To find a feature or bug fix in GitHub history, search commit messages for likely terms, narrow the results by file, author, date, or branch, then inspect the candidate commit’s patch. If you need to locate a code change rather than wording in a commit message, use Git’s -S or -G options instead.

Choose the kind of history you need

There are two different searches: one looks for words in commit messages; the other looks for changes to code. Start broad, then add a filter only when you have a reasonable clue. A path filter, for example, cannot find a change in a file you have guessed incorrectly.

Question Start with What it searches
“Was this feature or fix mentioned in a commit?” git log --all --grep='terms' Commit message text
“Which commits touched this file?” git log --all -- path/to/file Commits affecting that path
“When did this literal or pattern change?” git log --all -S'...' -- path/ or -G'...' Added and removed code in commit patches
“Who introduced the line that is still here?” git blame or GitHub’s Blame view Current-line attribution

Search locally with Git

Search commit messages

From the repository directory, run:

git log --all --oneline --grep='login timeout'

--grep searches commit-message text, not the source code itself. Try alternative wording, ticket IDs, function names, and older names if the first search has no useful results. With multiple --grep patterns, Git normally matches commits containing any of them; add --all-match when the commit must match every supplied pattern. See the Git project’s commit-history options.

Limit results to a likely file or directory

Put the path after -- to distinguish it from other Git options:

git log --all --oneline -- src/auth/session.ts

This returns commits that touched the specified path. For a directory, use the directory path, such as src/. If you do not know where the change occurred, search the repository-wide log before adding a path restriction.

Search the actual code changes

Use -S to find commits that changed how many times an exact string occurs, or -G to find commits whose added or removed patch lines match a regular expression:

# Commits that changed the occurrence count of this literal
git log --all -S'RETRY_LIMIT' -- src/

# Commits with added or removed lines matching this regular expression
git log --all -G'retry[_ ]limit' -- src/

These options answer different questions. If a line changes while the number of occurrences stays the same, -S can miss it while -G finds it. Git documents these distinctions in its diff options reference.

Filter by author, committer, or date

Add one filter at a time so an incorrect assumption does not conceal the commit:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
git log --all --author='name or email'
  --since='2025-01-01' --until='2025-04-01' --oneline

Git also supports --committer. Author and committer identify different roles, and their dates can differ after a commit is amended or history is rewritten. A date range is a useful narrowing clue, not proof that a change did or did not happen in that period.

Search all available refs and check clone depth

--all asks Git to consider commits reachable from all refs available in your local repository, rather than only the current branch. It cannot search history that is not present in the clone. If the results stop too early, the repository may be shallow or missing relevant refs; retrieve more history or use GitHub’s repository history view.

Search in GitHub’s web interface

Use repository history for a branch-wide search

Open the repository’s commits view to browse branch history, then inspect likely candidates. A file’s History view is narrower: it follows commits affecting that file. GitHub documents file viewing and history in Viewing and understanding files.

Use Blame for a line that still exists

On a file page, choose Blame to see which commits and authors are associated with its current lines. The command-line equivalent is git blame path/to/file. Blame is useful when the line remains in the current file; for deleted code or a substantially rewritten line, search history with -S or -G instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Activity and Compare to inspect repository changes

The repository Activity view can help locate events such as pushes, merges, force pushes, and branch changes; its filters include branch, user, period, and activity type. Once you find a relevant event, Compare can show what changed. GitHub’s guides cover the Activity view and comparing commits.

Use GitHub’s API for a repeatable query

For scripts or integrations, GitHub’s REST API list-commits endpoint accepts filters for ref (sha), path, author, committer, since, and until. API date filters use ISO 8601 timestamps, and results are paginated, so retrieve additional pages when you need the full result set. See GitHub’s REST commits documentation. For query-driven integrations, the GraphQL commit history connection supports author, path, since, and until arguments; GitHub describes its results as linear history in the same order as git log (GraphQL commits reference).

Check the candidate commit before calling it the fix

A matching phrase or changed line is a lead, not confirmation. Inspect the commit’s files and patch to verify that it made the change you are looking for:

  1. In a local clone, run git show <commit-sha>.

  2. On GitHub, open the commit and review its changed files and diff.

  3. If the change is meaningful only relative to another revision, compare the commits or refs in GitHub’s Compare view.

A feature name may not appear in the message, and a matching string may be incidental. The patch provides the evidence for deciding whether the candidate actually introduced, changed, or removed the behavior.

Account for author and committer dates

Git records an author date and a committer date. They can diverge after amending, rebasing, force-pushing, or other history rewriting, so a date-filtered result may not line up with the date you expected. GitHub documents viewing commit details from a timeline and date-based views for each date type in its commit details guide. When a date filter misses a likely result, try the other date basis or remove the date restriction and inspect the commit.
