To screenshot only one application window, click that window and press Alt+Print Screen (also labeled Alt+PrtScn or Alt+PrntScrn). Windows copies the active window to the clipboard; press Ctrl+V in Paint, an email, or another app to use it. For a selectable window capture with editing and save controls, press Windows logo key+Shift+S, choose Window, and select the window.
Choose the right single-window method
Windows provides two practical ways to capture one window. Use the keyboard shortcut when the correct window is already focused. Use Snipping Tool’s Window mode when you want to pick a window from an on-screen preview, annotate it, or save it from the capture interface.
| Method | Best for | Where the image goes | Editing and saving |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alt+Print Screen | The window that is currently active | Clipboard only | Paste into another application, then save there |
| Windows+Shift+S, Window mode | Selecting a particular visible window | Snipping Tool capture result (and clipboard) | Annotate, crop, copy, or save in Snipping Tool |
| Office Screenshot gallery | Inserting an open window directly into Word, Excel, Outlook, or PowerPoint | The selected Office document | Use Office’s normal picture tools |
Microsoft documents these workflows for Windows 10 and Windows 11 in its Snipping Tool guide and active-window instructions.
Method 1: capture the active window with Alt+Print Screen
- Click the application window you want. Its title bar or border should indicate that it has focus.
- Press Alt+Print Screen. Depending on the keyboard, the key may say PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn.
- Open Paint, a document, an email composer, or another image-capable application.
- Press Ctrl+V to paste the capture.
- Save or send the pasted image using that application’s normal controls.
This shortcut copies the active window; it does not create a file by itself. The image remains available through the clipboard until another clipboard operation replaces it. Microsoft describes the active-window behavior and key-label variations in its copy-window support page.

- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
If your keyboard combines Print Screen with another key
Some laptop keyboards place Print Screen on a shared key or require an Fn modifier. Look for PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn printed on a key and use the hardware’s documented Fn combination if pressing Alt+Print Screen alone does nothing. The exact combination differs by manufacturer, so Windows’ general shortcut documentation cannot guarantee one laptop-specific sequence.
Method 2: select a window in Snipping Tool
- Press Windows logo key+Shift+S. Windows opens the screen-snipping overlay.
- On the toolbar, choose Window. Snipping Tool also offers rectangular, freeform, and full-screen modes.
- Move over the target application and select its window.
- Open the resulting capture in Snipping Tool. Use the available annotation or crop tools if needed.
- Choose the Save control or press Ctrl+S, then select a folder and image format when prompted.
The capture is also copied so you can paste it elsewhere. If the overlay does not show Window mode, open Snipping Tool from the Start menu and choose the snipping mode there. Microsoft notes that labels and interface details can vary with Windows updates and settings; the documented shortcut is covered in the current Snipping Tool guidance.
Useful Snipping Tool controls
- Alt+N: starts a new snip using the last-used mode.
- Ctrl+C: copies the current capture.
- Ctrl+S: saves the current capture.
Window mode captures a complete application window rather than a manually drawn rectangle. If you need only part of that window, capture it first and then crop in Snipping Tool or your image editor.

| Windows logo key+Print Screen | Full-screen capture saved automatically | PicturesScreenshots |

Microsoft lists the full-screen destinations and overlay behavior in its Windows keyboard-shortcut reference.
Insert an open window directly into an Office document
If the final destination is Word, Excel, Outlook, or PowerPoint, you can avoid the intermediate clipboard step. Open the desktop Office app, place the cursor where the image should go, and open the Insert tab. Choose Screenshot, then select the desired open window from the gallery. Office inserts the window image into the document. Microsoft states that minimized windows are not available in this gallery; restore the application before opening Insert > Screenshot. See the Office screenshot instructions for the current desktop-app workflow.
Troubleshooting a single-window capture
The wrong window was captured
Alt+Print Screen follows focus, not the window you last intended to use. Click the target window immediately before pressing the shortcut. With Snipping Tool, use Window mode and click the correct preview instead of relying on focus.
Nothing appears after pressing Alt+Print Screen
- Paste with Ctrl+V in Paint or another application; the shortcut does not save a file automatically.
- Check whether your keyboard requires Fn for its Print Screen key.
- Confirm that you pressed Alt, not the Windows logo key. Windows+Print Screen takes a full-screen file capture instead.
Window mode is missing
Launch Snipping Tool from Start and inspect its mode selector. If the toolbar opened in another mode, switch to Window before selecting the application. Microsoft supports Windows 10 and Windows 11, but the arrangement of controls can change between updates.

The capture was not saved
An Alt+Print Screen capture exists only on the clipboard until you paste it into an application and save from there. For Snipping Tool, select the capture result and use Ctrl+S or the Save control. If another copy or cut operation occurred first, repeat the capture.
The application is minimized
Restore the application before selecting it. A minimized window cannot be selected in Office’s Screenshot gallery, and a window must be visible for Snipping Tool’s Window mode to identify it reliably.
You are using Windows 10 after its support date
Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. That date is a support-status change, not a statement that screenshot shortcuts stopped functioning. The procedures above remain the documented Windows workflows, but unsupported systems no longer receive normal security and feature support. The date is listed in Microsoft’s Windows support information.
Quality, privacy, and workflow checks
- Close or minimize unrelated windows before a capture if the image may contain confidential information.
- Review the pasted image at 100% size for account names, notifications, or private data before sharing it.
- Use Alt+Print Screen when speed matters and the target is already active; use Window mode when explicit selection and annotation matter.
- Remember that neither shortcut captures a web page’s hidden, off-screen content as a full document. They capture what is rendered in the selected window at that moment.
Or skip the browser setup:
If what you really need is an automated screenshot of a web page rather than a local Windows desktop window, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It is not a replacement for Alt+Print Screen when you need an image of a desktop application; it is useful when code or an AI agent should capture a URL repeatedly.
