You can schedule a live event on each YouTube channel, but scheduling alone does not turn either channel’s playlist into a continuous livestream. Each event needs its own encoder or cloud playout job, configured with that channel’s stream URL and key. YouTube documents failover between encoders; it does not establish automatic takeover from one YouTube channel by another.
What scheduling does—and what it does not do
A scheduled livestream is an upcoming live event created in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Viewers can find it in the channel’s subscriber feed and choose a “Notify me” reminder. The event page is not itself a video feed: an encoder or playout service must send video to it.
YouTube’s documented encoder workflow does not describe a native scheduler that takes videos from an ordinary YouTube playlist and plays them as a continuous 24/7 livestream. In this setup, treat “playlist” as the ordered queue in your encoder or playout service, unless that service specifically supports another kind of playlist input.
A scheduled video is different: it is an uploaded private video set to publish at a chosen date, time, and time zone. It does not create a continuous live feed. See YouTube’s scheduled video publishing instructions.

Set up separate scheduled events and feeds
- Prepare both channels. Confirm that live streaming is enabled on each account. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the planned start. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Schedule the primary event. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live → Manage → Schedule Stream. Reuse an existing stream’s settings or create a new one, then set the event details and schedule.
- Schedule the backup-channel event separately. Switch to the other channel and repeat the scheduling process there. Confirm that the event belongs to the intended channel. Reused settings can include a stream key, so do not assume a copied configuration contains the correct key for the channel you are setting up. Review YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
- Configure two independent playout jobs. Give the primary job its intended video queue and the primary channel’s stream URL and key. Give the backup job its own queue and the backup channel’s stream URL and key. YouTube requires the stream URL and key to be entered in the encoder; creating an event does not supply its feed.
- Check each event before relying on it. Preview each feed in Live Control Room before starting. Check the event’s visibility and scheduled time, confirm audio and video are present, and open each watch page to verify viewers can reach the intended event.
Treat stream keys as credentials: store them securely, use the key that matches the channel and event, and avoid sharing them with people who do not need access.
Choose how to run the two queues continuously
The key requirement is not simply scheduling; it is keeping two appropriate playout jobs available and correctly routed. Compare options on continuous operation, independent queues and channel outputs, prerecorded-media scheduling, failover, local recording, quality and network requirements, setup effort, and ongoing cost. YouTube’s encoder directory lists software and hardware options, but it does not provide comparative prices or reliability benchmarks.

YouTube’s verified-encoder directory describes AJA HELO Plus as a standalone H.264 encoder with dual-stream outputs and a PlayToStream feature for scheduling prerecorded media to YouTube Live. It also lists Gyre as a cloud tool for 24/7 prerecorded-video streams. These are examples to investigate, not endorsements; confirm current functionality and whether the specific two-channel workflow you need is supported. YouTube also recognizes software-encoder workflows.
Test encoder failover and the backup channel separately
A backup encoder and a backup channel solve different problems. YouTube provides guidance for testing a switch from a primary encoder to a backup encoder. That is not evidence that a second channel automatically takes over when the first channel’s feed fails.

- Start the primary feed and confirm it appears correctly in Live Control Room.
- For an encoder-failover test, stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet cable, then verify that the player rolls over to the backup encoder. This is YouTube’s recommended failover test in its streaming tips.
- Separately test the backup channel’s scheduled event: start its own playout job, confirm the correct feed reaches the event, and check that its watch page is reachable with the intended visibility.
- Document who can start or monitor each job and how you will direct viewers to the backup channel if the primary channel is unavailable.
Do not treat an encoder failover test as proof of cross-channel failover. The backup channel needs its own event, feed, and viewer-facing plan.
Plan for recordings and long-running streams
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a 24/7 operation, keep an independent local recording or another archive plan rather than relying on YouTube to preserve the full stream. See YouTube’s live stream archive guidance.

Common setup problems
- The scheduled page exists, but no video appears: Scheduling creates the event, not its feed. Start the relevant encoder or playout job and check that it is sending to the event’s stream URL and key.
- The feed goes to the wrong channel: A reused stream configuration may carry the wrong key. Check the channel selected in Studio and match each job’s URL and key to that channel’s event.
- The backup channel does not take over: A second channel is not the same as a backup encoder. Start and test the backup channel’s event and feed independently; do not expect automatic cross-channel takeover.
- The feed is missing from the preview: Check that the job is running, the event is the one you intend to use, and the connection and stream credentials are correct. Preview before going live.
- The archive is incomplete or absent: YouTube warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Keep an independent recording for a continuous stream.
