Take a screenshot of an element with a locator
After navigating to the page, select the element and call screenshot():
await page.locator('.header').screenshot({ path: 'header.png' });Playwright scrolls the element into view and performs actionability checks before capturing it. The screenshot is clipped to the element’s bounds. If the element becomes detached from the DOM, the call throws an error. These behaviors are documented in the Playwright Locator API.
Complete runnable example
This JavaScript example uses Playwright’s library API. Install the package and browser first with npm install playwright and npx playwright install chromium, then save the code as element-shot.js and run node element-shot.js.

})();Replace h1 with a selector that identifies the element you want on the page. For a site you control, a stable CSS class or test-specific attribute is often easier to maintain than a selector tied to incidental markup.
Choose a locator that identifies the intended element
Use a locator that is specific enough to match the element you mean. CSS works well when the page has a stable class or attribute:

await page.getByRole('link', { name: 'Learn more' }).screenshot({ path: 'learn-more.png' });If a locator matches multiple elements, make it more specific or select the intended match explicitly. A locator that resolves to an ambiguous target cannot reliably tell Playwright which element to capture.
Save the file or use the returned image buffer
When you provide path, Playwright writes the screenshot to that file; it infers the image type from the filename extension. Without path, screenshot() returns a buffer, which you can store, upload, or process in your code.

The Locator API supports screenshot options that are useful for repeatable captures or specific output needs. Confirm the defaults and supported options against the documentation for your installed Playwright version and language binding.

For example, disable animation when it would make a visual capture inconsistent:

});Use style when the page contains changing elements that interfere with a capture. Keep in mind that it changes the rendered page for the screenshot, so use rules that preserve the appearance you intend to test or document.
Understand what the element screenshot includes
- Only the element’s bounds: The image is clipped to the matched element, not the full page.
- Overlapping content stays on top: An element covering the target remains visible in the output; the screenshot does not reveal content hidden beneath it.
- Scrollable content is not expanded: For a scrollable element, the capture shows the portion currently scrolled into view, not every item in its scroll area.
- The target must remain attached: If the element is detached before the capture, Playwright throws rather than producing an image.

Use the locator API instead of ElementHandle screenshots
Prefer locator.screenshot() for new code. Playwright marks ElementHandle.screenshot() as discouraged and recommends locator-based screenshots instead. See the screenshots guide and the ElementHandle API.
Troubleshoot common problems
The screenshot call throws because the element is detached
The page may have replaced or removed the target between locating it and capturing it. Wait for the intended element to appear, then capture it through a locator so Playwright can resolve it at call time. If the page is still updating the target, identify a stable element or wait for the relevant page state before taking the screenshot.
The output shows only part of a scrollable element
That is the expected element-screenshot behavior: it captures the element’s visible, currently scrolled content rather than expanding the capture to all of the element’s scroll area. Scroll the element to the portion you need before capture, or use a different capture strategy if you need its full contents.

Another element covers the target
Playwright preserves the rendered overlap. If a banner or other element obscures the target, handle that page state before capture or use the screenshot style option to hide the obstructing element when that is appropriate for your use case.
Repeated captures differ because of animation
Set animations: 'disabled' to stop animations for the capture. Remember that finite animations are fast-forwarded and infinite animations are canceled to their initial state temporarily, so this setting can affect page behavior as well as the image.
The image is larger or smaller than expected
Check scale. device uses device pixels, while css produces one pixel per CSS pixel. Also check whether the output type comes from the filename extension or the explicit type option.
