The compliant way to scrape Reddit is to use its authenticated Data API, not HTML scraping. Register an OAuth application, request a token, identify your client with a unique descriptive User-Agent, page listing endpoints with cursors, obey the rate-limit headers, collect only the fields your purpose requires, and remove deleted content and account-linked identifiers from your store. Reddit says scraping its services without an authorized agreement can violate its policy; robots.txt is guidance for search engines, not permission to use the Data API.
What “scraping Reddit” should mean
For a small analysis, subreddit monitor, moderation tool, or research dataset, “scraping” should mean making authorized API requests and storing a narrowly defined result. The API returns structured JSON, so you avoid brittle HTML selectors and make pagination, retries, provenance, and deletion handling explicit.
Write down the purpose before collecting anything. A useful scope statement names the subreddits, date range, fields, refresh frequency, retention period, and who may access the data. Do not collect usernames, profile links, or other identifiers unless they are necessary for that stated purpose.
Choose an authorized access route
Reddit Data API with OAuth
This is the normal route for an application. Reddit requires a registered OAuth client, an OAuth token, and a unique, descriptive User-Agent. Do not hide the client identity, rotate proxies to evade controls, spoof a browser User-Agent, bypass CAPTCHAs, or use undocumented JSON shortcuts as a substitute for authorization.

Reddit for Researchers
Academic researchers should apply to Reddit for Researchers (RFR). Reddit identifies that program as the only official and authorized avenue for research using Reddit data. Research that exceeds normal access, or a commercial use case, may require a separate agreement with Reddit.

Reddit API limits and policy obligations
Reddit Help currently lists 100 queries per minute per OAuth client for eligible free access, averaged over a ten-minute window (Reddit Help, 2026). Treat that as a current policy figure rather than a permanent guarantee: Reddit’s Data API Terms reserve the right to enforce limits.
Read X-Ratelimit-Used, X-Ratelimit-Remaining, and X-Ratelimit-Reset on every response. When remaining capacity is low, sleep for the reset interval or longer. A 429 response is a signal to back off, not to switch IP addresses.
Reddit requires removal of deleted posts, comments, and account-linked identifiers. Reddit Help recommends routinely deleting stored user data and content within 48 hours (Reddit Help, 2026) to support compliance. Keep retrieval timestamps and source IDs so a deletion job can find and remove records.

Register an OAuth client and obtain a token
- Create a Reddit application and record its client ID and client secret. A script or confidential client is appropriate for a server-side collector; never put the secret in browser JavaScript or commit it to a repository.
- Choose a descriptive User-Agent such as
itechguides-reddit-monitor/1.0 (contact: data@example.com). Identify the application and provide a contact address; do not use a generic default client string. - Request an OAuth access token with your client credentials. Keep the token in memory or a protected secret store and renew it when it expires.
The following read-only example uses the client-credentials grant. Replace the placeholders with your own values and set the secret through environment variables.

fetch()The API can return fields such as an absent author or a [deleted] body. Treat those values as deletion signals and remove the corresponding stored record rather than preserving an old copy. Run a separate deletion sweep at least daily and design retention so records are removed within the 48-hour recommendation.

Pagination that does not miss or duplicate posts
Reddit listing endpoints document after, before, limit, count, and show. Save the last cursor only after a page has been written successfully. On restart, read that cursor and request the next page. Stop when the response contains no after value.
- Use a stable de-duplication key such as the post or comment ID. A retry can return the same page.
- Do not assume
limit=100means exactly 100 results; deleted, filtered, or unavailable items can reduce the count. - For historical windows, use
beforeto walk backward and record both the cursor and the time range. - Keep the raw retrieval timestamp separate from Reddit’s
created_utc; this preserves provenance when content changes.

Data minimization, provenance, and deletion
- Store IDs, subreddit, retrieval time, and only the text or numeric fields needed for the stated purpose.
- Keep raw content separate from derived aggregates so you can delete source records without rebuilding every metric.
- Restrict access to raw text and encrypt credentials and exports.
- Record the client version, User-Agent, query parameters, and response status for each run.
- Schedule a deletion job that removes records for deleted posts, comments, and account-linked identifiers, and expires all data outside the approved retention period.
Do not treat a public post as permission for unrelated commercial reuse. If your purpose changes, reassess the authorization and retention plan before collecting more data.
Common failures and fixes
401 Unauthorized
Check that the token is current, the header is exactly Authorization: bearer TOKEN, and the request is sent to the OAuth host. Renew the token instead of retrying the same expired value.
403 Forbidden or a blocked response
Verify the registered app, honest User-Agent, and permitted use. Do not respond with proxy rotation, User-Agent spoofing, or CAPTCHA bypass; those actions can violate Reddit’s rules.
429 Too Many Requests
Read X-Ratelimit-Reset, sleep for that period plus a small margin, reduce concurrency, and resume from the saved cursor. A fixed high request rate is unsafe because limits are dynamic.
Empty pages or a missing cursor
A listing can legitimately be empty or finished. Stop when after is null, and distinguish that condition from a timeout or JSON parse error in your logs.

Content is suddenly “[deleted]”
Mark the source record for deletion and let the deletion job remove stored text and identifiers. Do not retain an earlier snapshot merely because it was collected lawfully at the time.
Collector restarts from the beginning
Persist the cursor atomically after writing each successful page and de-duplicate by ID. Keep a backup of state so a damaged state file cannot silently expand the crawl.

For a single subreddit, one sequential worker is usually easier to observe and keep within policy than many concurrent workers. Batch the smallest useful field set, use connection reuse, set finite timeouts, and apply exponential backoff for transient network errors. Separate token acquisition, fetching, storage, and deletion into testable components.
Estimate volume from pages per run, refresh frequency, and the current rate-limit headers rather than assuming a fixed quota. API access can change under Reddit’s policies; build an alert when remaining capacity, error rate, or deletion-job age crosses your chosen threshold. Formal research, commercial use, or traffic beyond ordinary limits should be discussed with Reddit under a separate agreement when required.

PRAW can be convenient, but production teams should verify its current authentication compatibility, observe the requests generated by lazy iteration, and implement their own retention and deletion controls.
