To schedule posts on X with Buffer, connect your X account, select it in Buffer’s post composer, write and preview your post, then add it to your queue or choose a specific publishing time. Buffer also offers options to share immediately or save a draft. The workflow and limits below reflect Buffer’s documentation; availability and X platform behavior can change.
Connect your X account to Buffer
- Sign in to Buffer and connect the X profile you want to use, following the account-connection prompts in Buffer.
- Open Create Post and select your X profile in the composer. Buffer’s X workflow supports selecting only one X account at a time for a scheduled post, according to its X publishing help.
Buffer’s X product page describes the workflow as selecting a profile, composing content, previewing it, and then choosing a publishing action.
Compose and preview the post
Write your text in the composer and add media or other supported post elements as needed. Buffer lists text-only posts, threads, single-image posts, posts with up to four images, GIFs, video, reposts, quote posts, and link previews among the X formats it supports. These are Buffer-documented capabilities, not a guarantee that every format will be available for every account or remain unchanged as X and Buffer update their services.
Check the preview before scheduling. For a post where the link preview matters, Buffer advises keeping the URL within the first 280 characters: its general scheduling guidance says X link previews are not currently available for posts over 280 characters because of API limitations. See Buffer’s scheduling guide.

Choose a queue slot or a custom time
| Option | What it does | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Add to Queue | Adds the post to the next available slot in the X channel’s configured posting schedule. | Maintaining a regular cadence without choosing a time for each post. |
| Prioritize | Moves the item ahead of other queued posts, according to Buffer’s scheduling guide. | Giving a post greater priority within your queue. |
| Schedule Post | Lets you select a specific date and time. | Coordinating content with a launch, event, or other planned moment. |
| Share Now | Publishes the post immediately. | When the content should go out now rather than later. |
| Save as Draft | Saves the post without scheduling it to publish. | Keeping unfinished or unapproved content for later. |
For a custom time, Buffer may show suggested posting times for the selected date, based on audience engagement patterns. Treat these as personalized guidance, not a promise of reach or a universally best time. Buffer’s queue, priority, custom-time, and publish-now options are described in its general scheduling guide.
Schedule a thread
Buffer documents thread scheduling, but creating a thread is available on Buffer’s web app rather than its mobile app. Threads created on the web can be rescheduled or deleted from mobile, according to the X publishing help.

| X account tier | Character limit listed by Buffer |
|---|---|
| Free | 280 |
| Basic, Premium, and Premium+ | 25,000 |
These are the limits in Buffer’s character-limit documentation, checked for this article on October 9, 2026. Buffer counts many characters as UTF-16 code units; an emoji or styled Unicode character can count as two units despite appearing as one symbol. Check the composer’s validation rather than estimating from visible characters alone. Account-tier limits and API behavior can change.
Buffer queue capacity
Buffer’s current help material lists a queue capacity of 10 scheduled posts per channel on Free and 5,000 per channel on Essentials and Team. These are queue caps, not daily or monthly publishing totals. How far ahead the queue reaches depends on the channel’s posting frequency. See Buffer’s queue-capacity help.

Troubleshoot common scheduling problems
- The post will not fit: Check the limit for the connected X account tier and Buffer’s composer counter; UTF-16 counting can differ from a visual character count.
- The queue is full: Publish or remove queued items, or choose a custom time if available. The documented queue cap is per channel and plan.
- You need to schedule several X accounts: Buffer’s X help says only one X account can be selected at a time when scheduling. Create and schedule a post for each profile separately.
- A duplicate post is rejected: Buffer’s X help says X does not allow duplicate posts. Edit the content before attempting to publish the same text again.
- You cannot create a thread on mobile: Create it on Buffer web; mobile can reschedule or delete threads that were created there.
- A link preview does not appear: Keep the URL within the first 280 characters if the preview matters, as Buffer’s scheduling guide recommends for X posts.
