For a site and account you’re authorized to access, use Playwright to submit the login form, wait for a reliable sign-in indicator, then capture the protected page with page.screenshot(). Save the authenticated browser context’s storage state if you want later runs to reuse the session instead of logging in again; protect that file like a password because it can contain session credentials.
Install Playwright and its browser
Install Playwright in the Python environment used by your project, then install the browser binaries. The commands below use the Python package’s CLI:

This example uses Playwright’s synchronous Python API throughout. Do not mix synchronous calls with the asynchronous API in the same flow. Playwright documents both styles in its screenshot guide.
Log in, verify access, and capture the page
Replace the example URL and form labels with those used by the site. The selectors and post-login text below are illustrative; they are not verified against a real website. Use a stable, site-specific indicator that appears only after successful authentication.

browser.close()Playwright’s get_by_label() and get_by_role() locators target controls by the labels and roles users encounter. Locator actions wait and retry where appropriate, which is generally more resilient than selecting elements by fragile CSS paths. See the locator guide.
Save and reuse login state safely
context.storage_state(path=...) saves the browser context’s authentication-related state. Passing that file to a later browser.new_context(storage_state=...) restores the saved state, when the application’s authentication mechanism is covered by it. Playwright describes saving and reusing state in its authentication guide and Browser documentation.
- Keep it private: the file may contain cookies or other data that can impersonate the signed-in account. Do not commit it, include it in logs, or share it as an ordinary artifact. Exclude the auth directory from version control and restrict file access.
- Expect expiration: a site can expire or revoke a session. If the protected page redirects to login, verify the state is current and regenerate it through the permitted login flow.
- Check what the application stores: storage state can cover cookies, local storage, and—when configured—IndexedDB, but session storage and some authentication designs need additional handling. Playwright’s BrowserContext API documents the available state options; check your installed version before relying on IndexedDB inclusion.
- Use appropriate accounts: prefer a dedicated test account where possible, and follow the site’s approved authentication process.
Playwright’s API-testing documentation describes a supported route for applications that legitimately expose an API login flow; browser-context and API-request storage state can be used together in appropriate cases. It is not a way to bypass a site’s access controls. See API testing and APIRequestContext.

For element captures, the Locator API also documents masking matched regions and disabling animations. A mask covers matching element bounding boxes, so choose selectors carefully. A screenshot call can also return image bytes rather than writing to a path; that can be useful when another step consumes the image directly. See Screenshots.
Screenshot format support depends on the installed Playwright version. The release notes mention WebP screenshots in Playwright 1.62; check the release notes and your installed version before depending on that format.
Common problems and fixes
The screenshot is still the login page
- Wait for a real signed-in signal after submitting the form; a completed click alone does not prove that authentication succeeded.
- Confirm that the state file was saved only after successful login and loaded when creating the context.
- Check whether the application uses session storage, IndexedDB, passkeys, or another mechanism that requires separate handling.
- Confirm that the saved session has not expired or been revoked and that it is valid for the target site.
A locator cannot find the username, password, or submit button
Inspect the page’s accessible labels and roles, then use the actual label and button name in get_by_label() and get_by_role(). If the form is inside a frame or appears only after another interaction, address that site-specific structure before filling the fields.

The flow pauses at MFA, CAPTCHA, or federated sign-in
The generic form example cannot determine the correct flow for a particular site. Use its permitted authentication route and do not assume cookies or direct API calls can bypass access controls.
The page is captured before its important content appears
Wait for a stable, page-specific element that signals the content is ready before taking the screenshot. The login indicator confirms access; it may not confirm that every later-loaded section or image has finished rendering.

The saved state does not work on a later run
Regenerate it after a successful login, ensure the file is loaded into the new context before opening the protected page, and check the application’s storage mechanism. Storage state is a snapshot, not a guarantee that a site will keep a session valid indefinitely.
