Use a real browser controlled by automation, then wait for the page element you need before capturing it. A navigation event alone may happen before a JavaScript-rendered pricing table, product card, or other component is visible. Playwright is one documented way to do this: navigate, wait for a meaningful locator, and capture the viewport, full page, or a selected element.
Why JavaScript pages produce blank or incomplete screenshots
Many pages render important content in the browser after the initial HTML arrives. A screenshot taken as soon as navigation begins—or even when a navigation milestone fires—can therefore miss content that a client-side script is still preparing. The reliable signal is the content you actually need: for example, a visible “Pricing” heading or the main product panel. Playwright recommends locator-based waits and web assertions for readiness rather than assuming a generic load event is enough (Page API, Locators guide).
Before automating a competitor site, check its applicable terms and access rules. Whether automated access or retaining and redistributing screenshots is permitted depends on the site and your use; the automation steps below do not establish permission.
Capture a JavaScript-rendered page with Playwright
1. Install Playwright
In a new project directory, install Playwright and its Chromium browser:

Save this as capture.js. Replace the example URL and locator with the target page and a stable element that indicates the content you want has appeared.

})();Run it with node capture.js. The example waits for the page’s “Pricing” heading after domcontentloaded; it is illustrative, not a tested capture of a competitor page. A site may not expose an accessible heading with that exact name, so adapt the locator to its current DOM. Playwright’s locator APIs find elements at the time of use and provide waiting behavior (Locators guide).

Choose the right capture area

Playwright documents page, full-page, and element screenshots in its Screenshots guide. A locator screenshot is especially useful when the comparison concerns one component rather than the entire page.
Make comparisons more consistent
For screenshots you plan to compare over time or between sites, hold the viewport and capture settings steady, and wait for the same kind of meaningful page state each run. Decide deliberately how to handle animation, rotating banners, and changing live data. Playwright exposes screenshot controls including scale, clipping, masks, and animation behavior, but those controls cannot make changing third-party content static (Page API).

For a long page, a full-page image may be difficult to inspect or compare; an element capture or a bounded viewport can be more practical. CSS-pixel and device-pixel scaling are available options in the screenshot API if image dimensions matter (Page API).

Why not wait for network idle?
Network quiet is not a universal indication that a page is ready. A page can keep making requests after the target content appears, or finish network activity before a particular component becomes visible. Playwright explicitly discourages networkidle as a testing-readiness signal and recommends web assertions instead; its definition is no network connections for at least 500 ms (Page API). Prefer waiting for the heading, content container, or other observable element that matters.
Troubleshoot failed or unreliable captures
- Blank or incomplete image: The screenshot may have been taken before client-side content rendered. Wait for a distinctive target element to become visible instead of relying only on a navigation milestone.
- The locator wait times out: Confirm the locator matches the live page, the target is not hidden behind a consent screen, and navigation did not fail. Inspect the DOM and choose a locator based on a role, text, label, or stable attribute.
networkidlenever completes or finishes too soon: Ongoing requests can make network idle unsuitable, and network silence does not prove your target component is present. Replace it with a page-specific locator wait.- The screenshot stops at the visible area: Set
fullPage: truefor a full scrollable-page capture, or use a locator screenshot for a particular region. - Images differ between runs: Keep viewport and target state consistent, then decide how to handle animations and rotating or live content. Screenshot settings can reduce some variance, but cannot freeze a site’s changing data.
- Browser installation or launch fails: Ensure the Playwright package and its browser engine are installed for the project; rerun
npx playwright install chromiumif Chromium is missing.

Can I capture only a pricing table instead of the whole page?
Yes. In Playwright, wait for a locator identifying the table and call that locator’s screenshot() method.
