To extract information from a Shopify storefront with BrowserQL, send a GraphQL mutation that opens a page, waits for the content you need, and extracts its text or other page data. BrowserQL is Browserless’s hosted browser automation interface; it can read content rendered in a browser, but a page loading successfully does not grant permission to collect or reuse its data. If you own the store or have merchant authorization and the Storefront API exposes the fields you need, use that supported API instead.
Before you scrape: confirm access and purpose
Use BrowserQL only for pages and data you are authorized to access and collect. Decide what fields you actually need, how you will use them, and whether you have permission to store or redistribute them.
Shopify’s API Terms of Use prohibit systematic or automated collection through the Shopify API—including scraping, data mining, extraction, or harvesting—unless authorized by Shopify or to the extent applicable law expressly prohibits the restriction. Those terms address API use; they are not a complete legal analysis of every public webpage or jurisdiction. Shopify also says API requests should be limited to the minimum data needed for the app’s intended functionality and the permissions granted by the merchant or Shopify. Read Shopify’s API Terms of Use.
For public storefront crawling, Shopify documents Web Bot Auth as a way for a crawler, script, or tool to securely identify itself to a store. Its examples include accessibility and SEO audits, automated testing, and data analysis. This is guidance for authorized crawling, not blanket permission to extract any store’s data. See Shopify’s Web Bot Auth guidance.

Choose BrowserQL or Shopify’s Storefront API
| Need | Better starting point | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Merchant-authorized access to buyer-facing store data, and the required fields are available through Shopify | Storefront API | Use a supported API version and the appropriate token and permissions. Shopify’s versioned reference surfaced for 2026-04 documents products, collections, search, pages, blogs/articles, and carts. Storefront API reference, version 2026-04. |
| Information appears only after page rendering or interaction, or the task requires browser actions | BrowserQL | Use an authorized page, wait for the actual content, and extract only the needed text or attributes. Page selectors can depend on a store’s theme and structure. BrowserQL documentation. |
| Backend access to merchant store data | Shopify Admin API, if the merchant has granted the necessary scopes | Do not confuse the Admin API with the Storefront API: Shopify describes the Admin API as the backend API for reading and writing merchant data. Shopify API overview. |
The Storefront API endpoint pattern for the 2026-04 version is https://{store_name}.myshopify.com/api/2026-04/graphql.json, using a GraphQL POST. Shopify advises specifying a supported API version. The documentation describes tokenless access, public access tokens for browser or mobile use, and private access tokens for server-side use. Tokenless requests have a query complexity limit of 1,000; features such as product tags, metaobjects and metafields, online-store menus, and customers require token-based access. Shopify also limits automated Storefront API traffic and crawlers, most strictly when unsigned, and documents Web Bot Auth for requesting higher limits. Check the current version, access requirements, and limits before building against it. Storefront API reference.
How BrowserQL works
BrowserQL (BQL) is Browserless’s declarative GraphQL protocol for browser automation: you describe browser actions in mutations, and Browserless runs a managed browser and returns results. Documented operations include navigation and waiting, page interaction, text, attribute and structured-data extraction, screenshots and PDFs, and session handoff. Browserless’s BAP TypeScript and Python SDKs build the same mutations under the hood; its documentation recommends the SDK for those languages. Direct BQL is useful from other languages, for generated calls, or in the hosted IDE. Browserless BrowserQL overview.
Browserless documents three HTTP endpoints: /chromium/bql for open-source Chromium, /chrome/bql for a genuine Google Chrome build, and /stealth/bql for a privacy-hardened browser configuration. Requests require an API token passed as a ?token= query parameter. Select the endpoint that fits your account and use case from the current Browserless documentation rather than assuming one route is universally best. Endpoint and request documentation.

Run a basic BrowserQL extraction
Start with one authorized product or collection page. The minimal pattern is navigation followed by extraction; replace the example URL with a page you are allowed to access.
mutation ScrapePage {
goto(url: "https://example.com", waitUntil: domContentLoaded) {
status
}
text {
text
}
}
Send the mutation to the BQL endpoint for your account, with your Browserless token in the query string. In an HTTP client, the request is a POST carrying the GraphQL mutation. Keep the token private; avoid placing it in public code, client-side pages, or logs. Use the Browserless hosted IDE or a supported SDK if you prefer not to construct requests directly. The documented Python and TypeScript BAP SDKs generate the same kind of mutations. BrowserQL documentation.
Wait for rendered content
domContentLoaded is a navigation milestone, not proof that a JavaScript-rendered product detail or price is present. If the relevant content appears later, use BrowserQL’s documented waitForSelector or waitForEvent operations to wait for the condition that matters, then extract. Choose a selector based on the actual authorized page; no store-specific selector is universal. BrowserQL waiting and extraction operations.

Extract only the fields you need
The basic example returns page text. For a narrower task, use BrowserQL’s documented extraction operations for attributes or structured data and target the relevant content. First inspect one page and establish that the returned values match the fields and purpose you intended. Do not assume that a selector from one Shopify theme will work on another.
Keep a page extraction distinct from a crawl
One product-page extraction is not a site-wide crawl. Begin with the smallest permitted scope. Expand to collection pages or additional URLs only if the use case requires them and your authorization covers that scope. Record which page and fields you collect so you can review selector changes and data handling later.
BrowserQL limits and operational considerations
Browserless’s documentation, accessed October 3, 2026, listed these maximum session durations. These are plan-specific product limits, not a guarantee that a particular extraction will complete within the limit; check the current account and documentation before implementation. Do not treat browser automation as a stable data interface: page structure and selectors can change with a store’s theme. Storefront API versions and schemas also need maintenance, so note the API version in your implementation. The BrowserQL and Shopify limits above describe different systems; they are not comparative performance results.

- BrowserQL rejects the request: Verify that the endpoint matches your intended browser configuration and account, that the request contains a valid mutation, and that the token is passed as
?token=. Check the current Browserless request documentation for endpoint and authentication details. BrowserQL request documentation. - Navigation returns but the desired text is missing: The page may render the content after
domContentLoaded. Wait for a selector or event associated with that content, then extract. Confirm the selector against the specific page rather than assuming a theme-wide selector. - A selector works on one store page but not another: Shopify storefronts can use different themes and structures. Inspect the authorized target page, identify the right element there, and handle pages with different structures explicitly.
- A session ends before the task finishes: Compare the task duration with the maximum session duration for your plan and check the current limit. Reduce unnecessary browser work or use an approach better suited to the required fields, such as the authorized Storefront API.
- Storefront API requests are rejected or limited: Check that you specify a supported API version, use an appropriate token where the requested feature requires one, and stay within query and automated-traffic limits. Shopify documents a 1,000 query complexity limit for tokenless requests in version 2026-04 and Web Bot Auth guidance for higher crawler limits. Storefront API reference; Web Bot Auth guidance.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For a screenshot of a page you are authorized to access, this cURL example saves a WebP file:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients including Claude and Cursor. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does BrowserQL scrape every Shopify store the same way?
No. Store themes and page structures vary, so selectors and wait conditions must be checked against each authorized page.
Does using Browserless stealth or CAPTCHA features make a scrape authorized?
No. They are technical capabilities, not evidence of permission or rights to reuse the collected data.
