On an HP laptop or desktop running Windows, press Windows logo key + Shift + S. Choose Rectangular snip, drag over the area you want, and release. The capture is copied to the clipboard; click the Snipping Tool notification to edit and save it, or press Ctrl + V in Paint, Word, email, or another app.
Capture a selected area with Windows logo key + Shift + S
This is the most consistent way to capture part of the display because it is a Windows shortcut, not an HP-model-specific key.
- Open the webpage, application, document, or image you want to capture.
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S at the same time. The screen dims and the snipping toolbar appears.
- Select Rectangular snip if it is not already selected. This mode captures a box-shaped region.
- Place the pointer at one corner of the area, hold the mouse button or trackpad button, drag to the opposite corner, and release.
- The selected image is copied to the clipboard. Select the notification that appears to open it in Snipping Tool, or paste it immediately with Ctrl + V.
Choose another snip mode when appropriate
- Free-form snip: draw an irregular outline around the content.
- Window snip: select an individual open window.
- Full-screen snip: capture everything visible on the display.
For a precise portion of a page, rectangular mode is usually easiest. Leave a small margin when you need surrounding context; you can trim it later in the editor.
Open Snipping Tool instead of using the shortcut
Use the app when you need a delay, a different capture shape, or annotations before saving.

- Select Start, type Snipping Tool, and open the app.
- Select New.
- Choose the snip mode and, if available in your Windows build, a delay before capture.
- Drag around the required area.
- Use the editor to mark up the image, then select its save command and choose a folder, filename, and image format.
The shortcut and the app use the same Windows capture workflow. The shortcut is faster; the app exposes capture controls before you begin.
Where the screenshot goes and how to save it
Paste the clipboard image
A region captured with Windows logo key + Shift + S first goes to the clipboard. Open the destination and press Ctrl + V. Paint is useful when you want to save an ordinary image file: paste the snip, choose the save command, select a location, and pick an image format.
Open the notification
Select the Snipping Tool notification that appears after the drag. The editor lets you annotate and save the capture. If you dismiss the notification, the image may still remain available on the clipboard until another copy operation replaces it, so paste it promptly.
Save only the selected region
Do not use a full-screen shortcut and crop later unless you need the entire desktop for reference. Selecting the region during capture avoids exposing unrelated windows and produces a smaller file.

Print Screen and HP keyboard differences
The Print Screen key (labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, or similar) is primarily intended for full-screen capture. Windows documents Windows logo key + PrtScn as a full-screen shortcut on hardware that supports it. Some HP keyboards place the print-screen function on another key or make it a secondary function requiring Fn.
On supported devices without a clearly labeled Print Screen key, Windows lists Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as an alternative. Availability depends on the keyboard and device. These combinations are not substitutes for a selected-region capture: use Windows logo key + Shift + S when you need only part of the screen.

Improve accuracy and privacy
Make the selection easier to control
- Maximize or reposition the target window before opening the snipping toolbar.
- Start the drag just outside the first pixel you need, then adjust the opposite corner carefully.
- For tiny controls, increase Windows display scaling or zoom the application before capturing.
- Use window snip when the exact window boundary matters more than a custom rectangle.
Protect information in the frame
- Close or minimize windows containing passwords, messages, personal data, or customer details.
- Check the whole selection before sharing; notifications and browser tabs can be visible at the edges.
- Use Snipping Tool or an image editor to obscure sensitive text before sending the file.
Troubleshooting HP screenshot problems
Nothing happens after the key combination
Press and hold the Windows key and Shift, then tap S. Confirm that you are using the Windows logo key rather than Ctrl or Alt. If the toolbar still does not appear, select Start, search for Snipping Tool, and choose New. This bypasses a shortcut or keyboard issue.
The image disappeared
The snip is normally on the clipboard rather than automatically saved as a file. Open Paint, Word, an email, or another destination and press Ctrl + V. Alternatively, select the Snipping Tool notification and save from its editor.

Print Screen behaves differently after an update
Windows settings or updates can make Print Screen open Snipping Tool instead of producing a traditional full-screen capture. That behavior does not affect region capture. Use Windows logo key + Shift + S for a predictable selected-area workflow.
The HP keyboard has no obvious PrtScn key
Key labels vary by HP model, and the function may be printed on a secondary key. Use Snipping Tool from Start, or try the documented Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar alternative if your device supports it. You do not need a Print Screen key for the region shortcut.
The drag selects the wrong area
Release the mouse or trackpad button only after reaching the opposite corner. If the selection is wrong, press Esc before completing it and start again. For an open window, choose window snip rather than trying to trace its borders manually.
A delayed menu or tooltip is missing
Open Snipping Tool directly and configure its delay before selecting New. A delay gives a menu time to open while keeping the capture limited to the intended area.
