To scrape a website, request a page, inspect the content returned, and extract only the fields you need. Start with ordinary HTML; if the data is missing, look for a permitted data source the page uses; use a headless browser only when the content appears after browser-side rendering. Scraping collects information from pages you request. Crawling follows links to additional pages.

Before you scrape: define the task and check permission

Choose pages and fields

Write down the URLs you need and the exact fields to collect—for example, a product name, an article title, or a date. Begin with one page and verify that the fields are present before expanding to pagination or other URLs. Keep each record’s source URL so you can check it later.

Check robots.txt, terms, and authorization

A site’s robots.txt file is normally at its root, such as https://example.com/robots.txt. It gives crawlers instructions about paths to avoid. Robots directives and the robots.txt file have distinct roles: robots.txt guides crawling, while robots meta tags and the X-Robots-Tag header influence indexing and search presentation. See MDN’s robots.txt glossary and MDN’s X-Robots-Tag reference.

Robots.txt is not permission to access a page. The IETF’s RFC 9309, published in September 2022, says: “These rules are not a form of access authorization.” Check the site’s current terms, any authorized API or dataset, applicable law, and privacy obligations. A technically reachable URL is not necessarily one you are allowed to collect or reuse. This guide cannot determine whether a particular collection is lawful in your jurisdiction.

Choose the simplest method that exposes the data

Use this decision sequence: response HTML, then a relevant data source, then browser rendering. The right choice depends on where the required content actually appears, not on a claim that one method is always faster or more reliable.

What you find Approach Trade-off
The required fields appear in the HTTP response Request the page and parse its HTML Lightweight and direct, but selectors can break when markup changes.
You need a repeated crawl with links, pagination, and response handling Use a crawling framework such as Scrapy Designed around crawl requests and responses, but requires setup and maintenance.
The response lacks fields, but the page retrieves them from a data source Inspect the page’s network requests and request that source, if permitted Can avoid rendering a full browser; endpoints and formats may change.
The content appears only after browser-side rendering Use a headless browser Can expose the rendered DOM, with added browser runtime and operational complexity.

Scrape content in the HTTP response

For a page whose information is already in its response, a basic workflow is to request the URL, parse the returned HTML, select stable elements, and validate the extracted values. The example below uses Python with Requests and Beautiful Soup. Install the dependencies with python -m pip install requests beautifulsoup4.

Replace the example URL and selector with a page and field you are authorized to collect. The example prints one record; for a real job, write records to a format your downstream process accepts and retain the source URL. There is no universal selector or output format: choose based on the site structure and how you will use the data.

Use selectors that match the field

CSS selectors such as h1 or .price can target elements; use get_text(" ", strip=True) to extract readable text. For attributes, read the attribute explicitly—for example, an image’s src or a link’s href. Resolve relative links against the page URL with urljoin. Normalize whitespace, but avoid transformations that discard meaningful punctuation, units, or dates.

Do not assume browser content is response content

The HTML a browser eventually displays may differ from the initial HTTP response. A page can use JavaScript network requests to fetch data and update part of the document without loading a new page. MDN describes this pattern in Making network requests with JavaScript.

When content is dynamic: find the data source first

If your parser cannot find a field, inspect whether the page loads it through a network request. Scrapy recommends looking for the data source when content is dynamically loaded; if that source is unavailable for your permitted use but the content remains in the browser DOM, use a headless browser as a fallback. See Scrapy’s guide to selecting dynamically loaded content.

  1. Compare the response and rendered page. Inspect the initial HTML response, then check whether the field appears after the page finishes loading.
  2. Look for the request that supplies the missing field. In browser developer tools, inspect the Network panel while loading the page and identify relevant data requests. Confirm that using the endpoint is permitted; do not treat a discoverable endpoint as authorization.
  3. Request the data source where appropriate. If it provides the required fields and is authorized for your use, parse its returned data instead of rendering a whole page.
  4. Render the page only if needed. If the needed content is available in the browser DOM but not through an appropriate data source, use a headless browser and select from the rendered page.

Turn a single-page scraper into a careful crawl

Crawling adds discovery: the scraper follows relevant links or pagination to request more pages. Keep the crawl bounded to the pages and fields you actually need.

  • Start from known entry pages and follow only relevant links or next-page controls.
  • Track visited URLs so the same page is not fetched repeatedly.
  • Limit request rate and unnecessary retries. There is no universal safe rate established here; follow site guidance and reduce activity or stop if the site signals a problem.
  • Handle missing fields and unusual page layouts without treating them as valid records.
  • Validate a sample of extracted records against their source pages, including pages with missing data or different formatting.

Common problems and how to address them

Symptom Likely cause Next step
A selector returns no result The selector does not match the markup, or the field is added after the initial response. Inspect the returned HTML and selector. If the field is absent, check for a data request; consider browser rendering only if needed.
Some records have empty or malformed values Pages differ, fields are optional, or the selector matches more than intended. Inspect the affected source URLs, handle missing values explicitly, and validate representative page variants.
Pagination repeats pages or stops too soon The next-page link is being misread, or visited URLs are not tracked. Check the pagination link on source pages, resolve relative URLs, and keep a set of visited URLs.
Requests fail or the site signals a problem The site may be unavailable, the request may be inappropriate, or the request volume may be excessive. Stop or reduce activity, check the site’s guidance and terms, and use an authorized interface where available. Do not attempt to bypass access restrictions.
Extracted text differs from what the browser shows Browser-side JavaScript may fetch or render the missing content. Inspect the relevant network data source first; use a headless browser if the permitted content is only present in the rendered DOM.

Or skip the browser setup:

If the task is to capture a page as an image or PDF rather than extract selected fields into records, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-call screenshot API. Its capture options include full-page screenshots, element capture by CSS selector, custom JavaScript, and PDF output. This captures pages; it does not replace a scraper that needs to parse fields into structured records.
