This guide distinguishes them, shows a basic API workflow, and explains what each OpenAI crawler setting does. The terms and product details discussed here are based on OpenAI’s official documentation available on September 29, 2026; terms and interfaces can change. This is a source-based explanation, not legal advice.
What does “scrape ChatGPT” mean?
The phrase can refer to at least three things: collecting information from the consumer ChatGPT interface, making programmatic requests to OpenAI models, or letting OpenAI’s crawlers access a website you control. The right answer depends on which one you mean.

The API is for sending requests to models. It is not a supported way to retrieve ChatGPT’s private conversation store or other users’ conversations.

Can you scrape the ChatGPT website?
OpenAI’s global Terms of Use, published and effective January 1, 2026, apply to ChatGPT and other individual services. Among the prohibited activities, they specify automatically or programmatically extracting data or Output from the services. They also prohibit interfering with the service, including circumventing rate limits or bypassing protective measures.
Accordingly, this article does not provide browser automation, session-cookie extraction, or instructions for evading rate limits or anti-bot checks on ChatGPT. A workflow that happens to work technically is not thereby an authorized or supported one. If you need repeatable model output, use the API route below and check its documentation and terms.
Check the regional terms that apply to you
The global terms direct residents of the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom to separate Europe Terms of Use, updated January 16, 2026. Those terms also prohibit automatic or programmatic extraction. The applicable terms can depend on your location and the service you use, so read the current version relevant to you rather than treating one page as universal legal advice.
How to make programmatic model requests with the OpenAI API
For code-driven requests, OpenAI’s Developer quickstart documents creating an API key, storing it safely, and using an official SDK. OpenAI describes API access separately from use of ChatGPT; do not assume a consumer account or subscription includes API access. The quickstart’s Python setup uses the official openai package and the Responses API.

- Create an API key through the OpenAI developer platform, following the current quickstart. Do not paste it into a public repository, browser code, or a shared document.
- Set the key as an environment variable named
OPENAI_API_KEY, as the SDK can read it there. Keep credentials on a server or in a trusted local development environment. - Install the SDK with
pip install openaiif you are following the Python example. - Send a request through the SDK and read the returned text. Select a model available to your API account using the current model documentation; availability and names can change.
Python example
This follows the quickstart’s SDK pattern. Set OPENAI_MODEL to a model available to your project before running it; the script deliberately does not assume a model name.

Use your operating system’s normal environment-variable mechanism; avoid putting the secret directly in the script.
JavaScript SDK example
The quickstart also documents JavaScript SDK usage. The following shows the same basic shape; install the official SDK, set the API key and a model available to your project, then run in a server-side Node.js environment.

OpenAI’s migration guide describes the Responses API as its newer API primitive and recommends it for new projects, while saying Chat Completions remains supported. Responses supports documented tools such as web search, file search, computer use, code interpreter, and remote MCP, along with multi-turn interactions and multimodal input. Check the current migration guide before choosing a pattern, because API capabilities and recommendations may change.

Think of API calls as requests made by your application, not as scraping the consumer website. Your integration should use credentials securely and follow the API documentation and terms applicable to your project. ChatGPT interface settings and API behavior are not interchangeable.
If you mean OpenAI crawling your website
Website owners can set crawler access rules for their own sites. OpenAI’s Overview of OpenAI Crawlers distinguishes three user agents. The key choice is whether you want search discovery, to indicate that content should not be used for training, or to accommodate certain user-triggered visits.

Allow search while disallowing GPTBot
OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot settings are independent. If you want to permit search crawling while indicating that GPTBot should not crawl your site, a robots.txt pattern can express those separate choices:

Disallow: /This is an example for a site owner to adapt and verify against the current crawler guide and their existing robots.txt rules. If instead you want to block both, create rules for both user agents; do not assume a rule for one automatically controls the other. Robots.txt is a crawler instruction, not an access-control system that makes public pages private.

Search inclusion is not guaranteed
Allowing OAI-SearchBot permits crawling under the stated site rules; it does not guarantee indexing, ranking, inclusion in an answer, a citation, or referral traffic. OpenAI says that after a robots.txt update, its systems may take approximately 24 hours to adjust for search results.
OpenAI’s Publishers and Developers FAQ says ChatGPT search referrals include utm_source=chatgpt.com, which publishers can use in analytics. The FAQ also describes an Atlas case where a disallowed page’s link and title may still surface if its URL is found through other sources, and points to noindex for that situation; the crawler must be allowed to read the meta tag. Treat these as FAQ-specific details and verify their current applicability before relying on them.

Troubleshooting the API and crawler setup
API key errors
- Missing-key or authentication error: Confirm
OPENAI_API_KEYis set in the environment of the process running your script. Restart the shell or application after changing environment variables. Do not solve the problem by hard-coding the key into client-side code. - Key exposed in a repository or browser: Treat it as compromised, follow the platform’s current key-management steps, and move requests to a trusted server. Keep the replacement key out of source control.
- Model error: Confirm
OPENAI_MODELnames a model available to your API project and that the request uses the API documented for that model. Do not infer API access or model availability from what appears in ChatGPT.
Robots.txt changes do not show up immediately
- Check the publicly served
/robots.txtfor syntax and ensure rules name the exact user agent you intend to control. - Keep OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot policies separate if your search and training preferences differ.
- Allow time for the stated adjustment period; OpenAI says it may take approximately 24 hours for systems to adjust search results after an update.
- If a page is publicly reachable, robots.txt alone does not make it private. Use an appropriate access-control mechanism for confidential material.
A site does not appear in ChatGPT search
Check whether OAI-SearchBot is disallowed and whether your page is publicly accessible to the crawler. Permission to crawl is not a promise of appearance in search answers. OpenAI’s publisher FAQ discusses the particular case of a disallowed page’s link and title surfacing through other sources and its use of noindex; consult that guidance if controlling those references is your concern.

Do not assume it does. OpenAI documents the API as a separate developer service with its own key setup and terms; check your account’s current API access and billing details.
Can I block ChatGPT-User to control search visibility?
No. OpenAI describes OAI-SearchBot as the crawler used for search features. ChatGPT-User covers certain user-triggered visits and does not determine search inclusion.
Does allowing OAI-SearchBot guarantee citations or visitors?
