Use a real browser engine, not PHP’s image functions, to capture a webpage as a PNG. The most direct local options are Spatie Browsershot (Puppeteer plus headless Chrome) and chrome-php/chrome (PHP control of Chrome). A hosted API such as ScreenshotOne avoids installing and operating Chrome. All three render HTML, CSS and JavaScript before producing PNG bytes.

Option 1: Browsershot with Puppeteer and Chrome
Browsershot converts webpages to images or PDFs by having Puppeteer control headless Google Chrome. PNG is its documented default image type. It can also accept HTML directly.
Install and prepare the runtime
Install the PHP package with Composer, then install the Node.js dependencies and a compatible Chrome/Chromium runtime according to the current Browsershot and Puppeteer documentation. Keep the versions aligned in production; a PHP package upgrade can require a newer Puppeteer or browser executable.

Apply options only when the page needs them. Each extra wait or larger viewport increases work.

- Device scale: increase pixel density for retina-style output.
- Full page: include content below the initial viewport; lazy-loaded images may need additional waiting.
- Delay: allow a known animation or client-side render to finish.
- Selector/resource waits: capture only after a specific element appears or network activity settles.
- Device emulation: use documented mobile/device presets when responsive breakpoints matter.
- Background handling and custom page input: configure these when transparent or HTML-generated output is required.

Option 2: Control Chrome directly with chrome-php/chrome
chrome-php/chrome exposes browser operations from PHP. Its documented screenshot format is PNG by default, with JPEG and WebP alternatives, and it demonstrates full-page capture using the page’s full-page clip.

Production checklist
- Pin PHP, package, Puppeteer and Chrome versions and verify compatibility after upgrades.
- Set explicit navigation, selector and overall process timeouts; never let a stuck page consume a worker indefinitely.
- Use a queue for large batches so web requests do not wait on browser startup and rendering.
- Reuse a controlled browser where the library supports it, but isolate jobs that can leak cookies, memory or pages.
- Close pages and browsers in a
finallyblock. - Give the browser enough shared memory in containers and monitor memory for very tall full-page captures.
- Store credentials outside source control and sanitize target URLs.
- Record the target, viewport, waits, browser/package versions and failure reason for reproducibility.
- Cache deterministic captures when freshness permits; invalidate after content or style changes.
Troubleshooting
Chrome executable not found
Install Chrome/Chromium and configure the package’s executable path. Confirm the PHP worker user can execute it; a shell that works for your login may differ from PHP-FPM.

Navigation times out
Check DNS, TLS, firewall and the target’s bot protection. Increase a narrowly scoped timeout only after confirming the page is reachable. Wait for a selector rather than indefinite network-idle on pages with analytics polling.

PNG is blank or missing content
The page may require JavaScript, a later API response, consent interaction or scrolling to trigger lazy loading. Add a documented selector/delay wait, emulate the expected viewport, or use full-page capture where appropriate.
Fonts or images differ
Ensure assets are publicly reachable from the browser, use absolute URLs, wait for fonts and images, and compare the same device scale and viewport. Cross-origin restrictions and authenticated assets may require browser headers or cookies.
Full-page output is enormous
Capture a bounded viewport, target a specific element, or split long documents. Remove infinite-scroll behavior and avoid unbounded waits.

Run Chrome under the intended non-root user, provide the required sandbox support, and follow the library’s container guidance rather than blindly disabling security controls.
Hosted API response is not an image
Inspect the HTTP status and response headers before writing bytes. Log the provider’s error body separately, verify the access key, encode the URL, and check the requested format and plan limits.

Can PHP’s GD or Imagick screenshot a live webpage?
Not by themselves. They manipulate image data; a browser engine must first render the webpage and execute its CSS and JavaScript.
Should I capture the viewport or the full page?
Use a viewport for a predictable screen-sized image. Use full-page mode for documents and pages where content below the fold must be included, while guarding against infinite scroll and very tall output.
Why does a screenshot differ between local and production?
Browser version, fonts, viewport, device scale, timezone, network access, cookies and authentication state can all change rendering. Pin versions and record these settings.
Is a hosted screenshot service always faster?
The supplied documentation does not provide neutral speed measurements. Compare end-to-end latency for your URLs, including browser startup, network distance and any waits.
