Use Playwright MCP to have an AI agent navigate to a news page and save a viewport, element, or full-page screenshot. First check the publisher’s terms: being able to capture a public page does not itself mean automated access, storage, or republication is permitted.
What you need
- An MCP-compatible AI client configured to use Playwright MCP.
- Node.js 20 or newer, listed in Playwright’s setup requirements.
- The specific article or page URL, plus a permitted reason and method for accessing it.
Playwright’s documented setup uses npx @playwright/mcp@latest; the configuration location varies by MCP client. Follow the setup instructions for your client in the Playwright MCP documentation.
Capture a news page with Playwright MCP
- Check the target publisher’s rules. Review its current terms and any official API, feed, widget, or embed documentation before asking an agent to automate access.
- Configure Playwright MCP. Add the Playwright MCP server to your MCP client using the client-specific configuration and satisfy the Node.js prerequisite.
- Navigate to the specific page. Ask the agent to open the URL. Use a fresh accessibility snapshot to inspect the page structure and locate controls; snapshots can become stale after navigation or page changes.
- Choose the capture scope. Ask the agent for the visible viewport, a particular element, or the full scrollable page, depending on what you need.
- Choose image format and scale. Select PNG, JPEG, or WebP and CSS-pixel or device-pixel scale. Save and use the result only within the permissions that apply.
For example, ask your agent: “Open [the article URL], inspect the current accessibility snapshot, then save a full-page WebP screenshot at device scale.” Replace the bracketed text with the actual URL. Use a viewport capture instead when you only need what is currently visible. The screenshot reference documents these options and notes that full-page mode cannot be combined with an element target: Playwright screenshots.
Choose between a screenshot and an accessibility snapshot

Check the publisher’s access and reuse terms
There is no single rule for every Indian news site. The terms reviewed for this guide illustrate meaningful differences, and they may change; check the current terms for the site you intend to access.
- Hindustan Times terms describe viewing and sharing for personal, non-commercial use, while restricting copying or republication beyond permitted service features and restricting bots, crawlers, and similar automated access.
- The Indian Express terms prohibit automated tools for accessing or extracting content and address storage, AI uses, and circumvention of protective measures.
- LiveMint terms restrict automated access and describe a personal, non-commercial viewing licence; they also point to separate conditions for APIs, feeds, widgets, and embeds.
These examples do not determine whether a particular capture for research, accessibility, reporting, or another purpose is allowed. The Government of India Copyright Office’s copyright handbook summarizes conditional fair-dealing exceptions including research, study, criticism, review, and news reporting; it is general background, not a site-specific legal ruling. Do not assume that a screenshot can be systematically copied, shared, used for training, or republished merely because a browser can render the page.

- The client does not show Playwright tools: Check that the MCP server configuration is valid for that client, then restart or reload the client as its documentation specifies.
- The page structure or references seem wrong: Take a fresh accessibility snapshot after navigation or any page change; earlier references can go stale.
- You need content below the fold: Request full-page mode rather than a viewport screenshot. Do not combine it with an element target.
- You need to interact with a control: Use the accessibility snapshot to find and act on it; a screenshot is a visual record, not a structured interaction surface.
- The publisher blocks or disallows automation: Stop rather than trying to bypass protective measures. Check for an authorized API, feed, widget, or embed and its separate conditions.
