You can technically extract information shown on Kickstarter pages, but that does not mean you have permission to crawl them. Kickstarter’s cited historical Terms of Use prohibit manual or automated crawling or spidering, bypassing access controls, and certain uses of its content. Before collecting campaign data, get written permission or use a data channel Kickstarter has approved. If you are authorized, keep the collection narrow, record where each value came from, and build for site changes rather than relying on undocumented requests.
Start with permission, not a scraper
Kickstarter’s historical Terms of Use page, which is identified as applying to older projects, says users must not use manual or automated software to crawl or spider the site, bypass access measures, or impose an unreasonable load. It also describes the service as for personal, non-commercial use and restricts other use, reproduction, distribution, or storage of content without permission from Kickstarter or the relevant copyright holder. Treat that language as a clear policy warning, not as permission to proceed if a page happens to be public.
The current Terms should be checked before any production collection. The current legal-center page was not available as readable text in the material informing this guide, so this article does not claim to interpret its present wording. This is practical guidance, not legal advice. For a project that needs campaign data, request written authorization or an approved export/API first, and confirm what fields, volume, retention, and reuse the authorization covers.
- Publicly visible is not the same as unrestricted. Kickstarter distinguishes public from non-public information; its law-enforcement guidance says some information is not public or is limited to particular people.
- Do not bypass controls. Stop if you encounter a CAPTCHA, access restriction, robots or deletion signal, or a request to cease collection. Do not evade it with account sessions, rotating identities, or other workarounds.
- Commercial use needs its own authorization. Permission to view a campaign does not by itself grant a right to reuse its text, images, comments, or other expressive material.
Choose an authorized collection method
Technical reports describe several ways researchers have gathered campaign information. These descriptions explain what has been done; they are not endorsements or guarantees that a method is permitted, stable, or currently available.

If Kickstarter has approved a data channel, prefer that channel over reverse-engineering internal requests. If your authorization only permits a fixed export, do not turn it into recurring automated collection. A screenshot is a visual record, not a structured campaign-data feed.
Define the dataset before collecting it
Write down the question the dataset must answer and the smallest set of campaign-level fields that will answer it. A focused schema makes it easier to stay within the permission granted, reduce personal-data exposure, and detect when the source changes.

- Scope: purpose, geography or locale, date range, campaign selection rule, and whether the run is one-time or recurring.
- Fields: list each required field, its source, and a reason it is needed. Prefer campaign-level public metadata over names, email addresses, shipping addresses, pledge details, or other personal information.
- Reuse: identify whether the output is for internal analysis, publication, or commercial use. Do not republish images, reward descriptions, comments, or other expressive content unless permission covers that use.
- Provenance: retain the source URL, retrieval timestamp, country or locale, parser version, and fields extracted for each record.
- Lifecycle: define retention, deletion, correction, and access controls before the first run.
Parse an authorized HTML file with Python
The following example processes a local HTML file that you already have permission to use, such as an approved export or a page supplied for analysis. It does not request Kickstarter pages or bypass access controls. It writes a CSV containing a page title, description, and canonical URL when those values are present. Install the dependency with python -m pip install beautifulsoup4, save the authorized HTML as campaign.html, then run the script.

Inspect an authorized sample, verify each extracted value, and adapt the parser only to the structure your permission covers. For a batch of approved files, loop over a controlled file list and write one row per file; keep an error log so missing fields are visible rather than silently treated as valid data.

Run an authorized collection carefully
Use an approved source and conservative volume
Use the export, API, or capture procedure Kickstarter has expressly approved for your purpose. Agree on request frequency and total volume with the authorization rather than guessing a safe rate. Cache only as the authorization permits, identify your operator where requested, and stop on access-control, deletion, or cease-and-desist signals. No reliable rate-limit figure is established here, so do not assume one.
Validate each field and preserve provenance
Check representative records manually against the authorized source. Validate types and required values, track missing or changed fields, and record the run timestamp and parser version. Keep raw input only if permitted and necessary; separate it from the minimized dataset and apply the authorized retention period. If a value is corrected or deleted at the source, have a process to reflect that in downstream copies.

Review the policy before each production run
Terms, developer channels, authentication requirements, and site behavior can change. Reconfirm the applicable permission and approved method before a recurring run. Do not treat a working endpoint, browser session, or response as evidence that the method remains authorized.
Troubleshoot without escalating access
- The parser returns blank fields: the authorized HTML may not contain the expected metadata, or its structure may have changed. Inspect the local source, revise selectors for that authorized sample, and flag absent values instead of inferring them.
- A browser shows more than the saved HTML: the page may render content dynamically. Ask whether the approved export or capture method includes rendered content; browser automation is not permission to crawl.
- Session requests stop working: authenticated requests can depend on session cookies and CSRF tokens. The University of Twente thesis reports that reusing static headers/cookies was unreliable. Do not work around failed authentication; use an approved channel and protect account credentials.
- You receive a CAPTCHA, denial, or access restriction: stop the collection and contact the authorization owner or Kickstarter. Do not automate a bypass.
- Records change between runs: record retrieval dates, source URLs, locale, and parser version so an analyst can distinguish source changes from parsing errors. Follow the permission’s correction and retention conditions.
- You cannot establish permission for storage or publication: do not collect or republish the affected content until the rights and permitted use are clear.
