To secure a portable 5G hotspot, keep Wi-Fi security enabled, replace the network password with a unique one, and choose the strongest security mode supported by both the hotspot and the devices that need to connect. If the hotspot has a separate administrator password, change that too. Use the device’s own screen, app, or web settings; the menus and login details vary by model and carrier.
How do I change my hotspot password?
The Wi-Fi password controls whether a phone, laptop, or tablet can join the hotspot’s wireless network. Change it in the hotspot’s settings interface, then reconnect your devices using the new password.
- Identify the exact model. Check the hotspot’s screen or label, or consult the carrier’s instructions or the device manual. Confirm the model and carrier variant before using a login address, default credential, or menu path.
- Open the settings interface. Depending on the hotspot, this may be its touchscreen, a manufacturer app, or a browser-based admin page. Sign in with the credentials for that device.
- Find the Wi-Fi settings. For example, NETGEAR’s Nighthawk M6 guide describes changing wireless settings from the touchscreen or through Settings > Setup > Wireless in its web interface. NETGEAR’s app instructions for supported Nighthawk hotspot models use Settings > Wi-Fi Settings. - Set a new Wi-Fi password and apply the change. Keep password protection enabled. The precise controls and security options depend on the model.
- Reconnect your devices. If Wi-Fi restarts or your phone or computer disconnects, join the hotspot again with the new password. NETGEAR notes that previously connected devices need the updated credentials after settings are applied.
If the labels on your screen do not match these examples, follow the instructions for your exact hotspot rather than guessing an admin address or reusing another model’s default login.
What is the difference between my hotspot Wi-Fi password and admin password?
The Wi-Fi password lets client devices join the hotspot network. The administrator password, when the hotspot has one, opens its settings interface. Changing one does not necessarily change the other, so secure both separately.

If your hotspot exposes a separate admin password, replace any factory default with a unique password. Do not assume a particular hotspot has a separate credential or that its default login matches another model’s.

Which Wi-Fi security mode should I choose?
Choose the strongest mode supported by both the hotspot and the devices that need access. A newer security mode may prevent older phones, laptops, or other clients from connecting.

How can I stop unknown devices from joining?
Use a unique Wi-Fi password and leave security enabled. If your hotspot provides a connected-device list, review it for devices you do not recognize. Some models also offer a device limit or an allow-list, but these features are not available on every hotspot.
Motorola documents connected-device management on supported models. Check your own manual or settings interface to see whether comparable controls exist: Motorola hotspot instructions. If an unfamiliar device appears, change the Wi-Fi password and reconnect the devices you trust with the new one.

Why do the instructions differ between hotspots?
Portable hotspots do not all use the same setup interface or credentials. One model may expose wireless controls on its touchscreen; another may rely on a manufacturer app or a web portal. Carrier variants can differ too, so follow the manual for the exact model rather than treating an example’s URL, default password, or menu path as universal.
