To keep a screenshot scheduled for the same local time after a daylight saving time (DST) change, schedule it as a recurring local wall-clock time in a named time zone, such as America/New_York. Do not repeatedly add 24 hours or reuse a fixed UTC offset. Also decide what should happen if the chosen time is skipped when clocks move forward or occurs twice when clocks move back.

Choose what “same time” means

There are two different schedules that can sound like “every day”:

  • Local wall-clock schedule: capture every day at 09:00 in a particular region. The corresponding UTC time changes when that region changes its offset.
  • Elapsed-time schedule: capture every 24 hours. The local display time can shift when the region changes its offset.

For a business-hours check or a daily report expected at the same local hour, use a wall-clock schedule. For a task that genuinely needs a fixed elapsed interval, use an interval schedule and accept that its local clock time can change.

Store a named time zone, not just an offset

Save the local recurrence and an IANA time-zone identifier together—for example, 09:00 daily and America/New_York. An offset such as UTC−05:00 describes the difference from UTC at a particular instant; it does not encode the region’s future rules. Regional offsets can change with DST and government decisions. As MDN explains, determining an offset requires both the time zone and the instant: MDN: Temporal.ZonedDateTime.

When calculating each run, resolve the local calendar date and time against the named zone’s rules. Avoid deriving tomorrow’s occurrence simply by adding 24 elapsed hours to today’s UTC timestamp: that preserves the interval, not necessarily the intended local clock time.

Define behavior for skipped and repeated times

At a spring-forward transition, a range of local times does not exist. At a fall-back transition, a range of local times occurs twice. A schedule set inside either range needs an explicit policy.

Transition What happens Policy to choose
Clock moves forward A scheduled local time in the skipped interval has no matching instant. Skip that run, move it to the next valid time, or apply another documented rule.
Clock moves back A scheduled local time in the repeated interval matches two instants. Run once at the first occurrence, run once at the second, or deliberately run twice.

Record the policy with the schedule so operators know whether a missing capture is expected and whether a repeated hour can produce duplicate captures. Do not assume a scheduler’s default matches your intended behavior.

Implement recurring times with explicit-zone date logic

Temporal in JavaScript

Temporal.ZonedDateTime models a date and time in a named zone. Its calendar-day arithmetic follows that zone’s offset rules, unlike adding elapsed hours. MDN documents that ZonedDateTime.add() adjusts for DST; its default “compatible” disambiguation moves a nonexistent time later by the gap and selects the earlier instant for a repeated time. That is an API default, not necessarily the right policy for your application: MDN: Temporal.ZonedDateTime.prototype.add().

For example, MDN’s New York example shows 2024-11-03 01:00 at UTC−04:00 plus one calendar day becoming 2024-11-04 01:00 at UTC−05:00. Adding an hour instead advances elapsed time and can land within the repeated hour. Choose calendar units for calendar recurrences, and verify that the Temporal implementation is supported by the specific browser or server runtime you deploy; it is not available in all widely used browsers.

Do not let the host zone choose for you

JavaScript Date local getters and setters, construction from local date fields, and getTimezoneOffset() use the host runtime’s local zone. A server may run in UTC even when the schedule is for New York. Legacy Date construction also resolves ambiguity compatibly: it chooses the earlier occurrence for a repeated local time and moves forward across a gap for a nonexistent one. That can silently determine capture timing if local dates are constructed without an explicit zone. See MDN: Date.

Do not treat a local date-time input as a zone

An HTML datetime-local input supplies local date and time fields, but it does not include a time zone. A user can enter a time that does not exist in the intended zone on a spring-forward date. Pair the input with an explicit zone selection and validate the resulting local date-time against the chosen zone before accepting or scheduling it. See MDN: <input type=”datetime-local”>.

Test the schedule where it will run

  1. Configure a staging recurrence with the intended local time and named IANA zone.
  2. Choose a date when that zone has a forward transition and test a local time in the skipped interval.
  3. Choose a date when that zone has a backward transition and test a time in the repeated interval.
  4. Inspect the scheduler’s resolved UTC instant, its local-time display, and the actual number of capture attempts for each case.
  5. Repeat these checks after relevant scheduler, runtime, or time-zone-data updates if exact timing matters.

For New York, MDN’s transition examples show the local clock moving from 01:59 to 03:00 on 2024-03-10, and the 01:00 hour repeating on 2024-11-03: MDN: Temporal.ZonedDateTime. These dates illustrate the gap and overlap; they are not a guarantee that other zones change on the same dates or at the same local time.

Check your scheduler’s guarantees

Time-zone-aware date arithmetic does not, by itself, establish what a particular cron service, cloud scheduler, or screenshot provider will do. Before relying on one, check its current documentation for:

  • Support for named IANA zones rather than only UTC or fixed offsets.
  • Its rule for nonexistent and repeated local times.
  • Retry behavior after a failed capture and whether retries can create duplicate results.
  • How it handles time-zone database updates and schedule changes.

Test the selected provider’s actual behavior instead of assuming that a familiar cron expression or local-time setting guarantees the desired transition policy.

Troubleshoot timing that changes or duplicates

The capture shifts by an hour after DST

Check whether the schedule is based on a fixed UTC offset or an elapsed interval rather than a named-zone local recurrence. Store the intended IANA zone and calculate each local occurrence from that zone’s rules.

A capture occurs at the wrong local time on a server

Check the runtime’s host zone. Local JavaScript date methods may be using the server’s zone, often different from the schedule’s target zone. Use explicit-zone date logic and verify the resolved instant.

A spring-forward capture is missing or late

Determine whether the configured local time fell in the skipped interval. Check the scheduler’s gap policy; it may skip the run or move it forward. Select and document the behavior your workflow requires.

A fall-back capture runs twice

Check whether the scheduler treats both matching instants as separate occurrences, or whether a retry produced another attempt. Choose a first-or-second-occurrence policy if only one run is wanted, and inspect retry and duplicate-run semantics separately.

A browser accepts a time that the schedule cannot resolve

A datetime-local field does not know the selected zone and can accept a nonexistent local time. Validate the entered fields using the explicit zone and apply the product’s gap policy before saving.
