In Java, the shortest fixed-distance example is new Actions(driver).scrollByAmount(0, 500).perform();. The documented wheel actions were introduced in Selenium 4.2, and Selenium’s wheel-actions guide is marked Chromium-only, so check browser and binding support before relying on them outside Chromium.
Choose the right way to scroll
- Known distance: use a wheel delta for incremental movement, such as scrolling down 500 pixels.
- Known destination: use
scrollToElementto bring a target into view without guessing how far away it is. - Nested region or specific starting point: use a wheel origin relative to an element or viewport coordinate.
- Page-bottom or DOM-specific behavior: use JavaScript when the browser’s document scrolling methods are a better fit.
These approaches are not interchangeable: fixed deltas move by an amount, while element targeting aims at a destination.
Scroll down by a fixed amount
In Java, create an Actions sequence, apply a vertical wheel delta, and perform it:

}The first argument is the horizontal delta and the second is the vertical delta. A positive vertical delta scrolls down; a negative value scrolls up. Replace 500 with a distance appropriate for the page and test. The Selenium Java guide documents scrollByAmount as a convenience method.

Scroll a known element into view
If the test needs to reach a particular element, target it directly rather than repeating guessed scroll distances:

}Selenium’s guide says this brings the bottom of the element to the bottom of the screen, whether the element is currently above or below the viewport. This is useful when the destination is known; it does not replace a fixed delta when the test specifically needs to simulate incremental scrolling.
Scroll from an element or viewport origin
Origin-based scrolling is useful when the relevant scroll should begin at a point associated with an element, such as an iframe or nested scrollable area, or at a viewport coordinate. In Java, scrollFromOrigin accepts a WheelInput.ScrollOrigin and horizontal and vertical deltas:

}The Selenium guide also describes scrolling from an element, from an element with an offset, and from a viewport offset. Keep viewport offsets within the visible viewport: an offset outside it can cause an exception. For an element-origin example, use the target element as the origin instead of fromViewport, following the WheelInput.ScrollOrigin API for your installed Java binding.

Selenium’s executeScript runs JavaScript in the currently selected frame or window. For a document-bottom operation:

);These are browser JavaScript methods, not Selenium-specific scroll APIs. Ensure the driver is in the frame or window whose content should move. Some pages scroll a nested container rather than the document body, so identify the actual scrollable region when a document-level call appears to do nothing.
Browser and version considerations
- Selenium’s official wheel-actions page is labeled Chromium-only. That page does not establish identical wheel-action support for every browser or Selenium binding.
- The wheel input device was introduced in Selenium 4.2. If methods such as
scrollByAmountorscrollToElementare missing, verify the installed Selenium version and the API for your language binding. - The examples above use Java. Selenium has binding-specific APIs; consult the relevant official API documentation rather than assuming method names or availability match across languages.
- JavaScript execution uses the currently selected frame or window. Switch to the intended context before executing a scroll script.
Troubleshoot scrolling that does not work
The scroll method is unavailable
Check the Selenium dependency version and binding. Wheel actions were introduced in Selenium 4.2; older installations may not expose the documented methods. Upgrade to a supported version and confirm the method signature in that binding’s API reference.
The call runs but the page appears unchanged
Confirm the intended window or frame is selected. If the page uses a nested scroll container, a document-level scroll may not move it; target the appropriate element/origin or use the container’s DOM scrolling behavior.

An origin-based scroll throws an exception
Check the coordinates and offsets. An element-origin offset outside the viewport can fail. Keep viewport coordinates within the visible area and ensure the origin element is valid for the intended region.
More content does not appear after scrolling
Scrolling once does not guarantee that a page will load additional content. Infinite-scroll pages may need repeated scrolling and a wait for the newly loaded content before continuing. The page’s own loading behavior determines whether more content appears.
