Press Shift-Command-5 to open Screenshot, choose a full-screen or selected-area recording, then click Record. You can choose a microphone, show mouse clicks, set a timer, and change where the video is saved in Options. On macOS Tahoe 26 or later, supported Macs also offer selected-window recording.
Record your Mac screen with Screenshot
- Press Shift-Command-5. The Screenshot toolbar appears on screen.
- Choose Record Entire Screen or Record Selected Portion. For a portion, adjust the frame around the area you want to capture. If you use macOS Tahoe 26 or later, a supported Mac may also show Record Selected Window.
- Open Options to choose a microphone, show mouse clicks, set a timer, or change the save location. On supported Macs running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, you may also see a format choice.
- Click Record. Carry out the actions you want to capture.
- To finish, click the Stop control in the menu bar, or press Command-Control-Esc.
- Click the floating thumbnail to review or edit the recording, or wait for it to save. By default, recordings go to the Desktop. Apple’s automatic filename format is “Screen Recording [date] at [time].mov.”

Choose the right recording options
Capture the whole screen, a portion, or a window
Use Record Entire Screen for a walkthrough that moves between apps or areas of the desktop. Choose Record Selected Portion when viewers only need to see one part of the display. The selected-window option is documented for macOS Tahoe 26 or later; availability depends on the Mac and system version.
Include narration or other audio
In Options, select the microphone you want Screenshot to use if you need to record your voice or other audio input. Apple’s instructions do not say that an external microphone is required.

Make clicks visible
Enable the option to show mouse clicks if you are demonstrating where to click. Screenshot displays a black circle when you click, which can make a software tutorial easier to follow.
Set a timer and save destination
Use the timer in Options if you need a moment to prepare before capture begins. Set Save to if you want the recording somewhere other than the Desktop, which is the default destination.

Select a format, if your Mac offers it
On supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Apple lists SDR (Most Compatible), which captures standard dynamic range in H.264, and HDR, which uses HEVC. Check the options available on your own Mac; Apple qualifies these choices by model and operating-system version.
Use QuickTime Player as another starting point
Open QuickTime Player and choose File > New Screen Recording, or press Control-Command-N. Apple’s current guide says this opens Screenshot and its controls. Depending on the interface shown, QuickTime may instead present its older recording window: use the arrow beside Record to choose a microphone or pointer-click display, then click to record the entire screen or drag an area and choose Start Recording. If the Screenshot toolbar opens, follow the Screenshot steps above.

Find, play, and edit the recording
If you did not change Save to, look on the Desktop for a file named in the format “Screen Recording [date] at [time].mov.” You can click the floating thumbnail immediately after stopping to review or edit it. Apple also says recordings can be opened in QuickTime Player, iMovie, and other apps that can view or edit video.
When screen recording does not capture a window
Some apps restrict recording of their windows. Apple gives Apple TV as an example, and does not document a universal workaround. If a particular window appears blank or is unavailable, treat that as an app restriction rather than assuming a Screenshot setting will bypass it.
