Use a Google Sheet to hold the changes you want to make, an Apps Script time-driven trigger to check which rows are due, and the YouTube Data API to update the playlist. This schedules playlist edits—not the start or stop of a YouTube Live broadcast. Apps Script triggers run on a schedule but are not exact-to-the-second timers.
Understand what you are scheduling
YouTube Live broadcasts and YouTube playlists are separate resources. The YouTube Live Streaming API manages broadcasts and their associated streams; the YouTube Data API’s playlistItems methods add or update playlist entries. A job that changes playlist membership or order does not, by itself, schedule or control a live broadcast. Google’s Live Streaming API documentation describes the broadcast side; the playlist methods are documented in the YouTube Data API playlistItems reference.
Set up the Sheet and Apps Script
Create a schedule table
Make one row per planned change. A practical layout is:
| Column | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Due time | Date and time when the row may be processed. Choose a consistent time zone for the spreadsheet and script. |
| Action | INSERT to add a video or MOVE to reposition an existing playlist item. |
| Playlist ID | The target playlist’s ID. |
| Video ID | The YouTube video’s ID. |
| Playlist-item ID | Required for a move; this is the ID of the existing playlist entry, not the video ID. |
| Position | Optional zero-based position for a move, where 0 is the first position. |
| Status | Start with pending; write completed only after the API call succeeds, or error if it fails. |
| Last run and error | Record the attempted time and useful API error details for troubleshooting. |
This is a recommended control-table design, not a Google-provided template. Keep identifiers in separate columns and validate required cells before making a request.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Enable the YouTube service and authorize the script
- Open the Google Sheet and choose Extensions > Apps Script to create its script project. Google’s Sheets quickstart documents this starting point.
- In the Apps Script editor, add the YouTube advanced service. Follow Google’s YouTube advanced service guide and enable the corresponding YouTube Data API if the project setup asks for it.
- Run a setup or test function from the editor and approve the requested access. Use an account authorized to manage the channel and playlist; the YouTube API methods require OAuth authorization with an allowed YouTube scope.
- Create a processor function that reads pending rows, checks whether each due time has passed, validates the action and identifiers, makes the appropriate API call, then writes the result and attempted time back to the row.
Choose the correct API operation
Add a video to a playlist
Call YouTube.PlaylistItems.insert through the advanced service with the snippet part. The request needs snippet.playlistId and snippet.resourceId; the latter identifies a video, typically with kind: "youtube#video" and its video ID. A successful response means the video was added. Google lists the quota cost as 50 units per insert call in the insert method reference.
Move an existing video
First obtain the playlist-item resource ID for the existing entry. Then call YouTube.PlaylistItems.update with the item ID, playlist ID, video resource ID and desired position. Positions are zero-based, and the playlist must use Manual ordering for a position change. Google demonstrates the position convention in its update method reference and playlists reference.

Be deliberate about the update request’s part and body: mutable fields included in the requested parts can be replaced, and omitted mutable values in those parts can be cleared. Preserve the values you need by including them in the update body. Do not use contentDetails.startAt or contentDetails.endAt to schedule when a playlist item plays; the playlist-item reference marks these fields deprecated and says supplied values are ignored.
Schedule and run the processor
- In Apps Script, add an installable time-driven trigger for the processor function. Configure it to check the Sheet at an interval suitable for your workflow.
- Have the processor select only rows whose status is
pendingand whose due time has passed. Re-check status immediately before processing so a later trigger run does not blindly repeat a completed insertion. - For each row, validate its action, playlist ID, video ID, and—when moving—item ID and position. Skip invalid rows with an explanatory error rather than sending malformed requests.
- On success, mark the row completed and record the time. On failure, retain enough response detail to diagnose it and leave the row in an intentional retry or error state.
- Review Apps Script execution records and failure notifications after setup and periodically thereafter.
Google says installable time-driven triggers can run as frequently as every minute and as infrequently as once per month, depending on configuration. They are not guaranteed to fire at the exact scheduled minute: Google’s example notes that a recurring 9 a.m. trigger may run at some point between 9 and 10 a.m., then keep a consistent time within that window. The trigger runs as the account that created it, so that account’s continuing authorization and access matter. See Apps Script installable triggers for trigger behavior and setup details.

Make scheduled edits safer and easier to recover
- Avoid duplicate triggers. Before creating a trigger, check for and remove an existing trigger for the same handler if your setup would otherwise create another. Google’s trigger guidance includes this pattern.
- Design for retries. A time-driven processor may run again after an error or interruption. Row status and a success check help reduce duplicate work, but this design should not be treated as a guarantee of exactly-once execution.
- Keep errors visible. Distinguish missing IDs, inaccessible items, unsupported operations and a playlist that is not set to Manual ordering. Correct the row or permissions before retrying.
- Watch quota use. Each insert costs 50 quota units; avoid unnecessary repeated writes. The cited method reference does not establish the daily quota allocation for your particular project.
- Protect the trigger owner’s access. If the account that created the trigger loses channel access or authorization, scheduled writes may fail. Review that account’s permissions and Apps Script executions when a row remains pending or errors unexpectedly.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the broader goal is keeping uploaded videos live on a YouTube channel 24/7, StreamNeo is a separate option from this Sheets-based playlist scheduler. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection staying on. It supports uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the Monthly price is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, or start the free day.
