For a website that exposes usable page content, start in Excel with Data > From Web. Power Query can find tables, let you shape the result, and load it into a worksheet; you can then refresh the connection when you need updated data. If the page has no suitable detected table, try Navigator’s Add table using examples. Dynamic pages, sign-in requirements, and differences between desktop and cloud refresh can change what works, so check the extracted values and test refresh in your own workbook.
Before importing: identify what the website actually provides
“Scraping” can mean anything from importing a simple HTML table to retrieving data generated by a script after the page opens. The right route depends on the source, not just on whether the data is visible in a browser.
- HTML table: Start with Excel’s From Web connector and choose a table in Navigator.
- Irregular page content: Try Add table using examples, then inspect and transform the extracted values.
- API or downloadable file: Use the Web connector’s API or file-oriented options where appropriate instead of assuming the source is an ordinary webpage.
- Dynamic page: If the site fills in data after scripts run, a basic page retrieval may not expose the same content you see in the browser.
Also decide where refresh must work: in desktop Excel or in a cloud-published workflow. Connector behavior and requirements are not identical across every Excel edition or hosting setup.
Import a webpage with Excel’s From Web connector
Microsoft documents the desktop entry point as Data > From Web. Depending on the product interface, the route may instead appear under Get Data > From Other Sources > From Web. The connector uses Power Query to connect to the source, preview available data, and load a selected result.

- Open the connector. In Excel, go to Data > From Web, or use Get Data > From Other Sources > From Web if that is the route shown in your edition.
- Enter the page URL. Provide the address of the page that contains the data. If the site requests authentication, choose the appropriate supported sign-in method when prompted.
- Review Navigator. Excel presents the tables and other data it can identify. Select a candidate and compare its preview with the page’s actual content.
- Choose whether to transform. Select Transform Data if you need to clean or reshape the result before putting it in the worksheet.
- Load the result. Choose Load to place the selected data into the workbook.
- Verify the worksheet. Check column names, row counts, and sample values against the website before relying on the imported data.
A successful connection does not prove that Excel selected the intended table or every row. Preview and verify the data rather than assuming that the first detected result is correct.
When Navigator does not find the data you need
If the information is visible on the page but no suitable table appears, try Add table using examples in Navigator. Enter examples of the values you want to extract; Power Query attempts to find other page values that match them. Microsoft describes this as an option for both data inside tables and non-table page content.
- In Navigator, choose Add table using examples.
- Enter representative values from the fields you want, such as a name or price, in the example area.
- Review the values Power Query suggests and compare them with the source page.
- Use Power Query Editor to transform or combine the extracted data as needed.
- Load only after checking that the suggested rows and columns correspond to the intended fields.
Example-based extraction is a best-effort aid, not a guarantee that every visual element can be read accurately. Microsoft documents a limit of 128 characters for suggested example values. If the values are ambiguous, change the examples or use a better-structured source if one is available.
Choose the connector for an API, file, or authenticated source
The Power Query Web connector can work with HTML pages and web-hosted CSV, JSON, XML, PDF, and other documented formats. If you have a direct API endpoint or downloadable file, use the corresponding Web API or file-specific options where they fit the source; do not treat every URL as a normal webpage.

Authentication
Microsoft documents Anonymous, Windows, Basic, Web API, and Organizational Account authentication for the desktop Web connector. Available methods and their behavior can differ between products. Select the method the target service actually supports, and do not put credentials into a shared workbook or query in a way that exposes them to other users.
API request details
The advanced dialog can compose URL parts, and Microsoft documents that Web.Contents supports request headers. Microsoft also states that POST requests through Web.Contents can be made only anonymously. That restriction matters if an API expects an authenticated POST: do not assume that choosing an authentication option in the connector makes that request possible.
Handle pages that render data after loading
Some pages populate their data with browser-side scripts after the initial page response. In that case, the content visible in a browser may not be available to a basic retrieval at the same point in the process. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance points to Web.BrowserContents with a WaitFor selector or a specified wait time when content needs time to appear.
After changing the retrieval approach, compare the Power Query result with the visible page and test a later refresh. A wait condition can help with delayed content, but it does not make an unstable page structure reliable or guarantee that extraction finds the intended fields.

There are also product prerequisites in Microsoft’s connector documentation: Web.BrowserContents requires the Microsoft Edge WebView2 runtime, while Web.Page has an Internet Explorer 10 prerequisite in the documented scenarios. For some cloud publishing workflows, the Web Page connector requires an on-premises data gateway. Requirements depend on the connector and host, so check the setup for the particular Excel environment where refresh will run.
Clean the result and make refresh useful
Power Query’s value is not just retrieving a page once. It also gives you a place to shape the imported data before loading it. Use Transform Data when the result needs cleanup or combining, then confirm that the worksheet has the fields and values your work depends on.
- Check that headers identify the intended fields, not page labels or unrelated content.
- Compare representative values and the row count with the source.
- Test refresh after the initial import; a page that works once may change, require a sign-in, or return differently later.
- Confirm refresh in the environment where it will actually run, especially if a workbook will be published to a cloud workflow.
- Recheck results after the source site changes its layout or data presentation.
The From Web connector can refresh its connection to request the latest updates from the selected website. That is not a promise that every site will refresh successfully: page changes, access controls, dynamic rendering, and host-specific requirements can intervene.
Troubleshooting common import and refresh problems
No useful table appears in Navigator
Try Add table using examples and provide clear sample values. Inspect the extracted preview rather than assuming the page’s visual layout maps neatly to columns. If the page is script-rendered, investigate a browser-content approach with an appropriate wait condition.

The preview is blank or misses values shown in the browser
The data may appear only after browser-side scripts run, or the extraction may have selected the wrong content. Try the dynamic-content guidance using Web.BrowserContents and a WaitFor selector or time, then compare the result with the rendered page.
Refresh works on one computer but not in the intended host
Check which connector and authentication method the workflow uses, whether the target host supports that setup, and whether a gateway is required for the specific cloud publishing scenario. Desktop and cloud behavior should not be presumed identical.
The source requires a login or API key
Choose an authentication method supported by both the source and the connector in your product. For API calls, account for the documented limitation that POST requests through Web.Contents can be made only anonymously. If the source’s requirements do not fit that method, the connector may not be suitable for that request.
The imported rows or fields look plausible but are wrong
Compare column names, sample values, and row counts with the source. For example-based extraction, revise ambiguous examples and inspect the suggestions. Test refresh as well as the initial result; a plausible preview alone is not a validation.

Permissions and responsible collection
Excel’s ability to retrieve a page does not establish that you have permission to collect or reuse its data. Rules depend on the target website and applicable jurisdiction, neither of which can be settled by the connector documentation. Check the site’s terms and access rules before collecting data, and do not treat a technically successful request as authorization.

No. A Power Query import aims to bring data into a workbook as values you can work with. A screenshot is an image of page content, not a structured table of cells.
