A full-page screenshot includes content beyond the part currently on screen.
The exact labels and availability can vary by browser version, device, and market. These steps capture the webpage area, not unrelated content elsewhere on your desktop.
What “only the active tab” means
People use “screenshot only the active browser tab” to mean different things. Usually, they want an image of the webpage currently open, without other windows or desktop content. Even then, there are two different capture sizes:
- Visible viewport: the portion of the webpage currently shown inside the browser tab. This is the right choice when you want the screenshot to match what is on screen.
- Full page: the webpage from top to bottom, including content below the fold. This is useful for documenting a long page, but it is not limited to what is currently visible.
A selected-area capture is a third option: you choose a rectangle yourself. In Edge, that lets you limit the result to the page viewport, provided you select the area accurately. Browser screenshot tools and labels can vary by version and device, so use the option that describes the capture you want rather than assuming every browser has a button with the same name.

Firefox: save the visible part of the page
Mozilla Support documents a built-in screenshot tool with separate choices for a visible area and a full page. Its instructions were last updated June 15, 2026.
- Open the page you want to capture in Firefox.
- Right-click an empty part of the page and select Take Screenshot. Alternatively, use Ctrl + Shift + S on Windows or Linux, or Command + Shift + S on macOS.
- Choose Save visible to capture what is currently shown in the page viewport.
- Follow the browser’s save or copy options to keep the image where you need it.
Firefox also offers a selected region, a page part highlighted automatically under the pointer, and Save full page. Those choices serve different purposes: use a region when you want a crop, the highlighted page part when you want a specific element, and full page when you need content below the fold. For a viewport-only screenshot, choose Save visible, not full page. Mozilla’s Firefox screenshot instructions describe the available capture types.
Microsoft Edge: select the page viewport
Microsoft documents Edge’s Screenshot feature as supporting a full-page capture or a selected area. To keep the capture to the visible webpage, use the selected-area option and select the page viewport. Edge’s documented shortcut path for a full-page capture is Ctrl + Shift + S, followed by Capture full page; that path captures the entire page, not just what is on screen.

- Open the webpage in Edge and invoke Screenshot. The exact way to open the feature can depend on your browser version and setup.
- Choose the selected-area option rather than the full-page option.
- Drag a selection around the webpage area you want. Keep the selection inside the page viewport if you do not want browser controls or other surrounding content in the image.
- Use the feature’s save or copy option to keep the capture.
Microsoft cautions that feature availability and functionality can vary by device type, market, and browser version. Its feature page does not establish that every Edge version has a distinct button named “visible area.” If the labels on your device differ, look for the selected-area capture and choose the webpage rectangle yourself. Chrome: what the documented option does—and does not—establish
The Chrome documentation covered here is for extension developers, not a universal end-user screenshot menu. Chrome’s tabCapture API can capture the currently active tab after an extension is invoked. The Tabs API describes extension permissions and restrictions. Those documents do not establish a built-in screenshot command or shortcut available to every Chrome user.
If you are using Chrome, check the screenshot features provided by your installed tools or extensions and confirm whether they capture the visible viewport or the entire page. Do not assume a Chrome keyboard shortcut or menu item based on Firefox or Edge instructions. For developers, the relevant references are Chrome’s tabCapture API and Tabs API; they describe extension capabilities, not a ready-made end-user workflow.

Choose the right capture size

If you are sending a screenshot as evidence of what you saw, the visible viewport is generally the closest match to the current screen. If the point is to preserve a long article or page for later reading, full-page capture may be more useful. Decide before capturing: switching between those modes changes what the image represents.
Check the result before sharing it
- Confirm the boundaries. Make sure the image includes the relevant page content and excludes anything you did not intend to share.
- Check whether it is viewport or full page. A very tall image may indicate that you captured the whole webpage rather than only the current view.
- Look for sensitive details. A screenshot can reveal account names, messages, personal information, or other content visible in the page. Crop or retake it if needed.
- Preserve context when it matters. If the recipient needs to know which page or state you captured, include that context in your message rather than changing the capture to include unrelated desktop content.
Troubleshooting browser captures
The result includes content below the fold
You likely chose the full-page option. Return to the screenshot controls and choose Firefox’s Save visible or Edge’s selected-area option, then capture only the page viewport.
The screenshot includes too much or too little
With a selected-area capture, the result follows the rectangle you selected. Retake it with the selection fitted to the page area you want. If your goal is exactly what is currently visible, use Firefox’s visible option where available instead of drawing a crop.

The shortcut does not open the tool
Shortcut support and feature availability can vary. In Firefox, use the documented right-click path—right-click an empty page area and choose Take Screenshot—or check the browser’s current help for your version. In Edge, invoke Screenshot using the controls available in your version. Do not assume that a shortcut documented for one browser will work in another.
You cannot find the same label shown in a guide
Browser interfaces change and can differ across devices or markets. Identify the capture extent in the controls—visible, selected area, or full page—rather than relying only on a label copied from another version. Microsoft specifically notes that Edge feature availability and functionality can vary.
You use Chrome and want a built-in command
The cited Chrome material describes extension APIs, not a universal end-user screenshot command. Check the tools installed in your browser and confirm their capture behavior; the API references alone are not instructions for taking a screenshot as a regular Chrome user.
