Decode the JSON string into PHP arrays or objects, then search the specific array or property that contains the value. json_decode() parses JSON; it does not search nested data for you. For a flat PHP array, use array_search(); for records nested in JSON, traverse them and compare the relevant field.
Decode the JSON into the representation you want
Use json_decode($json, true) to represent JSON objects as associative arrays. Omit the second argument, or pass false, to represent them as objects instead. Choose the form that fits how the rest of your code accesses the data. See the PHP json_decode() documentation.

Search a field in nested JSON records
Navigate to the array of records and compare the field you care about. This loop stops at the first record whose id is the integer 8:

}This comparison is type-sensitive: the JSON number 8 decodes as an integer here, while the JSON string "8" decodes as a string and will not match 8 with ===. If the input structure may be missing keys or may not contain an array, check its shape before traversing it.
Search a flat PHP array for a value
When you already have a flat array of values, array_search() returns the key of the first match or false if there is no match. Its third argument enables strict type comparison:

}Use !== false to test the result: a valid match can have the key 0, which is falsey in PHP. To get every matching key rather than only the first, use array_keys($values, $needle, true). The array_search() manual documents its default loose comparison and strict option.
Handle invalid JSON and choose validation appropriately
Passing JSON_THROW_ON_ERROR to json_decode() makes malformed JSON raise a JsonException. Handle it if invalid input is an expected possibility:

}Without that flag, a failed decode returns null; the JSON error functions can help distinguish a decode failure from a valid JSON value of null. The manual also documents the default nesting-depth limit of 512 and flags such as JSON_BIGINT_AS_STRING, which can matter when decoding large integers. See the decoding options and error behavior.
Use json_validate() only for syntax-only checks
json_validate() is available in PHP 8.3 and later. It returns whether a UTF-8 string is syntactically valid JSON, which is useful when you need to check validity but do not need the decoded value. If you will decode the same string next, skip the separate validation call: json_decode() already parses and validates it, so calling both parses the input twice. See the json_validate() manual.
