The function runs a compatible headless browser, captures the target page, and saves the image to durable storage such as Amazon S3. Plan for browser packaging, asynchronous delivery, retries, and occasional duplicate or slightly late invocations; a scheduled run alone does not prove that a screenshot was successfully stored.
How the scheduled screenshot flow works
EventBridge Scheduler sends an invocation to Lambda. Lambda starts a browser, navigates to the page, waits for the condition you choose, takes the screenshot, and uploads the result. Use Lambda’s temporary /tmp directory only for browser files and intermediate output; it is not durable storage.
- Create an EventBridge Scheduler schedule with the Lambda function as its target.
- Give Scheduler’s execution role permission to invoke that function.
- Package a browser and compatible dependencies with the function, then capture the page.
- Upload the image to S3 or another durable destination and log successful completion.
- Configure retries, a dead-letter queue where appropriate, and monitoring.
AWS’s older website screenshot sample illustrates periodic capture and S3 storage, but it specifies Node.js 12.x. Treat it as an architectural example, not current runtime setup instructions.
Choose a schedule and understand its timing
Rate, cron, or one-time schedule
Use a rate expression for intervals such as every 15 minutes, a cron expression for calendar-based recurring runs, or a one-time schedule for a future capture. Scheduler supports time zones and daylight-saving adjustments. Cron schedules faster than once per minute are not supported.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Invocations are not guaranteed to begin at the exact second you specify. AWS documents scheduled invocations occurring at differing seconds within the scheduled minute; for example, an hourly schedule may run at 2:00:45, 3:00:32, and 4:00:18. A flexible time window can widen that window further. Do not use this design for deadlines that require exact-second execution.
Configure in the Lambda console
- Open the function in the Lambda console and choose Add trigger.
- Select Scheduler, then provide a schedule name and group.
- Choose one-time or recurring, set the expression and time zone as needed, and optionally supply JSON input for values such as a target URL or output prefix.
- Configure the Scheduler execution role. The console can create one; a manually managed deployment must provide a role with permission to invoke the target function.
- Set retry and failure handling options, then create the trigger.
Scheduler invokes Lambda asynchronously. Keep its execution role separate from the Lambda execution role: the former needs lambda:InvokeFunction for the target; the latter needs only the function’s runtime permissions, such as write access to the destination bucket.
Infrastructure and scale considerations
For CLI, SDK, CloudFormation, SAM, or CDK deployments, define the schedule target and its execution role explicitly. AWS’s default quota is 10,000,000 schedules per Region and is adjustable. The default invocation throttle is 1,000 invocations per second in primary Regions; other Regions can differ, and quotas are adjustable. Confirm the applicable quota for your Region and workload in the Scheduler quotas documentation.

Package and run the browser in Lambda
Your handler needs to launch a browser executable that is compatible with the chosen Lambda runtime and architecture, navigate to the requested page, wait for a meaningful readiness condition, capture the image, upload it, and close browser resources before returning. AWS documents Lambda’s platform limits but does not endorse a particular current Puppeteer or Chromium bundle. Validate the exact browser, library, architecture, and runtime combination in the deployed environment before relying on it.

Set practical timeouts and storage
- Standard Lambda function timeout is configurable up to 900 seconds (15 minutes). Browser startup, page load, and upload all consume this budget.
- Lambda container images may be up to 10 GB uncompressed. This can accommodate large browser dependencies, but does not guarantee a particular image’s compatibility or performance.
- Configurable
/tmpstorage ranges from 512 MB to 10,240 MB. Increase it if browser caches or temporary files require more room, and still upload the finished screenshot to durable storage.
These are service limits, not a promise that a particular site will load or capture within them. Set navigation and capture timeouts below the function’s overall timeout so the handler has time to clean up and report failure. Avoid logging page contents or credentials; log the target identifier, outcome, and storage key instead.
ZIP with layer or container image
A ZIP-and-layer deployment and a container image are both possible packaging approaches. Choose based on browser dependency size, compatibility with your runtime, build and update workflow, and the artifact limits. The available AWS guidance does not establish one approach as universally better for browser screenshots. Whichever you choose, test cold starts and browser launches in the target Lambda runtime rather than assuming local development results transfer.

Capture and store screenshots safely
Use a predictable S3 key scheme that makes the site and capture time apparent, such as a site identifier followed by a UTC timestamp. Decide whether you need only the latest image or a historical series, then set access controls, encryption, and lifecycle retention to match. Repeated captures can accumulate storage unless you define retention deliberately; the AWS sample demonstrates S3 as a destination but does not prescribe bucket policies or retention rules.
Do not treat a file in /tmp as the final result. Upload the completed image, and log the upload result and object key. If downstream users rely on a new image being present, use the object or an explicit completion record as a success signal.
Make retries and duplicate delivery safe
EventBridge Scheduler provides at-least-once delivery, so duplicate invocations are possible. Choose whether that is acceptable. If duplicates must not create confusing records or trigger downstream work twice, use a deterministic key for the scheduled capture or another deduplication mechanism. If historical captures are expected, include a schedule/run identifier as well as the capture time in the key.

Configure retry limits and event retention deliberately, and add a dead-letter queue (DLQ) when missed captures need investigation or replay. For universal targets, AWS warns that Scheduler validates the target ARN format but not the downstream API input. Validate inputs yourself and test with a one-time schedule before enabling a recurring workload.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Monitor delivery and actual capture completion
Use Lambda CloudWatch logs to inspect browser, navigation, and upload outcomes. Scheduler metrics can help identify delivery problems, including InvocationAttemptCount, TargetErrorCount, TargetErrorThrottledCount, and InvocationDroppedCount. AWS describes Scheduler metrics as best effort, so pair them with application logs and an S3 object or other completion signal when a missing screenshot matters. A schedule firing—or a Scheduler metric—does not by itself show that a valid screenshot was saved.
Estimate the cost for your workload
There is no useful fixed total without the workload and Region. Estimate Scheduler usage alongside Lambda duration and memory, browser startup and network behavior, S3 storage and retention, and logging. The AWS sample warns that charges may apply after Free Tier usage; check current AWS pricing for the services and Region you select rather than applying a price from an older sample.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can EventBridge Scheduler run a screenshot capture more often than once per minute?
No. AWS says cron schedules faster than once per minute are unsupported.
Does Lambda guarantee the screenshot will be saved just because the schedule ran?
No. Check the function’s capture and upload completion signals; scheduled delivery alone is not proof of a valid stored image.
