wkhtmltoimage does not document a CSS-selector option for capturing one element. Its documented approach is to crop a rectangle: determine the target’s position and size in the rendered page, then pass those pixel coordinates and dimensions with --crop-x, --crop-y, --crop-w and --crop-h. This works when a fixed crop is suitable; it is less convenient than selecting an element directly when the page layout changes.
What wkhtmltoimage can capture
The key distinction is between selecting a DOM element and cropping an image. The reviewed wkhtmltoimage image settings and command reference document a rectangular crop, not a native CSS-selector screenshot mode. The crop is defined by an origin—left and top—and dimensions—width and height—in pixels.
That means the tool does not identify an element such as #price and calculate its current bounds for you. You first need to establish where the element appears in the rendered capture surface, then supply that rectangle. The method is practical for a stable page and a known layout. If you need an element captured repeatedly across changing layouts, manual coordinates can become maintenance work.
The main wkhtmltopdf project repository is marked archived and read-only, and its README describes wkhtmltoimage as a headless tool using Qt WebKit. That status is about the repository; it does not establish the status or compatibility of every downstream package or fork. Check the behavior of the build actually installed on your system.

Prepare the page and measure the target
- Choose the exact page state. Decide which URL and content state you want in the image. If the target only appears after JavaScript runs, account for that before measuring its position.
- Fix the viewport width. Render at the width you intend to use for the screenshot. The command reference describes the width option as a guide unless smart width is disabled, so the final layout can depend on configuration and page behavior. A coordinate measured at one layout width may not identify the same content at another.
- Find the target’s rectangle. Determine its left and top position relative to the top-left of the capture surface, along with its rendered width and height. These are pixel values for the rendered output—not CSS selector text, document offsets copied without checking, or physical screen coordinates.
- Allow room for visible details. Decide whether the crop should include borders, shadows, or nearby whitespace. A crop exactly matching the element’s box may cut off visual effects that extend beyond it.
- Keep the measurement and capture conditions aligned. Use the same viewport and page state when measuring and capturing. Changes in responsive layout, delayed content, or configuration can shift the target and make an otherwise correct rectangle miss it.
There is no single coordinate set that works for every element. Replace the example values below with the rectangle you measured for your page.
Run the crop command
The documented crop controls are --crop-x, --crop-y, --crop-w and --crop-h. For example, this command requests a 640-by-240-pixel rectangle beginning 120 pixels from the left and 360 pixels from the top, and writes a PNG:
wkhtmltoimage --crop-x 120 --crop-y 360 --crop-w 640 --crop-h 240 https://example.com element.png
This is a concrete command shape, not a guarantee that those example coordinates contain an element on example.com. Supply your own URL and measured values, and confirm that your installed build accepts the options. The reference names the crop controls; output format support and details can vary with the installed build, so use an output format supported by that build.

Read the values as follows:
--crop-x: horizontal origin of the crop.--crop-y: vertical origin of the crop.--crop-w: width of the crop.--crop-h: height of the crop.
After capture, inspect the output rather than assuming the measured rectangle survived rendering unchanged. If the target is cut off or surrounded by too much of the page, adjust the corresponding origin or dimension and capture again.
Handle JavaScript-rendered content
A crop only helps if the desired content exists and is in the expected position when the image is taken. The Debian unstable command reference lists JavaScript enablement, a JavaScript delay, a window-status condition, and a repeatable post-load script option. These are ways to influence page readiness; their presence in the reference does not guarantee that an arbitrary modern site will render correctly.
Use a delay when a short wait is appropriate
--javascript-delay specifies a wait after page load for JavaScript to finish. For example, add --javascript-delay 2000 to request a 2,000-millisecond delay before capture:

A fixed delay is only a time allowance. It does not prove that a network request, animation, lazy-loaded image, or application-specific update has completed. If the page is still changing when the capture starts, increase or replace the wait strategy as appropriate and inspect the output.
Wait for a window status or run a script
The command reference also lists --window-status, which waits for a specified window status, and repeatable --run-script options for scripts run after page load. These can suit pages whose own JavaScript exposes a readiness signal or needs a post-load action. The exact status string or script depends on the page; wkhtmltoimage cannot infer the application’s readiness condition for you.

If the element is created or populated by page scripts, disabling JavaScript is likely to leave the desired state unavailable. Conversely, if scripts interfere with a static page or you do not need them, the setting is a choice to evaluate for that page. Validate the result with the installed version: the project release history records a historical fix for wkhtmltoimage ignoring --javascript-delay and --window-status, which is a reason not to assume all builds behave alike.

When a selector-based method is a better fit
A fixed crop is appropriate when the page geometry is predictable and you can maintain the coordinates. If the requirement is “capture the element matching this CSS selector,” a tool with a documented selector option removes the coordinate-measuring step. The capture-website project README documents an element option that accepts a CSS selector. It also documents a fixed clipping option; its README says element selection and clipping are mutually exclusive with each other and with full-page capture.
That is a capability distinction, not a performance or quality comparison: the reviewed material does not establish a current cross-platform benchmark, nor does it prove how either tool will behave on your particular page. Choose based on whether you need a one-off rectangle or repeatable selector-level capture, and verify the page’s rendered state in your environment.
Common problems and fixes
- The screenshot shows the wrong part of the page. The crop coordinates are relative to the capture surface. Recheck the target’s origin at the same viewport width and state used for capture, then adjust
--crop-xor--crop-y. - The element is clipped or has too much surrounding page. The width and height determine the crop dimensions. Re-measure them and account for visible shadows, borders, or whitespace rather than relying on the element’s nominal content size.
- The target is missing or blank. The relevant content may not have rendered before capture, or JavaScript may be disabled when the page depends on it. Try an appropriate documented readiness control—delay, window status, or post-load script—and confirm the page can render in the installed build.
- A delay does not fix intermittent output. Waiting a fixed duration cannot guarantee that asynchronous work has completed. Use a page-specific readiness signal when available, or capture after a state you have verified; do not treat a longer delay as proof of readiness.
- The command rejects a crop option or produces unexpected output. Confirm the installed executable and its option support, since behavior can differ between builds. Consult the command reference corresponding to the package you use and test a simple page before automating the capture.
- The crop works on one viewport but not another. Responsive breakpoints and smart width behavior can change layout. Measure at the same width and configuration as the capture, and repeat the measurement if those conditions change.
Or skip the browser setup
If you want selector-level capture without managing a local browser command and crop coordinates, ScreenshotNeo offers an API and MCP server for website screenshots. It can capture one element by CSS selector. For a standard page screenshot, the one-call API form is:

Cost, repeatability, and maintenance
The wkhtmltoimage workflow has no per-capture service price established by the cited documentation, so account for whatever it costs to install and operate the package in your environment rather than assuming a hosted-service rate. Its principal repeatability cost is keeping the rectangle correct: if the page layout, viewport, or target position changes, the stored coordinates may need to change too.
For a single stable page, that may be an acceptable trade-off. For a changing page, many URLs, or an automated pipeline, decide whether coordinate updates and output checks are manageable. Selector-based capture expresses the target by identity rather than a fixed position, but you still need to verify page readiness and the resulting image. No reviewed source establishes comparative speed, reliability, or compatibility across current platforms, so test the exact pages and build or service configuration you plan to use.
