Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Use an external scheduler to start a screenshot job, Selenium Grid to assign its remote browser sessions, and WebDriver to capture and save each image. Grid manages browser sessions; it does not provide a calendar or cron schedule, nor does it automatically archive screenshots.
How scheduled screenshots work with Selenium Grid
A scheduled capture has three separate parts:
- Scheduler: a CI schedule or operating-system job scheduler starts your process at the cadence you choose.
- Selenium Grid: routes each new remote browser session to a Node that matches the requested capabilities.
- Your test or script: opens the target page, waits for an appropriate readiness condition, captures a screenshot, and saves it to storage managed by your runner or CI system.
Grid’s New Session Queue holds requests until the Distributor can assign them to a suitable Node. The Router sends new sessions into that flow and forwards commands for existing sessions to the Node that owns each session. If matching browser slots are busy, a job can wait.
Choose a Grid deployment
| Topology | When it fits |
|---|---|
| Standalone | Local development or a small, single-machine setup. |
| Hub/Node | A shared entry point needs to route sessions to machines with different browser or platform coverage. |
| Distributed | Grid components need separate deployments. |
Start Grid and check that it is reachable through its UI or the /status endpoint. The documented default entry point for Router, Hub, and Standalone is port 4444; confirm the actual URL and network route for your deployment. See the Selenium Grid documentation for topology and setup details.
Build a scheduled screenshot job in Python
This example uses Selenium’s Python binding and a remote Grid. It requests a Chrome session, navigates to a page, waits for the document body, saves a viewport screenshot, and always attempts to release the session. Install Selenium in the environment that runs the job and set GRID_URL and TARGET_URL for your deployment.

For repeatable comparisons, keep the viewport and browser configuration consistent. Add the browser version, platform, device scale settings, and any other relevant capabilities your Grid supports. A fixed window size controls the requested browser window; verify the resulting viewport in your environment if exact pixel dimensions matter.
Wait for the page you actually need
document.readyState reaching complete does not prove that asynchronous content, web fonts, or lazy-loaded images have settled. Add a condition tied to the page, such as waiting for a known selector or a specific application state. Avoid relying on an arbitrary delay as the sole readiness check where the page exposes a better signal.

Save artifacts outside the Grid session
The screenshot API returns an image through the WebDriver session; your script or test runner should write it to an artifact directory and configure the CI system or storage service to retain and retrieve it. Grid manages remote sessions, not screenshot-file archival. Log the target URL, requested capabilities, session ID, capture result, and artifact location to make delayed or failed runs easier to diagnose.
Schedule and scale the job
Configure the cadence in the system that launches the script, not in Grid. For example, define a scheduled workflow in your CI platform or use the operating system’s job scheduler to invoke the same process. The exact schedule syntax and artifact-retention settings depend on that platform.

Choose capacity based on the browser and operating-system matrix, peak simultaneous jobs, available machines, and machine power. Selenium gives approximately 1 GB of RAM per browser session as an engineering sizing reference, not a guaranteed requirement; actual use varies by workload. Measure session creation time, queue delay, capture duration, memory, and failure rate with your pages and browser matrix before setting worker counts. Grid’s browser slots and machine resources limit useful concurrency, and excess requests may wait in the queue. See Selenium’s Grid sizing guidance.
- Use a single host for modest workloads that fit its resources and browser coverage.
- Use multiple Nodes when you need additional browser/platform coverage or parallel capacity.
- Use a distributed deployment when Grid components need separate placement or scaling.
- Set runner concurrency to match available matching slots, and watch queue delay as well as total job duration.
- Plan artifact retention and retrieval in the runner or CI system independently of Grid.
Security and operational checks
Protect the Grid endpoint with network controls. Selenium warns that external access can expose Grid infrastructure, internal web applications and files, and permit third parties to run custom binaries. Its documentation states: “Selenium Grid must be protected from external access using appropriate firewall permissions.” Do not expose an unprotected Grid to arbitrary public clients. See Selenium’s Grid security guidance.

- Confirm the runner can reach the configured Grid URL and that the status endpoint responds.
- Request capabilities that match the browsers and platforms registered on your Nodes.
- Use cleanup logic such as
driver.quit()so failed navigation or capture does not leave a session occupying a slot. - Record enough job details to connect a saved image or failure to its target, session, and run.
Screenshot scope and consistency
The WebDriver examples demonstrate capturing the current browser screenshot and saving it, as well as capturing an element. The Python example above saves the current screenshot; adapt it to the element screenshot method in your binding if you need a specific element. Do not assume that a WebDriver screenshot is a full-document capture: full-page behavior is not established as a cross-browser, cross-language guarantee. Verify the selected browser and binding if full-page output is a requirement.
For visual comparisons, keep browser version, viewport, device scale settings, and page state consistent. Decide whether the job should capture a whole viewport or a particular element, and define readiness based on the content being compared.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Connection refused or the Grid URL cannot be reached | Grid is stopped, the URL or port is wrong, or the runner has no network route to it. | Check Grid status in the UI or at /status, then verify the deployed hostname, port, and network access from the job runner. |
| New session waits or fails to start | No available Node slot matches the requested capabilities, or matching slots are busy. | Compare requested browser, version, and platform capabilities with registered Nodes; check slots, resource headroom, and queue delay. |
| Screenshot is blank or misses content | The page was not ready for the capture, or important content loads asynchronously. | Wait for a page-specific selector or state and confirm that the needed images, fonts, and content have loaded. |
| Later runs cannot find the screenshot | The file was saved only in the job’s local workspace or was not retained by the runner. | Check the output path and configure artifact upload, retention, and retrieval in the CI or storage system. |
| Sessions consume slots after a failed run | The script exited before closing the remote session. | Put driver.quit() in a finally cleanup path and inspect Grid status for active sessions. |
| Grid is reachable from unintended clients | The endpoint is exposed without adequate access controls. | Restrict network access with appropriate firewall and deployment controls; do not leave an unprotected Grid publicly reachable. |

If you need scheduled website images without operating Selenium Grid, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API. A single request can capture a URL; you can run that request from the scheduler or runner you already use. It is also an MCP server with screenshot tools for AI agents.
For a basic request, replace the URL and API key with your own values. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. The MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.
When Selenium IDE’s runner is relevant
Selenium IDE’s command-line runner documentation describes running suites in parallel, setting a worker count, and passing a Grid server URL. That page includes legacy Node prerequisites, so confirm requirements against the runner release you use rather than assuming those instructions apply to current versions. For code-based jobs, an existing test framework or CI runner can handle scheduling and artifact collection while Grid supplies remote browser sessions.
