Choose how the screenshot worker will run
Google’s Cloud Run browser automation guidance identifies webpage screenshots as a headless Chrome use case and lists Puppeteer and Playwright as browser automation options. Cloud Scheduler can trigger an HTTP service directly, a Cloud Run job, or a Pub/Sub target that leads to an event-driven function.

Choose based on deployment packaging, whether the worker should receive a direct request or message, its runtime and worker needs, and the operational complexity you can support. No general performance winner can be named without workload measurements.
Build the capture and output flow
Open and capture the page
In the function or job, launch headless Chrome through Puppeteer or Playwright, navigate to the target URL, and capture the rendered page. Decide what “ready” means for your site: a navigation event alone may not mean that client-rendered content or images have finished loading. Set appropriate navigation and execution timeouts, and handle navigation failures rather than treating every run as a successful image.

Store or deliver the screenshot
After capture, send the image to a durable destination or downstream consumer chosen for your application. The scheduling and browser guidance does not prescribe a storage design for screenshots. Select one based on retention, access control, downstream use, and cost; do not leave the only copy in a short-lived worker filesystem if it must be available later.
Make repeated execution safe
Design the worker to tolerate a repeated invocation. Scheduler delivery or recovery can cause another run, and Google notes that jobs that failed while the Cloud Scheduler API was disabled can run immediately after the API is re-enabled. If duplicates have a cost, use an idempotency key or deterministic output naming scheme based on the target and scheduled capture time, and decide explicitly whether a repeated run replaces or preserves the prior image.

Set a recurring schedule and secure it
- Deploy the HTTP Cloud Run function or Cloud Run job that performs the capture. Keep the target private where possible.
- Create a Cloud Scheduler job with the appropriate target type: HTTP for a directly invoked function or service, or the documented job trigger for a Cloud Run job. For a decoupled event-driven function, use Pub/Sub as the Scheduler target and configure the function to receive that event.
- Enter a five-field Unix-cron-style schedule and select the timezone deliberately. For example, Google’s cron tutorial uses
30 16 * * 7for 16:30 every Sunday in the selected timezone. The expression does not itself specify the timezone. - For an authenticated HTTP target, configure an OIDC token for a service account that has permission to invoke the deployed target. Make sure the OIDC audience matches the deployed function or service URL; do not make the endpoint public just to simplify scheduling.
- Run the job once manually during setup. Check the Scheduler execution status and Cloud Run logs, and confirm that the output reached its intended destination.
Google Cloud Documentation describes the recurring pattern this way: “You can use Cloud Scheduler to securely trigger a Cloud Run service on a schedule.”
Monitor runs, errors, and cost
Log enough to identify the target, capture outcome, and output destination, but do not log credentials or sensitive page contents. Monitor Scheduler execution status alongside Cloud Run logs so you can distinguish a trigger failure from a browser navigation, rendering, or storage failure.

Google’s scheduled HTTP function tutorial identifies Cloud Run and Cloud Scheduler as billable components. Cloud Run jobs also have applicable costs. An estimate depends on capture frequency, browser runtime, memory, region, storage and retention, retries, and current pricing. Use Google Cloud’s pricing calculator with the intended design and check current pricing; a sample cron expression is not a workload estimate.
For a one-time task rather than a recurring schedule, Google points to Cloud Tasks, which can schedule a task up to 30 days ahead. Cloud Scheduler supports HTTP endpoints, Pub/Sub topics, and App Engine services as targets; select the target that matches the worker architecture.

Troubleshoot common failures
