To screenshot a login-protected website with Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP), use a Chrome session you are authorized to control, sign in through the site’s normal login flow, open the protected page, wait until the content you need is visible, and send Page.captureScreenshot to that page’s target. You can send the command interactively in Chrome DevTools Protocol Monitor or automate it with a CDP client. CDP does not provide a universal login or cookie-import recipe; authentication depends on the site.

Choose how to send the CDP command

CDP is the protocol Chrome DevTools uses to instrument, inspect, debug, and profile Chrome. Chrome documents two practical ways to send commands for this task: use Protocol Monitor for a one-off capture, or connect a program to Chrome for a repeatable workflow.

  • Protocol Monitor: best for a manual capture or exploring commands interactively inside DevTools.
  • A CDP client: better when you need to automate navigation, readiness checks, and capture as part of a script or test.

Capture a screenshot manually in Protocol Monitor

  1. Open Chrome DevTools and enable the Protocol Monitor experiment in DevTools Settings. Open the Protocol Monitor panel.
  2. Use the monitor’s selected page target and send commands to that target. The panel records CDP requests and responses and allows commands to be sent directly.
  3. Sign in to the site in the same Chrome session, using its normal authorized login flow. Then navigate to the protected page.
  4. Wait for the specific content you need to appear. A page-load event alone may not mean asynchronous content, images, or animations are finished.
  5. Send Page.captureScreenshot. Chrome’s documentation shows that this command can be entered without parameters, or supplied with JSON parameters; its example sets format to jpeg. Consult the protocol definitions for your Chrome version if you need options beyond the basic capture.

Chrome’s Protocol Monitor guide describes the panel as a way to “view all CDP requests and responses made by DevTools and send CDP commands directly.” See Chrome DevTools Protocol Monitor documentation.

Automate the capture with a CDP client

The automation flow is: launch Chrome with remote debugging enabled, connect a CDP client to that browser, enable the Page and Runtime domains, navigate, wait for the page-load event, verify the required content, and call Page.captureScreenshot. Chrome’s Headless Chrome documentation illustrates this protocol sequence. Its sample uses an older API and library style, so treat it as an illustration of the CDP flow rather than a recommendation for a current client version.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Start Chrome with remote debugging enabled, following the launch and connection approach in Chrome’s Headless Chrome documentation.
  2. Connect your chosen CDP client to the browser and select the page target you intend to control.
  3. Enable the Page and Runtime domains.
  4. Authenticate in that same browser session using the site’s authorized login process. If the site requires MFA, a consent screen, a device check, or application-specific state, complete those steps as required.
  5. Navigate to the protected URL with Page.navigate and wait for Page.loadEventFired.
  6. Check that the target content is actually present before capture. Chrome’s example demonstrates evaluating JavaScript with Runtime.evaluate; the appropriate readiness check depends on the site.
  7. Send Page.captureScreenshot to the page target and save the returned image data using your client’s supported method.

CDP libraries differ in connection setup, event handling, and how they expose returned screenshot data. Use the API for the specific client and version you install rather than copying an old sample’s library calls unchanged.

Handle authentication and page readiness safely

Keep login in the intended browser session

The browser controlled by CDP must have the session that can view the protected page. Use the site’s normal sign-in flow and only access accounts and pages you are authorized to use. Login state may expire or depend on MFA, redirects, device checks, or site-specific application state. General Chrome documentation does not establish one universal cookie-import procedure.

Wait for the state you need, not just the load event

Page.loadEventFired is a useful navigation milestone, but it does not prove that client-rendered content, lazy-loaded images, or animations have settled. Check for the relevant element or text, wait for a site-specific condition, or use an appropriate delay when no reliable signal is available. Avoid assuming that one readiness rule works for every page.

Restrict access to debugging and protect output

Remote debugging grants powerful browser access. Restrict the debugging endpoint to trusted users and systems, and treat authenticated browser profiles, protocol logs, screenshots, and exported data as potentially sensitive. Chrome’s statement that sanitized HAR exports omit sensitive Cookie, Set-Cookie, and Authorization headers by default applies to those HAR exports; it is not a guarantee that screenshots or all CDP output are sanitized. See Chrome DevTools Network documentation. Chrome also documents chrome.debugger as an alternate transport for the remote debugging protocol in its extensions reference.

Troubleshoot common capture failures

  • The protected page redirects to sign-in: the selected Chrome target may not have an active session, or the session may have expired. Sign in through the site in the browser session CDP controls, then navigate again.
  • MFA, consent, or a device check blocks navigation: complete the site’s normal verification in that session. CDP does not bypass those controls.
  • The screenshot shows a spinner or missing content: the load event may have fired before the application finished rendering. Add a site-appropriate readiness check and verify the target content before capture.
  • The command fails or returns an unexpected result: confirm that you sent it to the page target, that the required protocol domain is enabled where applicable, and that the command parameters match the protocol supported by your Chrome version.
  • You cannot connect to Chrome: check that Chrome was launched with remote debugging enabled and that the CDP client is connecting to the corresponding browser endpoint. Follow the setup method documented for your client and Chrome environment.
  • The output contains sensitive information: store screenshots and logs securely and limit access. HAR header sanitization does not sanitize screenshot contents.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single GET request can return a screenshot or PDF; for a URL that requires login, this is not a substitute for establishing authorized access to that page. Its clean-shot workflow accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and each response reports the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

For an authorized page available to the API, use this cURL request; replace the example target with your URL. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and options.

FAQ

Can CDP take a screenshot after I sign in manually?

Yes. If you sign in in the Chrome session controlled by CDP, navigate to the protected page in that same session, and capture the correct page target, CDP can capture the rendered page.
