To schedule seasonal store promo videos as a YouTube Live loop, schedule the event in YouTube Studio, prepare OBS to repeat one local video or a playlist, then send OBS’s feed to YouTube and verify the preview before the event starts. YouTube Studio schedules the broadcast; OBS plays the promo content. The documented workflow does not automatically switch playlists when the season changes, so you must update the OBS media or playlist yourself.
Before you begin
- YouTube channel: It must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Encoder streaming is the option for a setup using software such as OBS. YouTube’s live-streaming requirements
- Promo media: Keep the video files on the computer running OBS. For a playlist, install VLC so the VLC Video source is available in OBS.
- Reliable upload: Your connection must support the stream’s total bitrate. YouTube recommends keeping 20% spare upload capacity; check the current encoder settings and streaming tips when choosing resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate.
- Rights and content: Use promotional video, music, images, and other material you have the right to broadcast. A live stream is still subject to YouTube’s copyright rules and channel policies.
Schedule the YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live → Manage → Schedule Stream. Choose to reuse settings or create a new stream.
- Enter the event details, including its title, description, visibility, and scheduled start time. Choose privacy and sharing settings appropriate for the store’s audience.
- Save the event. You can share its watch page in advance, and viewers may be able to set a reminder.
- Open the event in Live Control Room and locate the stream URL and stream key. You will enter both in OBS. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to broadcast to your channel. YouTube Help: schedule a live stream
Set up OBS to loop the seasonal promo
For one repeating promo video
- In OBS, select the scene you want to use, then add a Media Source.
- Choose the local video file. Commonly supported examples include MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM.
- Enable Loop in the Media Source properties and confirm the source. Play the scene to check that the video repeats cleanly.
For several seasonal spots
- Add a VLC Video source to the scene. If that source type is missing, install VLC and restart OBS.
- Build the playlist from the local promo files. Put them in the order you want if the spots should play in a fixed sequence; choose shuffle only if the order should vary.
- Enable Loop Playlist, then preview the scene to verify that the files play in the intended sequence and repeat.
- Check source visibility behavior. A VLC source may pause or stop when hidden, depending on its source settings; keep it visible during the broadcast and test any scene changes before the event.

Connect OBS to YouTube and test the feed
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select YouTube as the service, then enter the stream URL and stream key from the event’s Live Control Room. If your OBS version offers a direct account connection instead, follow its on-screen flow and confirm you are connecting the correct channel.
- In Settings → Output and Settings → Video, choose an encoder, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate appropriate to your computer and upload connection. YouTube recommends RTMPS and publishes current codec-specific bitrate ranges; use its live settings page rather than relying on a fixed number that may become outdated. Keep total streaming bitrate within available upload capacity, with the recommended 20% headroom.
- Use YouTube’s encoder setup guidance to confirm other stream settings, including keyframe interval, for the selected codec and quality. YouTube encoder settings and streaming tips
- Start the encoder in OBS early enough for YouTube to receive it. YouTube recommends setting up an encoder stream at least two hours in advance and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event.
- In Live Control Room, check the incoming preview before the event begins. Verify the correct seasonal video is visible, the image is stable, and the audio is intentional—muted if the promo should be silent, or at an appropriate level if it includes audio.
- When the event is ready, start the live broadcast using the controls shown in Live Control Room. Keep OBS running and monitor the video and audio while the event is live.
Switch the content when the season changes
The schedule and the playlist are separate operations: YouTube Studio schedules the live event, while OBS loops the local file or VLC playlist. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings control starting or stopping an encoder stream; they are not a calendar system for choosing a summer, holiday, or other seasonal playlist. Before each seasonal campaign, update the Media Source file or VLC playlist in OBS, then rehearse the change and confirm the right content in the YouTube preview.

Monitor and end the broadcast
- Watch the Live Control Room status and OBS output during the event. YouTube advises continuous monitoring of audio and video quality.
- If quality degrades, check whether the upload connection can sustain the configured total bitrate. Reduce the stream settings if needed, while staying within YouTube’s current recommendations for the selected codec.
- When the event is over, end the stream deliberately in YouTube. After the event has stopped on YouTube, stop the encoder in OBS. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
Troubleshooting
