To capture only one window in Windows 11, press Windows logo key + Shift + S, choose Window on the Snipping Tool toolbar, and click the window. If the window is already active, Alt + Print Screen copies that window directly to the clipboard; paste it with Ctrl + V.
Use Window mode when you want to select a visible window and edit or save the result. Use Alt + Print Screen when the correct window is focused and you need a quick copy.
Choose the right single-window method
| Method | How you select the window | Where the capture goes | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Snipping Tool Window mode | Select a window from the capture overlay | Clipboard and Snipping Tool editor; current Windows guidance also says captured snips are automatically saved in the Screenshots folder | You want explicit selection, annotation, cropping, sharing or a Save as command |
| Alt + Print Screen | The currently active window is captured | Clipboard; paste into another application | The desired window is already focused and you need the fastest copy |
Microsoft defines the active window as the one you are currently working in; only one window can be active at a time. That distinction matters: Alt + Print Screen does not let you pick a different window after pressing the keys.
Method 1: Capture a selected window with Snipping Tool
- Arrange the target window so it is visible.
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. A Snipping Tool capture toolbar appears.
- Choose Window mode on the toolbar.
- Click the window you want to capture.
- Use the notification or Snipping Tool editor to annotate, crop, copy, save or share the image.
Window mode captures immediately after you select a window rather than asking you to drag around it. This avoids accidentally including neighboring applications or the desktop.

Save, edit or share the result
The capture is available through the Snipping Tool workflow and clipboard. The current Windows support guidance says a captured snip is automatically saved to the Screenshots folder and that the editor includes Save as for choosing another location or filename. You can also copy the image from the editor and paste it into an email, document or image editor.
If you do not see the notification, press the Windows key and type Snipping Tool to open the app, then check its recent capture workflow. The keyboard shortcut remains the quickest way to start a new window capture.
Method 2: Capture the active window with Alt + Print Screen
- Click the window you want so it becomes active.
- Press Alt + Print Screen.
- Open Paint, Word, an email, chat or another destination app.
- Press Ctrl + V to paste the image.
- Save the pasted image from that destination app.
This method copies only the active window, not the entire desktop. It does not open the Snipping Tool editor, so cropping, annotation and file naming happen in whichever app you use for the paste.
What “active” means
The active window is the one receiving your keyboard and mouse input. Click its title bar or content area immediately before pressing the shortcut if you are unsure. If another application has focus, Alt + Print Screen will copy that other application instead.

Where Windows 11 saves a window screenshot
Snipping Tool captures
Microsoft’s current Windows guidance says captured snips are automatically saved in the Screenshots folder. You can also use Save as in the Snipping Tool editor to select a different folder, filename or image format supported by the editor.
Alt + Print Screen captures
Alt + Print Screen places the image on the clipboard. It is not a file until you paste it into an application and save it there. If you close the destination app without saving, the clipboard copy may be lost when it is replaced by another copy operation.
Do not confuse these shortcuts with full-screen capture
Windows logo key + PrtScn captures the screen rather than just the active window and uses the Pictures > Screenshots location described in Microsoft’s keyboard-shortcut guidance. For one window, use Window mode or Alt + Print Screen instead.
If your keyboard has no Print Screen key
Some laptops omit a dedicated PrtScn key or place it behind a function layer. Microsoft says some hardware uses Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar when there is no PrtScn button. Keyboard layouts vary, so look for a key labeled PrtSc, PrtScn or a secondary print-screen symbol.

You do not need a Print Screen key at all: press Windows + Shift + S, select Window, and click the target window. A USB keyboard with a Print Screen key is an optional convenience, not a requirement.
Common problems and fixes
The whole screen was captured
You probably used a full-screen shortcut or selected Rectangular, Freeform or Full-screen mode in the Snipping Tool toolbar. Start again with Windows + Shift + S, explicitly choose Window, then click the application window.
Alt + Print Screen captured the wrong application
The wrong window was active when the keys were pressed. Click the target window first, wait for it to receive focus, and press Alt + Print Screen again. Paste into a destination with Ctrl + V to verify the new capture.
Nothing appears after pressing the shortcut
For Snipping Tool, check that you pressed the Windows logo key, Shift and S together and that the capture toolbar is visible. For Print Screen, your keyboard may require the Fn combination described above, or it may not provide the key. Use Window mode as the key-free alternative.

The screenshot is not in the folder I expected
Snipping Tool captures can be opened in the editor and redirected with Save as. Alt + Print Screen does not create a file by itself; paste it into Paint, Word or another app and save from there. Also check that you are looking in the Screenshots folder associated with your Windows user account.
The capture needs markup or a crop
Use Snipping Tool Window mode so the result opens in its editor, where you can annotate, crop, copy, save and share. With Alt + Print Screen, paste into an editor that provides those tools.
A shortcut behaves differently on a compact laptop
Function layers and regional keyboard layouts change key labels and combinations. Try the laptop’s Fn layer for Print Screen, or avoid the hardware variation by using Windows + Shift + S and Window mode.
Which method should you use?
- Choose Snipping Tool Window mode when more than one window is visible, when you want to select the target explicitly, or when you need built-in editing, saving or sharing.
- Choose Alt + Print Screen when the target is already active and you want a quick clipboard copy for immediate pasting.
- Use a different application after capture when you need advanced annotation, file conversion or a workflow-specific destination.
Or skip the browser setup
If what you actually need is a screenshot of a web page rather than a local Windows application window, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It takes a URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF; it does not capture arbitrary desktop windows. A single GET request is enough:
