Use Google Search Console’s branded-query filter to measure how your own site performs for brand searches, and save dated Google Search screenshots as visual records of what appeared in a particular search context. A screenshot is not a universal ranking report: Google says results can vary by time, place, device, and recent search history. Record those conditions and interpret snapshots alongside Search Console metrics.
Set up branded-query monitoring in Search Console

Open Google Search Console and select the verified property for the site you want to monitor.

Open the Search results Performance report.

Choose the query filter and select Branded. Google defines branded queries as searches that include a brand name, domain, or brand-specific product or service; the filter also includes common misspellings and variations. Its data begins on March 11, 2025. The filter is not available for sub-properties or for some sites with low impression volume. Google Search Console Help: Branded queries filter

Set the report’s date range to the period you want to review. Note the reporting period so you can compare it with later periods on the same basis.

The report provides clicks, impressions, click-through rate (CTR), and average position for your property. These are performance metrics, not a screenshot of the result page seen by a specific searcher. Average position aggregates search appearances; use its trend and methodology rather than treating a single value as a universal rank. Capture the Google results page
With the query you want to monitor, run a Google Search and capture the visible page using your browser or operating system’s screenshot function. Use a full-page capture if you need results below the visible viewport and your capture tool supports it. Browser controls vary by browser and version, so use the current instructions for the tool you choose rather than relying on a universal menu path.

- Capture date and time, including the time zone or time convention.
- Device and viewport, if known.
- Location or locale, if known.
- Whether you were signed in or the search may have been personalized, if known.
- The capture method and any relevant browser or operating-system details.
Google states that search results are specific to the time, place, device, and recent history of the person searching. These labels do not make results identical across people; they make the context of each snapshot clearer. Google: How Search works

Compare snapshots without mistaking them for rankings
When comparing images, keep the query, location, device, capture method, and time convention as consistent as practical. A changed result page may reflect a changed search context, not only a change in your site’s visibility.
Use Search Console to assess broader performance over matching date ranges: compare branded-query clicks, impressions, CTR, and average-position trends. Use the screenshots to inspect what a particular search page looked like at the recorded moment, not to replace the report’s aggregate data or infer what every user saw.

Use Google Search screenshots responsibly
Google’s Brand Resource Center says permission is not needed for screenshots of Google Search and search results pages used in print for educational or instructional purposes. That statement is limited to print educational or instructional uses; consult Google’s current guidance for other formats and uses. The guidance says to show Search naturally and positively, not to modify the interface or manufacture, remove, or alter suggestions or results. It also says Search should remain supplemental and the use should not imply endorsement or partnership. Third-party material shown in a result may require approval from its owner, particularly in promotional materials. Google asks that the tagline “Google and the Google logo are trademarks of Google LLC.” appear beneath an image featuring Google Search, and says advertisements featuring Search require Google’s approval.
