To save a webpage as a PNG, capture the browser-rendered page rather than the HTML source. For a one-off image, Firefox’s Web Console has a built-in :screenshot command. For repeatable captures, Playwright can save a viewport, full page, or selected element to a PNG file or buffer. Choose --fullpage (Firefox) or fullPage: true (Playwright) when content below the fold must be included.
Viewport, full-page, and element screenshots
A viewport screenshot contains only the pixels currently visible in the browser window. A full-page screenshot extends below the fold and captures the document’s scrollable content. An element screenshot is cropped to one selected element and its descendants, such as a chart, product card, or article body.
- Viewport: fastest for documenting what a user sees at a specific window size.
- Full page: use for complete articles, landing pages, and archive records.
- Element: use a CSS selector or locator when the whole page would add irrelevant material.
PNG is a lossless choice when exact pixels matter, including visual regression tests and annotated documentation. The sources used here do not establish compression or file-size comparisons with JPEG or WebP.
Save a webpage as PNG in Firefox
Firefox’s Developer Tools Web Console provides a :screenshot helper. Mozilla documents the command and its options in Taking screenshots.

Before you start
- Use a current desktop Firefox window with the page loaded.
- Open Developer Tools with
F12orCtrl+Shift+Ion Windows/Linux, orCmd+Option+Ion macOS. - Select the Console tab. If Firefox warns about pasting code, type the requested phrase manually; do not paste untrusted scripts.
- Scroll to the desired position for a viewport capture. The command can also capture the full document independently of the current scroll position.
Capture the visible viewport
- In the Web Console, run
:screenshot --filename=page.png. - Firefox saves the PNG using that name (normally in the browser’s download location).
Use a unique filename for each capture. Mozilla states that saving to an existing filename overwrites it.
Capture the entire page
:screenshot --fullpage --filename=page-full.png--fullpage includes content outside the current window bounds, including material below the fold.
Capture one element
:screenshot --selector="main article" --filename=article.pngReplace main article with the element’s CSS selector. The selected element and its descendants are included. If the selector matches nothing, inspect the page and correct the selector before retrying.
Wait or change pixel density
Dynamic interfaces sometimes need time to settle. Add a delay in milliseconds:
:screenshot --delay=2000 --filename=menu-open.pngUse --dpr to change device-pixel ratio. Mozilla describes a higher DPR as producing a more zoomed-in result and a lower DPR as more zoomed-out. For a repeatable series, keep the same window size, browser zoom, DPR, fonts, and page state.

Automate PNG screenshots with Playwright
Playwright supports page, element, full-page, path-based, and buffer-based screenshots. The official examples are in Playwright’s screenshots documentation; method details are in the Page API.
Install and create a minimal script

Capture a buffer instead of a file

Make dynamic pages deterministic
- Use
page.goto()with an appropriate wait condition, then wait for a known selector when application rendering is asynchronous. - Set a fixed viewport and device scale factor.
- Dismiss consent dialogs or close overlays before capture when they are part of the page state you do not want.
- For menus or hover states, trigger the interaction and wait briefly before calling
screenshot().

For visual comparisons, keep the capture environment consistent. Playwright notes that screenshots can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Its visual comparisons guide recommends stable environments for useful baselines.
Practical capture checklist
- Decide whether the image is viewport, full page, or one element.
- Set the browser window or Playwright viewport explicitly.
- Wait for fonts, images, and application content to finish loading.
- Remove or handle consent banners, chat widgets, and transient overlays if they obscure the target.
- Choose a unique PNG filename and verify the output dimensions.
- For a test baseline, run on the same browser and operating-system configuration each time.
Troubleshooting PNG captures
The image stops at the fold
You made a viewport capture. In Firefox rerun with --fullpage; in Playwright set fullPage: true.
The selector capture is blank or fails
Check that the selector matches a visible element after the page has rendered. In Playwright, wait for the locator; in Firefox, inspect the DOM and copy a valid CSS selector. If the element is inside an iframe, target the frame rather than the top-level document.
Images or lazy content are missing
Wait for the application’s loading state or a specific content selector. A network-idle condition alone may not mean that JavaScript has finished rendering. Capture again after the page visibly settles.
A menu or popup is not present
Open or hover the control first, then use Firefox’s --delay or wait in Playwright before taking the screenshot. Ensure the menu is not dismissed by a click elsewhere.

Repeated captures do not match
Stabilize viewport, DPR, browser version, operating system, fonts, headless mode, power conditions, and page data. Disable animations where your application permits, and wait for dynamic content before capture.

The file was replaced unexpectedly
Firefox overwrites an existing filename. Generate unique names, such as page-2026-09-29.png, when keeping a series.
Playwright cannot launch a browser
Run npx playwright install after installing the package, and verify that the process has permission to access the browser cache and output directory.
