Open the website dropdown first, then capture the smallest scope that contains it: use a viewport screenshot for a normal open menu, an area or element capture for a tight crop, and a full-page capture only when surrounding page context matters. For menus that vanish on hover, delay the capture in Firefox or force :hover in Chrome DevTools.
Choose the right capture scope
A dropdown is part of the page state that is visible at the instant of capture. Open it before taking the screenshot, and make sure every menu item you need is inside the selected capture area.
| Goal | Best method | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Show the open menu and nearby content | Visible viewport | Preserves the current browser view without unrelated page sections. |
| Crop tightly around the menu | Area or element capture | Produces a focused image for documentation or bug reports. |
| Show where the menu belongs on a long page | Full-page capture | Includes content beyond the viewport, though the dropdown may not remain open if the page scrolls or rerenders. |
| Capture a menu that appears on hover | Delayed capture or forced hover state | Holds the transient state long enough to save it. |
These browser tools capture webpage content or a selected page node. A browser-toolbar menu outside the webpage is different: use your operating system’s window or screen-capture shortcut for that case.
Chrome: capture an open dropdown
Visible viewport
- Open the page and trigger the dropdown by clicking its button or hovering its trigger.
- Open DevTools with
F12orCtrl+Shift+I(Windows/Linux), orCmd+Option+I(macOS). - Enable Device Mode with the phone/tablet icon if it is not already active.
- In the Device Mode toolbar, open More options and choose Capture screenshot. Chrome saves the currently visible viewport as an image. The command is documented in Chrome Device Mode.
Keep the dropdown open while opening the menu. If opening DevTools changes the responsive layout, choose an appropriate device or drag the viewport to the dimensions you need before capturing.

Full-page context
- Open the dropdown.
- In Device Mode, select More options > Capture a full size screenshot.
Use this when readers must see the menu in relation to the whole document. Full-size capture includes content outside the current viewport; it is not the best choice for a compact menu-only image.
Capture a selected region
- Leave DevTools docked to the browser window. Chrome’s area workflow does not work when DevTools is undocked.
- Open the Command Menu with
Ctrl+Shift+P(Windows/Linux) orCmd+Shift+P(macOS). - Type
screenshot. - Choose Capture area screenshot, then drag around the open dropdown. Press
Escto cancel and repeat if the crop is wrong.
See the Chrome Command Menu documentation for the command location and keyboard shortcuts.
Capture the dropdown’s DOM node
- Open the dropdown, then switch to the Elements panel.
- Use the element picker or inspect the menu node. Common nodes have roles such as
menuorlistbox, but the actual markup varies by site. - Right-click the node and choose Capture node screenshot.
This captures the selected node and its descendants rather than an arbitrary rectangle. It requires a menu element that Chrome can identify and may not reproduce state that is controlled only by unusual scripts or overlays.
Hold a hover menu open
- Inspect the element that opens the menu.
- Right-click it and choose Force State > :hover.
- With the forced state applied, use viewport, area, full-size, or node capture.
Chrome documents forced pseudo-classes in its DOM and CSS inspection guide. Remove the forced state afterward so normal interaction returns.
Firefox: built-in screenshot controls
Visible, region, and full-page captures
- Open the dropdown.
- Right-click an empty part of the webpage and select Take Screenshot, or press
Ctrl+Shift+S(Windows/Linux) orCmd+Shift+S(macOS). - Choose Save visible for the current viewport, drag a region for a custom crop, select an automatically highlighted page part, or choose Save full page for the entire document.
- Download the image or copy it to the clipboard.
Firefox’s choices and keyboard shortcuts are listed in Mozilla’s screenshot help. For a menu screenshot, the visible or dragged-region options usually avoid including unnecessary page content.

Capture a specific element
- Open DevTools and select the Inspector.
- Right-click the dropdown node.
- Choose Screenshot Node.
If the command is not visible, use Firefox’s DevTools settings to enable the screenshot toolbox button: open Settings > Available Toolbox Buttons and enable Take a screenshot of the entire page. The Firefox DevTools screenshot documentation describes node and full-page options.
Delay a transient dropdown
Firefox’s Web Console includes a :screenshot helper. Open the menu through the page’s normal interaction, then run:
:screenshot --delay 2 --filename dropdown.png
The command waits two seconds before capturing. Increase or decrease the delay to match the time needed to open the menu. Other documented options include --dpr for pixel density, --fullpage for a full document, and --selector to limit the image to one element and its descendants:

Hover-triggered menus
Use Chrome’s Force State > :hover when the menu is represented by a CSS hover state. In Firefox, use :screenshot --delay when opening the menu requires a movement or another action before capture. If JavaScript closes the menu when the pointer leaves, keep the pointer over the trigger or menu while preparing the capture.
Menus clipped by the viewport
Scroll just enough to place the complete menu onscreen, or use a full-page capture if the page layout requires it. A full-page image can include the menu’s location but may not preserve a menu that depends on the current viewport; a node or area capture is safer for a menu-only record.

Menus behind overlays
Dismiss cookie notices, chat bubbles, and other overlays when they cover the dropdown. If you are documenting the overlay itself, capture it deliberately and label the image so viewers know it is part of the page state.
Quality and reproducibility checklist
- Open the exact dropdown state you intend to document, including any selected or expanded item.
- Use a consistent browser zoom and viewport size when comparing screenshots.
- Wait for fonts, icons, and lazy-loaded menu content to finish rendering.
- Choose PNG for sharp text and UI edges; use JPEG when a smaller photographic file is more important.
- Check the image for clipped shadows, missing scrollable items, and focus outlines before sharing it.
- Record the URL, browser, viewport dimensions, and interaction used to open the menu when the screenshot is evidence for a bug.
- Remove passwords, personal data, access tokens, and private customer information before publishing or attaching the file to a ticket.
Troubleshooting
The menu disappears before capture
For Chrome, force :hover on the trigger or menu node. For Firefox, add a delay to :screenshot. For a click menu, reopen it after DevTools is positioned and capture immediately.
Capture area is unavailable in Chrome
Dock DevTools to the browser window. Chrome documents that area capture does not work while DevTools is undocked.

The screenshot is blank or missing the menu
Confirm that the menu is open in the same tab and frame you are capturing. Wait for the page to finish loading, disable an extension that may alter the UI, and try a node or viewport capture instead of a full-page capture.

The full-page image does not show the open state
Full-page capture can scroll or reconstruct the document. Use a visible viewport, area, or node screenshot when preserving the exact open state is more important than page context.
The wrong element is captured
Inspect the menu node rather than its trigger. Check for nested wrappers, portals, or shadow-root content; the visible menu may be rendered elsewhere in the DOM. A manually dragged region is a practical fallback.
Firefox replaced an earlier file
Run the command again with a new value for --filename; repeated filenames overwrite existing captures.
Or skip the browser setup

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I screenshot a native HTML select menu?
Usually not with webpage DevTools tools: the expanded native control may be drawn by the operating system rather than the page DOM. Capture the surrounding page state, or use the operating system’s screen capture while the native menu is open.
How do I capture a dropdown for a bug report without exposing private data?
Use a region or node capture, then inspect the image for names, account details, tokens, and customer records. Crop or redact sensitive values before attaching it.
Should I use a viewport or full-page screenshot for documentation?
Use a viewport or element image when the dropdown interaction is the subject. Choose full page only when readers need the menu’s position within the complete document.
