To screenshot a competitor page at a 1440px viewport in Chrome, use DevTools’ Device Toolbar in Responsive mode, set the width to 1440, then choose More options > Capture screenshot for the visible area or More options > Capture a full size screenshot for the whole page. Chrome’s “Laptop L” preset is also 1440px wide. This sets a responsive viewport; it does not guarantee that the saved image’s bitmap width will be exactly 1440 pixels.
Set Chrome to a 1440px viewport
- Open the competitor’s page in Chrome.
- Open DevTools, then turn on Toggle device toolbar.
- In the device dimensions controls, choose Responsive. Enter 1440 in the width field. You can select Chrome’s 1440px-wide Laptop L preset instead.
- Set a height that frames the content you want to compare. Chrome lets you enter specific width and height values; there is no single required height for a 1440px capture.
- Wait for the page to settle into the state you want to document, then capture it.
This is Chrome’s responsive viewport emulation, not proof that the site was displayed on a physical 1440px monitor. For the documented controls, see Chrome for Developers’ Device Mode guide.
Choose viewport or full-page capture
Capture the visible viewport
In DevTools, open More options > Capture screenshot. This saves what is currently visible inside the emulated viewport. Use it when you want to compare the same above-the-fold region or a particular visible page state.
Capture the entire page
Choose More options > Capture a full size screenshot to include content beyond the current viewport. This is useful for reviewing a complete vertical layout. Keep the capture mode consistent across competitors: a viewport screenshot and a full-page screenshot do not show the same amount of page.

Make competitor screenshots comparable
For a fair visual comparison, use the same conditions for each page. Record the choices that affect framing or visible content:

- Viewport width and height
- Browser zoom
- Page state, including any open menus, dialogs, or other interactive elements
- Capture type: visible viewport or full page
- Capture date
These are practical consistency measures based on Chrome’s dimension and capture-mode controls, not an official testing standard. Name each file with the competitor or page, date, and viewport dimensions—for example, example-store-home-2026-10-04-1440×900-viewport.png.
What the 1440px setting does—and does not—mean
The 1440px value is the emulated viewport width. It does not, by itself, establish the saved file’s bitmap width. Device scale factor and zoom can affect the relationship between a viewport and the output image, so inspect the saved file if its pixel dimensions matter to your workflow.

Automating captures
Chrome’s DevTools Protocol includes a Page screenshot method and controls for overriding screen and viewport dimensions. That documentation is a starting point for automation; it is not a complete, tested script or end-to-end recipe. If you automate captures, verify the viewport, output dimensions, and screenshot mode in your own workflow.

Yes. Chrome’s Laptop L width preset is 1440px; Responsive mode also lets you enter the width directly.
Does a 1440px viewport always save a 1440-pixel-wide image?
No. The viewport setting alone does not establish the bitmap dimensions of the saved image. Inspect the file when exact output pixels are required.
