Use the same Selenium-controlled browser session that completed the website’s permitted login, navigate to the page you are authorized to view, wait for a page-specific signal that its content is ready, then save a PNG with driver.save_screenshot(). Selenium can automate the browser and capture its screen; it does not grant access or permission, and it should not be used to bypass a portal’s login, CAPTCHA, multi-factor authentication, or other restrictions.
What you need before taking the screenshot
- Python and Selenium installed, plus a browser and compatible WebDriver setup.
- Permission to access the target page and to automate or capture it under that portal’s rules.
- A writable output location and a stable page-specific marker that indicates the content you need is present.
Government portals do not share one login flow. Login fields, redirects, multi-factor steps, page structure, and authorization rules vary by site. The example below deliberately assumes you have already authenticated through the site’s permitted process in the browser session that the script controls.

Python: log in through the permitted flow, wait, and save a PNG
This structure opens a normal Chrome session, pauses so you can complete an approved login step in that same browser, navigates to an authorized page, waits for a page marker, and saves a screenshot of the current browser window.

A generic main element may appear before the page has finished loading its meaningful content; prefer a heading, record identifier, completed-loading marker, or other stable signal specific to the page you intend to capture. The example is illustrative, not a tested script for any particular government site.
In Selenium’s Python WebDriver API, save_screenshot(filename) saves the current window to a PNG file and returns a boolean indicating whether it was saved. Use a destination path the process can write to. See the Selenium 4.50.0 Python WebDriver API.

Wait for the content, not just navigation
A navigation reaching the browser’s configured page-load readiness state does not prove that a JavaScript-driven application has finished rendering the content you need. Selenium recommends waiting for the condition the next action depends on. Its guidance also notes that fixed sleeps can be too short or unnecessarily long, and warns that combining implicit and explicit waits can produce unpredictable timing.

- Identify a reliable marker that appears only when the authenticated page or target content is ready.
- Wait for that condition with an explicit wait, as in the Python example.
- Capture only after the condition succeeds; if the marker is too broad, choose a more specific one.

Security and responsible use on government portals
Automate only access you are authorized to perform, and follow the target portal’s terms and instructions. If an approved login requires a manual action, complete it in the same browser session and continue afterward. Do not bypass CAPTCHA, multi-factor authentication, rate limits, or access restrictions.

The Guidelines for Indian Government Websites and apps security guidance discusses protecting website resources from unauthorized use and includes secure, HTTP-only cookies and login CAPTCHA among its recommendations. These are website-security recommendations, not blanket permission for automated access to any portal.
The National Portal of India cookie page says its session cookie manages that portal’s session and is deleted on logout or leaving the site. That statement applies to the National Portal of India; cookie behavior on other government websites may differ.

Common problems and fixes
