Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11If you need to find a word or phrase inside a collection of saved web pages, look for a full-text search tool, not just a filename search. “HTM Search Tool” is not a clearly identifiable current product name; it is a useful shorthand for searching the contents of local .htm and .html files.
For a one-time search, a dedicated content-search utility can scan a folder and show matching text. For quick filename lookup, use Everything. If you search the same archive often, consider a tool that builds a full-text index. The right choice also depends on whether you want raw HTML source or text a browser displays.
Choose the search method that matches your goal
| What you need | Suitable approach | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Find files by name or extension | Everything, a filename-search utility | Its fast index is for filenames and folders, not file contents. |
| Find a phrase inside pages for a one-time search | A dedicated content-search utility | A live scan can take longer as the collection grows. |
| Search the same collection repeatedly | A full-text indexing tool | It takes time and storage to build an index, which can become stale. |
| Automate searches or use regular expressions | A command-line or advanced text-search utility | Results typically come from raw source and can include tags, scripts, and comments. |
| Find what appears in a browser | HTML-to-text extraction or a rendering-aware workflow | Source search cannot find text created or fetched only when a page runs. |
The extensions .htm and .html generally refer to the same HTML file type; the shorter extension is a historical convention. Include both in searches unless you know the archive uses only one.
Try File Explorer, but do not assume it searches every file’s contents
- Open the folder containing the saved pages in File Explorer.
- Use the search box and look for the term or phrase, limiting the file type with
*.htmor*.htmlwhere the search interface permits. If you need both extensions and the query syntax does not support combining them, run the searches separately. - If files are missing from the results, check whether the folder is indexed and accessible. Windows content-search behavior can depend on the Windows version, file handlers, location, permissions, and indexing settings.
- For a dependable one-off scan, use a dedicated content-search tool rather than relying on filename results as proof that the text is absent.
Windows may find matching filenames even when it is not indexing the contents of those files. Network shares, removable drives, cloud-only files, and excluded folders may behave differently from local indexed folders. The original 2002 question about searching roughly 20,000 .htm pages suggested Windows’ old “Files and Folders” search; its interface and behavior are not a current guide to Windows 10 or Windows 11. The historical question is at AnandTech’s HTM search tool discussion.

Use Everything for quick file lookup—or an occasional content scan
Everything is designed primarily to locate files and folders by name. Its official documentation describes fast filename indexing on local NTFS volumes and real-time updates; it is a strong choice for discovering which HTML files exist, not a substitute for an indexed full-text search system. See Everything’s documentation.
Example filename searches include:
*.htmfor files ending in.htm*.htmlfor files ending in.html*.htm | *.htmlto combine the two patterns, subject to the installed version’s search syntax
Everything also supports searching contents with its content: function. For example, try content:"search phrase" ext:htm, then repeat with ext:html if necessary. Syntax and function availability can vary by version; check the installed version’s Help or search-function documentation.

This content search is not the same as Everything’s rapid filename lookup: Everything’s FAQ says file contents are not indexed, so it reads files during a content search and the scan may be slow across a large collection. Everything is freeware, according to the same FAQ.
Search HTML contents with a graphical utility
A dedicated content-search program is a better starting point when you do not know the filename and want matching fragments to inspect. File Search Assistant documents searches of .htm files, previews with highlighted matches, regular expressions, network folders, ZIP archives, image alt text, and options to convert HTML to text or search it as raw data. Its product page advertises a 30-day fully functional trial; a current purchase price is not stated there.

- Choose the folder that contains the pages as the search location.
- Set the file mask to include
*.htmand*.html. In a tool that accepts semicolon-separated masks, this may look like*.htm;*.html; follow that program’s syntax. - Enable recursive search if pages are stored in subfolders.
- Enter a word or phrase, then choose case sensitivity, whole-word matching, or a regular expression as needed.
- Choose HTML-to-text or plain-text extraction to focus on page text; choose raw or binary/source search when tags, attributes, scripts, comments, or URLs are part of the target.
- Run the search and inspect the preview or report before opening a result in a browser or editor.
Other advanced utilities may offer HTML-aware extraction or batch and regex operations. For example, PowerGREP’s manual documents HTML search configurations. That is a more specialized fit than a simple folder scan; a current price is not established here.

/Ssearches subdirectories./Iignores case./Nprints line numbers./Pskips files with non-printable characters./C:treats the following phrase as one literal search string.
Replace the example path and phrase with your own. This searches source text, not a browser-rendered page. A hit can be in a script or comment rather than visible content, and a phrase split by HTML tags may not match. Encoding limitations and malformed or very long files can also make results confusing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Know what a match in an HTML file actually means
Searching HTML can mean searching different layers of a document. A raw-source search can match visible text, but also titles, metadata, link targets, attributes, comments, CSS class names, IDs, JavaScript, and embedded data. A plain-text extraction tool tries to ignore markup; a rendering-aware search may account for more browser behavior. Check which mode a utility uses before treating its results as page text.

Even visible words may not appear as one continuous string in the source. For example, <p>Searchable</p> contains the word directly, while <p>Search<span>able</span></p> can display “Searchable” without that exact source string. Similarly, the visible ampersand in a page might be stored as &. Text inserted by JavaScript or fetched from an external service may not exist in the saved file at all. A local source search cannot find content that is only generated or retrieved when the page runs.
Troubleshoot missing or noisy results
- No results: Search both extensions, confirm the root folder and subfolders, and check access permissions. If using Windows Search, check indexing; if using a content scanner, confirm it is configured to search file contents.
- Some files are skipped: Check whether the pages are inside ZIP archives, on a network share, on removable storage, or cloud-only. Some tools search ZIP files or network locations; others require extracted files or a direct scan. File Search Assistant documents ZIP and network-folder support, but support varies by tool.
- Browser shows the phrase, but source search misses it: Look for tags interrupting the phrase, encoded entities, alternate character encodings, or text inserted by scripts or external requests. Try HTML-to-text extraction or inspect the page source and its dependencies.
- Too many irrelevant matches: Raw HTML can repeat navigation and footer text across every page, and may match scripts, comments, URLs, and style names. Switch to text extraction, use a whole-word match, or narrow the folder or file mask.
- Accented or non-English text fails: Older files may use encodings such as Windows-1252 or ISO-8859-1 rather than UTF-8, or may mix encodings. Try a search utility with encoding controls and check how the file is actually saved.
- New files do not appear in an indexed search: Confirm the folder is included and accessible, then refresh or rebuild the full-text index if the tool offers that option. Live scans see files at query time, while an index can lag behind changes.
What matters more than the number of files
A 20,000-file archive does not, by itself, determine which tool is best. Total file size, storage speed, nested folders, network latency, encodings, and how often you repeat searches all affect the choice. A direct scan avoids index setup but reads files when you search. A full-text index can speed repeated queries, at the cost of initial processing, storage, and maintenance; inaccessible or excluded folders can still produce gaps.
For most people, the practical distinction is simple: use a filename index to find pages, a content-search utility to find words inside them, and text extraction or rendering-aware search when the question is what a browser actually displays.
