for every attack or deployment. Its documentation also describes sensitivity adjustments and logging for investigating false positives; see Cloudflare’s DDoS protection overview.

Set up protection without leaving a direct path to the server

  1. Inventory the public service. Record every public IP, game title and version, required TCP and UDP ports, query or status ports, and any voice, administration, or monitoring services. Note whether multiple games share an IP and whether all player connections can be routed through a proxy or provider edge.
  2. Confirm the protection’s exact scope. Ask whether the service supports each required protocol and port, whether mitigation is always on, whether game-specific profiles are available, what happens to unsupported traffic, and how false positives are reviewed. Do not infer game UDP protection from a provider’s website or CDN protection.
  3. Route players through the protected endpoint. Update the connection details players use so game traffic passes through the mitigation service. A proxy does not help traffic that continues to connect directly to the origin.
  4. Replace the old origin IP where feasible. After migration, rotate the exposed IP so attackers cannot keep targeting a previously known address. Then restrict inbound origin traffic to the proxy or provider’s published address ranges and only the ports the game requires. Preserve legitimate player identity with a supported method if the game depends on source IP.
  5. Apply least-privilege firewall rules. Allow only required protocols and ports; disable unrelated public services. If using OVHcloud’s Game firewall, its documentation recommends a default-deny policy and requires rules on each protected IP.
  6. Prepare an incident path. Keep the provider’s emergency contact details available. Know how to request tuning, and collect timestamps plus relevant flow or packet evidence. Tell the provider whether the symptom is packet loss, high latency, failed connections, or server resource exhaustion; those symptoms can point to different bottlenecks.

Recognize what mitigation can and cannot promise

Protection is not a universal uptime guarantee. Coverage depends on the service’s supported protocols, ports, profiles, configuration, and ability to keep traffic on the protected path. A reverse proxy is only useful when players use it and the origin cannot be reached around it. Firewall rules can also block legitimate traffic if they are too restrictive, so ask how the provider supports tuning and investigation.
