Use .scrollIntoView() on a Cypress query that yields the element: cy.get('#footer').scrollIntoView(). To verify it afterward, query it again and assert visibility: cy.get('#footer').should('be.visible'). Cypress documents this as an element command—not cy.scrollIntoView(selector).
Scroll a specific element into view
Start with a selector for the target and chain .scrollIntoView() from the query:
cy.get('#footer').scrollIntoView()
cy.get('#footer').should('be.visible')
.scrollIntoView() needs a DOM-element subject and yields that same subject. Cypress marks it unsafe to chain further commands that rely on that subject after scrolling. A fresh query before an assertion avoids depending on the yielded subject.
Choose the right Cypress scrolling command
| Goal | Command | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Reveal a particular element | .scrollIntoView(), chained from a query that yields the element |
cy.get('#footer').scrollIntoView() |
| Move the window or page to a position | cy.scrollTo() |
cy.scrollTo('bottom') or cy.scrollTo(0, 500) |
| Move a scrollable container to a position | .scrollTo(), chained from the container |
cy.get('.sidebar').scrollTo('bottom') |
cy.scrollTo() supports named positions such as top, center, and bottom, as well as pixel or percentage coordinates. When it is chained to an element, that element must be scrollable. Set ensureScrollable: false to suppress the scrollability error when the element may or may not scroll. See the Cypress scrollTo() API reference for its options.

Set alignment and offset
.scrollIntoView() accepts these options:
| Option | Default | Use |
|---|---|---|
duration |
0 |
Set the scroll animation duration. |
easing |
swing |
Choose the scroll easing. |
log |
true |
Show or hide the command in the Cypress Command Log. |
offset |
{ top: 0, left: 0 } |
Adjust the scroll offset, for example when a fixed header could obscure the target. |
timeout |
defaultCommandTimeout |
Set the time allowed for the command. |
For example, an offset can leave room above a target beneath a fixed header:
cy.get('#nav').scrollIntoView({ offset: { top: 150, left: 0 } })
Check the Cypress scrollIntoView() API reference for the command’s current requirements and options.

Understand Cypress action scrolling
Cypress automatically scrolls an element into view before actionable commands such as clicking or typing. A query such as cy.get() or .find() by itself does not scroll. For an action, the scrollBehavior option controls alignment; supported values include 'top', 'bottom', 'start', 'end', 'center', 'nearest', per-axis { block, inline } values, or false to skip action scrolling. Cypress may keep scrolling to nudge a target clear of a fixed or sticky covering element.
For example, set alignment for a click with the action options:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →cy.get('#submit').click({ scrollBehavior: 'center' })
Use { force: true } cautiously. Forced actions skip scrolling, visibility checks, and other actionability checks, which can conceal a real problem with the page or test setup. Cypress documents per-axis scrollBehavior and the start/end action alignments as added in version 15.20.0. Its current interaction guide says Cypress 16’s default visibility algorithm delegates to the browser’s Element.checkVisibility() API. Confirm the version installed in your project before using version-specific options; see Cypress: Interacting with elements.

Assert visibility and debug scrolling
Scrolling is not itself a visibility assertion. Add a meaningful assertion after it, using a fresh query:
cy.get('#footer').scrollIntoView()
cy.get('#footer').should('be.visible')
Cypress runs scroll commands once; assertions added after .scrollIntoView() are retried until they pass or time out. However, snapshots in the Cypress Command Log do not accurately show element scroll positions. To observe movement, pause the sequence or inspect the test-run video.

Troubleshoot common problems
- The command is undefined or the chain fails: Use
cy.get(selector).scrollIntoView(), not a top-levelcy.scrollIntoView(selector). The command requires a DOM-element subject. - The next chained command behaves unexpectedly: Re-query the element before an assertion or another operation that depends on it; Cypress warns against relying on the subject yielded by
.scrollIntoView(). - The target is hidden beneath a fixed header: Try an
offseton.scrollIntoView(), or adjust the alignment for an actionable command withscrollBehavior. scrollTo()reports that an element is not scrollable: It must be chained from a scrollable container to move that container. If the element may or may not be scrollable,ensureScrollable: falsesuppresses that error.- The snapshot appears not to show the scroll: Cypress snapshots do not reflect accurate scroll positions. Pause during the command sequence or use the test-run video instead.
- A forced action passes despite an obscured target: Remove
force: truewhen the test should reflect normal user interaction; forced actions bypass scrolling and actionability checks. - An option is rejected by the installed version: Check the project’s Cypress version and the current API reference. Some action alignment options are version-specific.
